<< STARTING THE SEASON RIGHT >>California Baptists opening weekend featured a lot of familiar faces, with three of the Lancers starters keeping their role from last season. Ane Olaeta, Lexy Ram, and Delacy Brown all helped the Lancers jump out to an early lead against Long Beach State, one that would last for the entire half.

Georgia Dale was promoted to the starting lineup after filling the role of sixth-man for the team last year. She is the Lancers utlity player, doing whatever is need as is evident in her stat line so far this season, averaging 11 points, six-and-a-half rebounds, and five assists per game.

Caitlyn Harper is making the biggest impact for CBU this season, though it comes as no surprise to her coaches. Harper started the season with a career-high 22 points on 8-15 shooting against Long Beach State, and followed it up with 14 pints and eight rebounds against CSUN. Cailtyn wasted no opportunities as she was also perfect from the free-throw line, going 10-for-10 from the stripe.

Sydney Palma and Tiena Afu are proving to be clutch players off the bench for the Lancers, averaging a combined 17.5 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists per game.

<< POSTSEASON AWARDS >>In addition to Britney Thomas being named the WAC Newcomer of the Year, CBU reaped its fair share of conference awards this season. Jarrod Olson was named the WAC Coach of the Year after guiding the Lancers to a runner-up finish in the conference after they entered last year ranked seventh in the preseason poll.

Thomas also made the WAC's first team and all-defense squad. Ane Olaeta notched second-team honors and Delacy Brown was an all-newcomer selection. Olaeta ranked second in the WAC with 5.1 assists per game, fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6), 11th with 11.3 points per game and 14th with 1.6 steals per game.

Brown was the third Lancer to average double-digit points last year, with 10.3 a game. She also put up 2.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.1 steals a game. She ranked in the top 50 of the WAC in all four major categories, including 15th in points, 20th in assists and 25th in steals.

<< PRESEASON AWARDS >>

In both the 2019 WAC Coaches and Media preseason polls, the Lancers were picked to repeat as WAC runners-up. NM State was picked to repeat as conference champs. Thomas, and point guard Ane Olaeta were voted to the preseason first team All-WAC list by the coaches.

Both the WAC coaches and media polls sloted the Lancers and repeat runners-up this season, falling just a few votes shy of the favorites and reigning champions, the Aggies from NM State.

<< OLSON AT A GLANCE >>This will mark the eighth season with Jarrod Olson will lead the Lancers. CBU has logged a 77.5 winning percentage (169-54) under Olson, who was named the WAC Coach of the Year in the teams inaguaral run. The honor added to a long list of acheivements by coach Olson as he also won in the PacWest in back-to-back seasons (2016-17) and the National Christian College Athletic Association in 2013. The Lancers have won three West Region titles, with two in the NCAA (2015, 2017) and to the Division II semifinals twice and to two national championship games, including the 2015 D-II finals. CBU has combined for 19 All-PacWest, 10 All-West Region (five NCAA) and five All-American awards (four NCAA) under Olson.

Olson is the 10th coach in the Lancer program’s 38-year history. He came to CBU after six seasons as the head coach at Division II Florida Southern after four years as an assistant at NCAA Division I Creighton. He also served on the coaching staffs at Saint Mary (Neb.), Emporia State and Bellevue. He spent his playing days at Doane College in Crete, Neb., where he was an NAIA All-American and inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in 2018.

For his career, he posted 2,018 points, which ranks sixth all-time at Doane, and is the all-time assist leader with 637. He also played briefly with the Queens Graduates basketball club in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

California Baptist University is among the nation’s largest private Christian colleges and universities located in Southern California, with a fall 2019 enrollment of 11,045 students. It ranked eighth among the fastest-growing colleges in the United States during a recent 10-year period in “Almanac 2018-19” published by the Chronicle of Higher Education and reflects the institution’s enrollment growth from 2006 through 2016.

In 2006, CBU enrollment totaled 3,409 students. A decade later, in 2016, enrollment at CBU was 9,157 students, an increase of 168.6 percent. The No. 8 ranking compared CBU with other private non-profit institutions classified as “Master’s Colleges & Universities” in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Among the 392 institutions in that classification, enrollment growth averaged 15.7 percent over the same 10-year period.

Back in September of 2019, it earned regional rankings from U.S. News and World Report as a “Best Value School,” “Most Innovative School” and ranked No. 43 in the “Best Regional University” for public and private colleges in the West. It was the sixth year in a row CBU earned a top-50 ranking as a “Best Regional University.” It has appeared in the Best Colleges list 14 times. CBU offers more than 150 majors, minors and concentrations as well as more than 40 graduate programs and four doctoral programs. CBU’s beautiful 160-acre main campus in Riverside, Calif., is situated in the heart of the historic Magnolia Avenue district just a short drive from popular beaches and mountain resorts. The Lancers are in year two of four reclassifications seasons to NCAA Division I after they completed a transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II in 2013-14. CBU is primarily a member of the Western Athletic Conference.

<< LEARFIELD CUP CHAMPIONS >>The Lancers left NCAA Division II in just about the best way possible, winning the 2017-18 NCAA Division II Learfield Directors’ Cup with 905 points last season. It essentially recognized CBU as the most well rounded and successful institution in all of Division II.

CBU steadily moved up the standings each season since joining the NCAA in 2013-14. CBU finished 26th in the Division II standings in 2014, moved up to 16th in 2015, fourth in 2016 and second in 2017 before winning it all in 2018.
