    This means the tourism activities are developed andoperated, for the most part, by local community members

    with local culture, heritage and traditions. Similarly,community-based tourism implies respect and concern forthe natural heritage, particularly where the environment isone of the attractions

    The concept of CBT is very new in Bangladesh.

    Very few organizations have been working on

    CBT for past few years.

    Among them, Nishorgo Program of Forest

    Department is the major role player in the field ofCommunity Based Tourism

    Nishorgo Program is a life long initiative of

    Bangladesh Forest Department forBiodiversity conservation at the protectedareas

    Under this initiative, Community based

    Tourism is a major tool for alternativeincome generation for the forest user

    groups.

    CBT Sites of BangladeshCBT Sites of BangladeshInitially CBT has been implementing at Five

    protected areas of Bangladesh.

    1. Lawachara National Park

    2. Satchari National Park

    3. Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary

    4. ChunotiWildlife Sanctuary and

    5. Teknaf Game Reserve

    Eventually the CBT will be implemented at all 20Protected Areas.

    Forest Department developed individual Eco-Tourism Micro Plan for five Pas

    These micro-plans are the comprehensive

    guidelines for developing and implementingcommunity based tourism at the PAs.

    Nishorgo encouraged some localentrepreneurs to build eco-cottages as anincome generating business out of tourism

    Nishorgo assisted the local entrepreneurswith architectural designs of the cottages

    and necessary training for running the

    business.

    Nishorgo has trained 54 young women

    and men from the local community as Eco-Guide to worked at their respective PAs.

    Among them 38 Men and 2 Women areworking with special standard of

    interpretation skills thus earninghandsome amount of income per month

    CBT Initiatives: Elephant RideCBT Initiatives: Elephant Ride

    At the northern part of Bangladesh there aresome privately owned elephants available.

    Previously the elephant owners used thoseelephants for log transport and circuses.

    Now, they are doing business by offering bothlong and short rides to the tourists at the PAs

    and help them to understand the essence of

    conserving Asian Elephant as well as generatinggood income

    CBT Initiatives: Ethnic CommunityCBT Initiatives: Ethnic Community

    There are several Ethnic Communities livearound the PAs of Bangladesh.

    They are very rich in cultural diversity and

    color full life style.

    Tourist can visit the villages subject to thepermission of village leader with the help

    of local Eco-Guides

    Another CBT initiative is Costal & Wetland

    Biodiversity Management Project

    This project working at

    Hakaluki Haor (Wetland), Sylhet

    Coxbazar to Teknaf See beach area

    Sentmartin Island

    CBT initiatives

    Bill board, signboard, Rest place, Observation Tower,

    Eco-cottage setup also promotion.

    Upcoming Initiative

    Integrated Protected Area Co-management

    This project will work for Protected Areas

    & Wetlands Biodiversity conservation

    Through Community involvement & other

    Activity.

    A part of this project is CBT development.

    First I want to introduce Co-Management Approach

    about sustainability point of view as well as communityinvolvement

    Goal of Co-ManagementConservation of biodiversity of Protected Areas through

    community participation in ecotourism initiatives

    Objective about Tourism To conserve the bio-diversity To create awareness about ethnic culture amongst the

    visitors

    To create tourism based opportunities f or incomegeneration of the local communities.

    Nature ProtectionCommunity people involved in different tourism businesses liketourist shop, guiding, cleaning, elephant riding, guest house,rickshaw puling, cultural program performance, traditional cloth salesetc. So they are willingly protecting nature because if the natureprotected, tourist will come & their business will be developed.

    Some of Community Female & Male Groups patrolling voluntarily toprotect bio-diversity & illegal felling at forest. The members of

    patrolling group initially get some training from CMC on alternativeincome generated activities like Nursery, Poultry & Dairy farming,Tree plantation to shrink their dependency on the forest. FurtherForest Department committed to give them some land of buffer zonefor tree plantation and in future they will get partial benefit from theseearning.

    Community people & Local Scouts is working forEnvironmental Care e.g. Traffic Management, stopping

    cook of picnic groups, cleaning, aware about wildlife'speace, sound pollution etc.

    In every year Forest Department / Co-Management isworking for Buffer Zone plantation through communityparticipation, Core Zone plantation, Medicinal speciesplantation, Fruit tree plantation for wildlife's etc.

    Social & Cultural ConcernTribal peoples have colorful culture. Tourist can enjoytheir culture & life style. In this way tribal people earning

    money by performing dances and other culturalprograms.

    Government initiatives increasing to promote eco-tourism,

    in this regards news & printing media always trying topromote eco-tourism including CBT businesses. CBTbusiness entrepreneurs also continuing marketing by

    brochure, advertisement, tour operators contact, websitelink etc.

    The inbound tour operators invited, visited & gettingupdate time to time about facilities & related things. All ofthem are developed Brochures, included information's intheir WebPages, offering packages etc.
