Our Mission

The mission of the Church Building & Loan Fund

(CB&LF) is to assist congregations younger than 30

years, as well as renewing congregations of any

age, who are planning to buy either a first house of

worship or a land site, or who want to build,

renovate, or refinance their church building, meeting

house, school, parsonage and/or other church

buildings.

Our Origins

1852

Delegates of the American Congregational Union

pledge $10,000 toward a total of $50,000 to be raised

in the first 6 months of 1853.

1853

$62,041 is raised ($1,983,342 in 2013 dollars). 232

churches in 16 states are built from these funds. The

first church building society in the United States is

born.

Return on Investmentfor a church

aka “stewardship”, “sustainability”

Second, what is your INVESTMENT? (243 acres,

bldgs, etc.)

What is your yield (harvest, fruit, result) based on

your MISSION & your INVESTMENT?

Return on Investmentfor a church

• How many disciples did you make last year?

• How many people did you feed? (food enterprise)

• How many thirsty received water? (water enterprise)

• To how many people did you extend hospitality (facility use, fee-paid and donated)

• How many sick and in prison did you serve? (visitation, re-entry)

• How many poor people obtained justice? (housing, literacy, employment, enfranchisement)

• How much surplus revenue did you generate to continue to advance MISSION? (streams of income)
