Yom Yerushalayim “Jerusalem Day”
Yom Yerushalayim, Wednesday, May 12, 2010, marks the reunification of the city by Israel during the Six-Day War. For years Jerusalem has had access to the Old City and to the many religious and historical sites i n c l u d i n g t h e Western Wall, the only remnant of the Holy Temple. In 1967, on the 28
th
day of the Hebrew month of Iyar, the city was made whole again. On Yom Yerushalayim we pray not only that the city remains undivided, but the Jerusalem will help bring about the union of all people. It will be celebrated at B’nai Israel at Shabbat morning services on May 15, 2010.
This month we will introduce a new Siddur both for Shabbat and Festivals and Weekdays. These magnificent volumes will transform the worship service. At first, the change may seem strange, but with time we will grow more comfortable with it. For a new generation this will be the Siddur on which they will be raised. Our celebration will begin on Friday evening May 14 and continue until May 22. Please consult the schedule of unique activities planned as we roll out our new Siddur Sim Shalom.
With the addition of the new siddurim, we are left with what to do with the old ones. We first want to offer them to our congregation. It is you who have used them. It is your fingers that have left an indelible impression on their pages. It is your kisses that have been absorbed into the binding. Just as the book has become a part of your life, you have become a part of its life. Therefore, we would like to offer them to you first. If you dedicated a siddur, please come starting May 16 and secure the volume. In June, after all who
have dedicated siddurim have had a chance to pick them up, the congregation at large is welcome to take a volume home. This is an opportunity to add a piece of CBI history to your family library. This is a chance to have a conversation with your children about what it meant to you to attend services in our holy Sanctuary.
Shalom,
Rabbi Jacob Luski
We just celebrated the wonderful holiday of Passover. We gathered around the table at one of the most celebrated Jewish rituals, the Passover Seder. The word seder is
the same root as the word siddur, prayerbook. On Passover the word seder refers to the order of the ritual. The siddur functions in a similar way with the order of our prayers. The siddur helps us to know when to recite which prayers. We attach personal and sentimental value to both our sedarim and our siddurim. Just as we recall Grandpa sitting next to us at the Passover seder, we recall the tallit that he wore. Each holds a special place in our hearts. If this is true individually, it is equally true communally. For the last eighty seven years our congregation assembled in a variety of locations. First it was on Arlington Ave, then on 59th Street, or for the last ten years on 58th Street. We came together to share lifecycle events and personal moments of triumph or tragedy. We knew we could return to B’nai Israel, pick up the siddur and engage in prayer. When our lives seem so chaotic there is the constant of the siddur.

BAR/BAT MITZVAH 5772 ORIENTATION MEETING
Students who will become Bar or Bat Mitzvah, from August 2011 through August 2012, are scheduled to meet with Rabbi Jacob Luski, Hazzan Paul Goldstein, Sara Latham, Executive Director and our Synagogue leadership on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., in the Atrium. This meeting is mandatory for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah student and parents in order to minimize poss ib le m isunders tand ings of expectations. The Synagogue, the clergy, and the religious school all take pride in our check and double check system for preparing our Bar/Bat Mitzvah candidates for their wonderful Simhas. If your child will celebrate Bar or Bat Mitzvah by August 31, 2012 and you have not received an invitation to the meeting, please contact Rabbi Luski in the synagogue office.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS
Has your address changed? Has your telephone number changed? Has your email address changed? Have you changed jobs? Have your offices moved? Has your work number
changed? Remember to call the
synagogue office with your changes.
What does a name mean? We are identified by our birth name our Hebrew name and some of us nick names. We are also identified by attributes like our gender, age, personality, physical appearance, profession, intelligence, talents and so
on. Who you become is partially due to nature and partially due to nurture - the influence of parents, relatives, spouse (partner or significant other), children, friends, teachers, clergy, and our faith. I believe our lives are constantly changing and enriched through relationships. Our pursuits are never ending. CBI is here to help you strengthen your Jewish connection spiritually through prayer, through socializing and through lifelong learning. There are many opportunities for you – daily minyan, Shabbat and holiday services, educational programs and social events. We are proud to be a full service congregation – providing a multitude of choices for all ages. Strengthen your ties, give something new a try, befriend someone you don’t know at shul. Extend yourself a little, the return will be worth it.
Sara Latham, Executive Director
From the Executive Director
Joan and I are both professional volunteers: from Sisterhood, Mitzvah Men’s Club, Mahaffey Theater, Menorah Manor, and for the last year, Citizen Patrol volunteer with the Pinellas Sheriff Department. I have worked on and chaired CBI journals, and now on the House Committee. I helped design the Tree of Life in the lobby and chair that project.
I was elected to the Kenneth City Council for 3 terms in office and have found that being Council person in charge of Department of Public Works is a very rewarding job.
What is your favorite Jewish Holiday? Purim! Dressing up in costume is fun and for 4 years I was the “Stop and Go” man. What values do you try to emulate and pass-on? When you do something of value it pays off. I like to get others involved so they might feel the same joy as I do. As a member of the Hevra Kadisha Burial Society, getting others to join the group who do this mitzvah is very important to me as is getting others to join the Mitzvah Men’s Club. Another is doing the services on Friday night at Menorah Manor with other men.
Who has made the biggest impact on your Jewish life? I have to say that Dr. Paul Cohen, a former president of CBI, has made the biggest impact on my Jewish life and from becoming active in the Mitzvah Men’s Club.
What motivated you to say Yes to CBI? The first factor in selecting CBI was the friendliness of the congregation, from Abe Katz to Anita Helfand. The second thing was the programming of the Congregation. We have so many different programs for every age group it keeps the congregation together.
What do you do to re-energize? On Friday evening when I go to lead services at Menorah Manor, The “Thank You’s” we get from the residents is a great energizer.
Karen Wolchuck Sher, President
Profile in Leadership Introducing Philip Redisch CBI Member since 1978
Please define yourself. Joan and I came to Kenneth City from Long Island, NY and wanted to find a Jewish community on the west coast of Florida. The lore of the Sun Coast brought us to Kenneth City. We chose CBI to be our congregation. . After joining the Mitzvah Men’s Club and going through all the chairs to be President of the Club and then President of the Florida Region and the Executive Board of the National Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, I was awarded the MA’ASIM TOVIM, doer of good deeds, from the Florida Region of the FJMC. From the JCC of Pinellas County I received the Sound of Honor award. Joan and I were also honored by Israel Bonds. In 2001 to 2003, when I was given the honor of being President of CBI, my friends roasted me and gave me a title of “King” Now most of them call me Pinchas Ha-Melach, Phil the King.
My two daughters Hope Robin, and BethAnn live close by. Our son Steven lives in Boston.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL
The school year is coming to an end. We have been keeping very busy all year. We began the year early with the High Holidays. The children learned about the symbols of the holidays as they dipped apples in honey and ate round raisin challah. The children helped decorate our synagogue Sukkah, then enjoyed snacks and lulav shaking under the branches. During the Hanukka season the preschoolers entertained at Benjamin Tower and all of the students enjoyed latkes and dreidels. Many preschool classes planted vegetables for Tu B’shevat, then harvested parsley and radishes for Passover. Purim brought a special treat. Each child made his very own hamentashen! What a delicious success! April brought Passover. All of the children participated in a Practice Seder and each student decorated his own Haggadah.
Now it is May. The VPK students are preparing for graduation to kindergarten. Another successful school year is winding down and summer plans are in full swing. Pauline Rivkind Preschool offers a great summer camp, full of outdoor activities, water play, special guests and more. Summer sessions run from June 8, 2010 through August 13, 2010. 2010-2011 registration for Pauline Rivkind Preschool is now taking place. We have classes for children one-year old through five-year olds. Our school participates in the Florida Voluntary Pre Kindergarten for children who turn four on or before September 1, 2010. Call the school office, ext. 211, if you have any questions or need a registration form sent to you!

BOOK REVIEW
Louis D. Brandeis, a Life By Melvin Urofsky
Melvin Urofsky, the author of this huge biography of nearly a thousand pages, is professor of law and public policy and
professor of history at Virginia Commonwealth University. Urofsky has devoted much of his career to documenting the personal and professional life of the great lawyer and justice, and so is eminently qualified to be author of this monumental new book. In “Louis D. Brandeis: A Life,” he demonstrates why Brandeis still matters, nearly 70 years after his death. The First Amendment’s right of free expression, the Fourth Amendment’s right to privacy and the due process clause’s focus on personal liberty (rather than property) all owe their current vitality to the creative genius of Justice Brandeis, whose dissenting opinions have become the law of the land.
Brandeis was certainly one of America’s most important social reformers and innovators, having developed savings bank life insurance and new ways of practicing law. He was the co-author of what may well be the single most influential law review article in history — on the right to privacy. And he was the most significant American in helping to establish the state of Israel. The son of Czech-Jewish immigrants, he grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. Brandeis was the first Jewish justice. “No justice of the 20th century had a greater impact on American constitutional jurisprudence,” Mr. Urofsky writes. Correction: In last month’s Bulletin, Esta Blaxberg’s name was inadvertently left off the list of the CBI Library Committee members. Esta was a long-time member of the Association of Jewish Libraries, New Jersey Chapter, and brings her wealth of experience to the group. Esta has been a major force in re-classifying the CBI Library books from the Dewey Decimal System to the Wiene System, which is specifically designed for Judaic libraries.

For college and graduate degrees, please provide their school, their degree and major and their future plans. Summer sendoff students will also be recognized during services. Please inform the office of their attendance. We also invite you to make a donation in honor of your graduate to the College Programming fund. These funds will be set aside to help with our college activities during the upcoming school year. We look forward to your children being with us this Shabbat.

FUNDRAISING REPORT
As the Fundraising VP, I am charged with raising funds for the shul. I am often asking for money. This month I am asking for your time. If you have some time, any time, CBI could use your talents. In an economic climate where it is harder for people to pull out their checkbook and make a donation of money, consider a donation of time!! Even if you feel you have no money or time to give, you can help CBI by online shopping and web searches (see below), shopping at GFS with a Fun Funds card and participating in the CBI SCRIP program!!!!! Pick one or 2 retailers that you frequent, and purchase a scrip card(s). We have a new much easier to use order form. They are available in the lobby and the office. Next time you shop or dine or fill up your car, it will feel good since you will have already paid by buying a SCRIP card and raised money for CBI. Learning about Scrip seems complicated at first but it is easy once you get the hang of it. Please contact either me or Jay Kauffman ([email protected]) and we would be glad to help you place your first order. We are looking for a few interested people to help this Committee succeed!
FAMILY PROGRAMS
Over 150 members gathered on Friday, April 23, to daven, sing, dine and experience Shabbat together. Membership co-chairs Kathleen Smith and Vivian Lurie kicked off our first in the new series, “What’s on Your Plate” with “Got Shabbat”. Todah Rabah to them and their committee who prepared such interesting recipes for us all to enjoy. A special Todah Rabah goes to Sheryl Sutton. She has worked tirelessly on marketing and will continue to provide us with creative graphics for flyers and lobby posters. Sunday, May 2 is Lag Ba’Omer and your next opportunity to join your congregational family for a day of fun, food and games. It is traditional in Israel to observe Lag Ba’Omer with bonfires and picnics. We will gather at Lake Seminole Park from 12:30 to 3:00 pm for a BBQ provided by the Mitzvah Men’s Club. There will be games for the kids as well as those young at heart!
Believe it or not it is Membership Directory time again. Please plan to place either a personal or business ad. If you respond early, you will be showing care and respect to your fellow congregants who are working on this project by saving them time with repeat follow up phone calls. Please do your part and respond! I hope you have noticed the new Torah Cover Designs for the Shalosh Regalim being displayed in the lobby. If you are interested in dedicating one of these beautiful covers, please contact me or the office. For online web searches and online shopping that benefit CBI, please go to www.goodsearch.com and enter Congregation B’nai Israel of St Petersburg in the spot that asks for your charity. Laurie Reiskind, 3rd Vice President, Fund Raising
In anticipation of Shavuot, Friday, May 14th’s “Got Shabbat” dinner will reflect the traditional foods of Shavuot. See the flyer in this bulletin with all the details and plan to join us! We have begun to plan for next year’s events and programming as we put dates on the 2010-2011 calendar. In the next issue of B’nai Israel Review the exciting “What’s on Your Plate” 2010-2011 schedule of events will be available! Your CBI staff and volunteers are working hard to think outside of the box and offer innovative programming. Your ideas and input are always valued!

The United States Senate Washington, D.D.
Dear Rabbi Luski,
I recently heard about your efforts to
urge members of Congregation B’nai Israel of St. Petersburg to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the selfless work that your congregation and others in our community have done in response to this devastating earthquake. I recently returned from a fact-finding trip to Haiti where I saw firsthand the tremendous challenges that the Haitian people and their government face in recovering from this horrible disaster. Haiti is the poorest country in the
Western Hemisphere and yet just a short flight from Miami. I believe that Floridians have a special role to play in assisting Haiti in this unique time of need. Your dedication and commitment to service are truly commendable and should serve as a model for others who want to give
back and make a difference,
Sincerely,
Bill Nelson,
Senator Florida
