Message from Patrick Miller, President & CEO

Seasonal Recipes: Pumpkin Cake

By now you’ve heard about the Equifax data breach. The company said it found no evidence of unauthorized activity on its main consumer or commercial credit reporting databases and that the breach was discovered on July 29th. Hackers were able to retrieve birth dates and addresses, as well as credit card numbers for 209,000 consumers. Documents with personal information used in disputes for 182,000 consumers were also taken.

Although this is unsettling, the actual number of those impacted with significant personal identifiable information is roughly

400,000: far less than in the reported 143 million individuals. While there have been no reports of any unauthorized activity as a result of this breach, it is still important we all stay vigilant in monitoring our finances to ensure our information is safe-guarded. Regularly login to your online banking with all of your financial institutions to check your transaction history and ensure everything is accurate. Likewise, be cautious of unsolicited e-mail offers or suspicious links.

Unfortunately, this is the world we live in today: Equifax, Experian, Target, Home Depot, Blue Shield, K-Mart… the list goes on and on. Hackers are smarter than ever and we find ourselves addressing these issues all too often. This is what initially compelled CBC to roll out our Security Plus Checking account. We are still extremely proud of the quality of the identity theft restoration services that accompany this account. CBC will continue to explore strong product offerings like our Security Plus Checking account to help protect our members in the event they fall victim to one of these breaches.

Don’t forget to stop by our Shred Day event at our Ventura Branch on October 14th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shredding personal documents is one great way to avoid potential identity theft. Likewise, December will be Identity Theft Awareness month at CBC. We will host a webinar with experts in the field who will share more prevention tips and information about the topic during the holiday season when identity theft is sadly on the rise. Please know that CBC will always have your back. Our teams will be on the lookout for fraudulent applications, attempted account takeovers and other unauthorized activity. We are continuously investing in our technology and training our team to be vigilant.

Daniel Bednar AVP of Enterprise Project Management

CBC is excited to introduce our new AVP of Project Management, Daniel Bednar! A Ventura County native, Daniel grew up in Oxnard and attended Rio Mesa High School. Directly after he graduated high school, he was recruited by the Naval Academy and began his career in the military. He graduated with a degree in political science and was commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer soon after. Daniel gained extensive intel experience after serving in Afghanistan for one year and graduating from intel school. He then spent three years working at the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, DC. He returned to Ventura County two years ago to be closer to his family and to serve as a Regimental Intelligence Officer on the Naval Base in Port Hueneme. Daniel has two sons, Caleb and Ryan. He is excited to start his career at CBC and to be part of building a new project management program.

Security with Tim

CBC in the CommunityAt CBC, we are dedicated to serving Ventura County through our community engagement. We enjoy involvement in a variety of activities including community volunteer projects, financial education initiatives, and events on the Naval Base of Ventura County.

One of our recent volunteer projects was United Way Day of Caring – our employees painted two classrooms at an after school center for kids who study science and technology. CBC also has a commitment to educating our community about financial literacy. We teach a 6 week financial education course at charter high schools throughout the county that give young adults practical advice about building credit, paying for college and saving for their future.

We have a strong connection with the Naval Base of Ventura County, as our first branch was on the base and it is a large part of our history. This year, we participated in a few key events that benefitted those who serve and their families such as Kids Day, the Seabee Jubilee and most recently the Point Mugu Surf Contest.

CBC supports over 70 community causes each year, and this number continues to grow.

Yet again, we have found that information security is constantly at risk. With the news from Equifax that over 143 million Americans have had their personal information compromised, it is clear to see that we all need to take efforts to protect our identities. I would like to share some tips to protect your personal information.

1) Place a “Security Freeze” on your credit reports through the major credit reporting bureaus. Basically, this locks down your credit reports so that no one can apply for credit in your name or review your credit

history without your knowledge. This is the most proactive and secure method of protecting your credit information.

2) Use a credit monitoring service. You more than likely already are eligible for some sort of credit monitoring service from one of the previous data breaches, but if not, consider using these services to review your credit profile and alert you to any changes that may occur.

3) Get a free copy of your credit report. By law you are allowed access to a free copy of your credit report from each of the top 3 bureaus by visiting annualcreditreport.com.

Day of Caring A group of nine CBC employees helped paint two classrooms at El Centrito Family Learning Centers in Oxnard. We had a blast painting the walls bright, inspiring colors and we hope the students enjoy them as much as we do!

Collaborative Military and Veteran Expo We were thrilled to sponsor the 6th Annual Military and Veteran Expo on Saturday, August 26. The collaborative serves the military and veteran community of Ventura County with free programs and resources.

Point Mugu Surf Contest We love supporting our service members and their families! CBC was a proud sponsor of the Point Mugu Surf Contest. On August 19 and 20, the Naval Base at Point Mugu was open to the public for this popular event that benefits NBVC quality of life programs for service members and their families. We gave out sunglasses and goodies to everyone who stopped by.

Dodger Day CBC sponsored CSU Channel Islands Dodger Day! Dodger Day is an event put on every year by the Alumni and Friends Association to raise money to help support alumni in both their personal and professional lives after graduation.

Avoid Shrinking Dollars

With what sources call the lowest interest rates in history coupled with the tax bite and inflation, you can see how savers are seeing their hard-earned savings shrink in value.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO. One remedy is to get a higher rate with a tax-deferred savings plan. This rate with a reduction of current taxes could result in significant savings growth.
