The Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) and Norit NV recently signed

a memorandum of understanding that establishes a strategic partnership to deliver relief for water-deprived people in Commonwealth countries.

Today, billions of people around the world are kept from a constant and reliable source of drinking water. Many, if not most, of them live in Commonwealth member states. Norit and CBC say they have developed the ‘Clean Water for All’ programme to supply potable water to water-stressed rural areas.

At the heart of the concept is Norit’s ultra-filtration (UF) compact water system which is used to treat polluted/questionable surface water to create high-quality potable water. The firm’s UF membrane technology effectively removes bacteria and viruses while its activated

carbon system removes odours, colour and other organic pollutants – while maintaining the healthy mineral content of water.

Dr Mohan Kaul, Director General, CBC, said: ‘Many of the Commonwealth member states are facing unprecedented water stresses caused by severe changes in climate patterns, population growth and water pollution as a result of economical development and/or lack of sanitary infrastructure. With human devel-opment and even life being threatened in many member states it is time to take decisive action.’

Cascal NV, a water and wastewater services provider, has announced

that it has acquired three Caribbean desalination businesses from Veolia Water North America.

Cascal will take over the ongoing develop-ment, operations and maintenance of water services for municipalities and private resorts on the islands of Antigua, Curacao and Bonaire, providing around 19 000 m3 (5 million gal-lons) of water per day using reverse osmosis (RO) desalination technologies.

‘This acquisition will add profitable revenue to our operations, while broadening Cascal’s capabilities in desalination and expanding our global footprint,’ commented Stephane Richer, Chief Executive Officer, Cascal.

‘This move is in keeping with our strategy to scale operations in response to the contin-

uing demand for efficient water technology, including sea-water treatment capabilities. We are confident that the new acquisitions will be successfully integrated with our exist-ing portfolio.’

Cascal acquired the three businesses for a total cost of US$6.9 million. They cur-rently generate a combined annual revenue of approximately US$4 million and are expected to increase the company’s EBITDA margin and net profit from the date of acquisition.

In addition, hav-ing a partner that supplies the two core technolo-gies for this programme – membrane ultrafiltra-tion and activated carbon – was a key driving factor behind the decision to work with Norit.’

Jürgen von Hollen, Managing Director, Norit Membrane Technology, added: ‘This endeavour is in line with our company’s vision to make a structural contribution in water-stressed regions. This programme, in partnership with the Commonwealth Business Council, gives our vision further guidance and pace as this partnership encompasses policy, people, technology and infrastructure.’

The CBC was formed during 1997 at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Edinburgh, Scotland. Its aim is to use the global network of the Commonwealth more effectively for the promotion of global trade and investment for shared prosperity. The CBC acts as a bridge for cooperation between business and government, between developed and emerging markets, and between large and small businesses.

Millipore acquires remaining ownership of its joint venture in India

Millipore Corp of Billerica, Massachusetts, USA, has

acquired the remaining 60% own-ership of its joint venture in India, Millipore India Pvt Ltd.

According to the company, the new subsidiary will enable it to invest in initiatives that will drive growth and expand its position in India’s thriving life science market. It says that India represents a critical part of its strategy to increase its growth by expanding its presence in BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and Singapore.

‘India has experienced unprecedented levels of investment and expansion in the country’s biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and life sci-ence research industries,’ said Martin Madaus, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Millipore.

‘By establishing direct operations in the coun-try, we will be able to more effectively execute our strategy and leverage our unique capabilities to accelerate growth and support our growing customer base in this dynamic market.’

Based in Bangalore, Millipore India is primarily a sales, service and manufacturing organisation that currently employs around 300 people, and has additional offices in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi. The joint venture’s revenues are split evenly between Millipore’s Bioprocess and Bioscience divisions.

The acquisition will have minimal impact on Millipore’s 2009 earnings per share but is expected to be accretive in future years through the elimination of the non-controlling interest. The transaction will not affect Millipore’s report-ed revenues and operating costs since the joint venture has been consolidated into the firm’s financial statements since 2006.
