Career Development Plan And Personal Statement

My aim is to secure a challenging position in a leading international Architectural firm andeventually to establish my own partnership. This will allow me to fully accomplish my objective to utilise my background and experience. I graduated form Medical School as an MD and started to work as a General Practitioner and A&E doctor for a few years but I was always interested in experiencing new aspects and therefore moved to Beijing, China to learn acupuncture. Always having the passion for architecture after being awarded the PhD degree in Chinese Medicine, I started my new education as a bachelor student of Architecture in ‘Girne American University’ in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. From the 2nd semester I transferred to the Canterbury branch of the mentioned university in the UK, and continued my courses as a ‘study abroad’ student.I was still looking for a better option. I decided to transfer to a real British Architecture School in order toacquirebetterknowledgeandtocompletetheRIBApart1qualification,thusformysecondyear I transferred to ‘London Metropolitan University’ where I graduated from BA of Architecture with a Second Upper Class.

Basic Design

BUS STOP PROPOSAL

Sketches of the initial idea for a new designed bus stop.

The proposal consists of using both the front space and the back of a typical bus stop.

In the current everyday seen bus stops the posterior side has been neglected.

In the new approach adding some high seats and a bar table to the back, in addition to the direct lighting, all provides some extra space for waiting people to sit, read or eat while at the stop.

The top left sketch shows the front with the normal seating we are all familiar, while the top right presents how the seats and the bar table are placed at the back. The side views indicate where the information panel will be located. The two sketches at the bottom right are illustrations of details and materials which have been proposed to be used.

Live Events And Engaging With Society

ROCKING CHAIR

As part of a ‘live project’ an engaging proposal had to be designed and built.

The proposal for the mentioned project as seen on the left is a combination of a rocking chair and a see-saw with the addition of a basket at the centre - which allows people to share together what they have brought - while relaxing and using the rocking chair.

The top left illustration is all the pieces which were cut in order to build the chair and the assembly principle is shown in the lower left coloured drawing.

The pictures on the right present the stages of making the chair from the cuts and then the fixtures and the finalassembled chair used within the community.

The chair was widely accepted and received a lot of attention. There were even families who were offering to buy this chair or even willing to pay for a new one to be built for their household.

The two lower pictures are from the 1:100 prototype made before the actual model in order to evaluate and understand possible flawsand remove them.

A Research On

TOWN HALLS AND URBAN SPACES

For the understanding of city spaces and public areas ‘Los Angeles Grand Park’ in front of ‘LA City Hall’ has been studied.

A drawing of Los Angeles CityHall -amagnificentArt Deco building - is presented on the top right side while the buildings surrounding the park, including the City Hall, could be seen in the axonometric illustration of the area can be seen on the top left side. This also presents different sections of the park with photographs to produce a better understanding of the scale, space and usage of this interesting public space.

The map on the lower left is the next step focusing onaspecificcomponentof an area (food in this instant) and indicating any food related business close to Austin Estate (Hays, London), which is the site for the main project.

Another researched field is crime withinAustin Estate, and on the lower right drawing the most common crimes (according to the London crime map) are not only shown but placed at the areas which they are most likely to happen.

As part of the practice these simple crime illustrations were drawn and planned to be placed as posters within the estate to increase the locals awareness, but was not accepted.

Public Dining Hall

DESIGN PROPOSAL - OVERVIEW

For the proposal of a dining hall in ‘Austin Estate’ of Hays (Northwest London), a building with a Perspex outer shell with a multi-angled shape is proposed. In addition having different heights creates sloped roof pieces with various slops.

The structure incorporates the existing walkway in the estate and the space underneath, to produce a closed area for dining.

Minor alterations to the existing structures were proposed to allow the irregular structure attach to the existing parts, along with the new skylights suggested for the illumination of the space underneath. These changes add some moments and excitement to the dull and monotonous rhythm of the walkway and underpass.

The drawings on the left are the front (south) elevation (top left) and the top view (bottom left). the picture on the bottom right is the mass modelling of the proposal showing the different segments separately and as a whole.

LOCATION, PLANS AND INTERIOR

In the proposal, following the concept of ‘doors and space’ the design utilises the used doors to mark and produce the desired spaces.

In addition the furniture which are used are second-hand and each probably different from the other, creating a unique dining experience while sitting between panels made of whole doors placed vertically or horizontally.

Moreover the space is protected with coloured Perspex (most probably a warm colour) and the different angles will create different shades inside the area.

The drawing on the top is showing the combination of exterior shell and the interior as it has been designed. The two larger drawings on the bottom show the plans for the Ground level (left) and First level (right) of the designed structure, while the little diagram indicates the location of the proposal within the Estate.

SECTIONS AND DETAILS

The two drawings presented here are the North-South section (facing Eastwards) on the top, and on the bottom, the East-West section (facing Northwards) of the proposal illustrated previously.

As mentioned earlier the internal spaces are created by using doors as wall partitions.

Furthermore, to create a vibrant space skylights have been placed and with the placement of vegetations the environment has been improved.

Sketching (1 of 3)

VICTORIAN BUILDINGS, ARNOLD CIRCUS, LONDON

For an architect the way to understand a space, the context, the relationships and the base of a design for any proposal, is through observing and sketches.

The sketches on the left are a series of on-site drawings , from the Victorian buildings around Arnold Circus (the firstCouncilhousesbuiltinLondon) presenting their beautiful design and the lovely neighbourhood in Shoreditch, East London.

Sketching (2 of 3)

BASTIDES OF SOUTH-EAST FRANCE

For the understanding of public spaces and the understanding of the importance of food and its effects on culture, architecture and also its role to gather people, the Bastides of South France were visited, closely observed and sketched.

These Bastides were old towns with the market square built at the centre allowing the town to expand around it. They were and yet are, the focal point in many of these old cities with some being very active and vibrant even in the 21st century!

The sketch on the lower right however is drawn from Moisssac Abby, the Monastery in the area.

Sketching (3 of 3)

BASTIDES OF SOUTH-EAST FRANCE

These market squares were mainly covered areas, consisting of an amazing colonnade structure of timber, stone or masonry - sometimes resembling Roman Temples - as the weight-baring structure holding the roof.

The structure was not limited to one storey but even two or three in some examples.

The sketches were produced on-site while visiting the area, emphasizing on structure, context, location and etc. depending on the s ign ificance.

RENDERING EXAMPLES

The importance of city voids in the urban planning can never be more emphasized, especially with the high density urbanization of the modern times.

One of these spaces in the city of London is Hoxton Square in the area of Shoreditch. East London.

The first step ofunderstanding the space as previously mentioned is the observation and sketching, and thus the right side drawing was done from the area (the west side is not included).

This sketch shows how the different buildings are sitting next to each other and creating the unique experience of new and old next to each other.

The rest of the drawings are renders of the buildings as they actually are.

MASS MODELLING EXPERIENCE

Mass modelling allows the design to start from a visually understandable medium. Any shape or line or plan drawn on paper or on a screen will not be comprehended as well as if it is seen as a 3D model.

The models either made to scale (such as these on this page) or just a simple imitation of the shape, allow the architect to fully understand his work, and then to adjust or re-structure any possible flaw, if necessary ordesired.

The pictures here are showing the variety of models which were made to fit in thebasemodel, for the purpose of practice, and to reach to a final satisfactory massfor the final design.

EXISTING STRUCTURES AND SITE DRAWINGS

Another step in any design especially in a built area is the existing structures and the contex t .

In the site for this brief, at Bermondsay Spa Terminus area, Southeast London, adjacent to the via duct of national rail bridges and railways, the existing buildings were observed and drawn.

The two top drawings here are produced using AutoCAD software and are a representation of the via duct showing the North-East elevation (top drawing) and the Northeast-Southwest section of the viaduct and the site (bottom drawing).

The AutoCAD drawing on the bottom of this page is presenting the Bermondsay Spa Terminus area, illustrated in a front -folded down facade manner.

The buildings currently existing at the site have been removed from the drawing showing the possible location of the future proposal.

The illustration aims to show the context and the site at the same time by putting the facade of the immediate buildings next to the site on the map.

Ideas And Sketches

DESIGN CONCEPT AND PROGRESS

The following sketches are the initial ideas of the design, considering the possible appearance of the proposal.

These sketches were made alongside the mass modelling experience to achieve an idea of the details once the satisfactory mass was achieved.

The initial idea was based on an isolated groundfloorforamarketsquare and the rest of the structure to be built on columns as of a free standing building inducing the idea that thegroundfloorandtherest of the building are separate entities.

This proposal was inspired by, and resembling, the columnar structure of the market squares of the Bastides (sketches shown before) and a few other precedents such as the Great Mosque of Cordoba, the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in Rome, and etc. .

3D VISUALIZATION WITHIN THE CONTEXT

As much as mass modelling and sketching is important in understanding the design, 3D graphic visualization within the context, seeing how the design will appear in the end and also its impact on the existing urban design is s ignificant.

These 3D graphic illustrations produced by Sketchup Software, are representations of how the building would appear in the already existing urban layout.

The drawing on the top is an AutoCAD drawing of the Northeast elevation of the finaldesign as it will appear in the city.

The two illustrations on the left are the internal spacing and structure of the Ground Floor from two different angles showing the interior layout,

DETAILED SECTION AND FACADE

As much as the exterior has importance for an architect, the interior has as well. No building will be perfect if the interior does not satisfy the needs even if the appearance of it is breath taking.

To understand the interior an overall section is very helpful.

The drawing on the left is a whole section illustrating the different levels, various parts and possible functions which have been considered in the design.

The rendered drawing on the right is an expression of the facade and the materials which are suggested for use and the colour variations of them. These material and their selections will help the design to anchor and blend in the existing context which it is placed in, and these interrelations will facilitate this process.

ANNOTATIONS AND SPATIAL INDICATIONS

It is necessary to know the placement of the required spaces and the layout of any design. It is also important to consider the arrangement and localization of designated spaces in a plan even in a simple way.

The drawings of this page indicate the possible arrangement and layout for the various businesses that might be interested in acquisition of the space or have already required and inquired for it. This arrangement is forimprovingtheefficiencyandefficacyoftheproposalasawhole, butis not the only possible way.

TECHNICAL DETAILS AND ANNOTATIONS

Any design at a certain stage has to be detailed and the features of it must be specifically and clearly indicated. The common languagebetween those involved in the process of making the proposal from paper to reality is the technical drawings.

The top left illustration is a section of the window used in the building and how it is placed within the wall. The one at the bottom left shows how the cold bridge from the exterior to the interior of the structure has been blocked. The cold bridge here is due to the fact that the framework of the structure at two sides (elevations) of the facade is exposed and is placed in front of - exterior to - the facade.Atthebottomright,thedrawingillustratesthefloor-to-ceilingwindowatthe edge of the facade.

DETAILED MODELLING

The photographs of this final page are thedetailed models of the proposal .

The two pictures on the right are showing the Ground floor layoutand its relation to the existing urban structure along with showing the structure beneath the viaduct.

As it is shown the interior of the Ground floor isheavilyinfluencedbythepassages created under the viaduct of national rail, adding a new yet similar sequence to this area.

The proposal is marked within the red dashed lines on both pictures.

The four pictures on the leftarethefinalproposalas a whole .

These pictures intend to show the exterior of the building and the way the facade is designed.

Also it is a presentation of the relationship between the base (the Ground Floor, which is the market area) with the tower (the offices and residentialsection).
