The DescentClip 4 – Ryan Banks
Clip 4 – Lighting This scene is basically not lit at all, apart from the lights on their head. This is so you cant see what is going on, just like the characters themselves and it adds to the panic and confusion.
The green colors in this scene are used so you know you are looking through the handheld camera. The night vision shows up green so this allows you to know you're in the POV of one of the characters, we see what they’re seeing.
The lighting emphasizes the isolation and the claustrophobia in the scene. This is because the lights on their helmets keep bouncing off the walls either side of them so you can see how isolated they are.
Clip 4 – Location
The location is very isolated with no room to move about. It’s located inside of a cave which adds to one of the rules of horror, isolation.
Clip 4 – Costume and Props
The lights on their helmets are a important prop because it’s the only source of light in the scene. By using these as the only source of light, you cant see anything in the cave and it adds to the panic and confusion that both the characters and the audience are feeling.
The handheld camera used in the scene allowed the audience to get a POV look of what the characters themselves could see. It was a perfect way to introduce the monster as well because we saw the monster for the first time in exactly the same way as the characters themselves first witnessed the monsters.
The flare used in this scene is to light up the area after the confusion and panic has passed. By lighting up the area, you can truly see how isolated they are with no where to go. Also, each of the characters are all dressed in their own, distinct colors when they get split up in the film.
Clip 4 – Sound The shouting in the scene adds to the panic in the scene and shows that the characters themselves are starting to panic and get scared.
The scream that comes from the monster is used so it has its own distinct sound, so if you hear the same sound again later in the film, you know that it is the monster(s)
