British Colonial Rule: The British who ruled Sri Lanka before

independence favoured the Indian Tamils who spoke English and could help them work in the Civil Service. (L1/1) They treated the Indian Tamils better than the Sinhalese (L2/2) Feeling marginalised, the Sinhalese implemented policies which favoured their own people (Sinhalese) (L3/3) and marginalised the Indian-Tamils (L3/4).

Citizenship Rights: Upon independence, the Sri Lankan

government granted citizenship only to those born in Sri Lanka (L1/1) or whose fathers or grandfathers were born in Sri Lanka. Although they contributed to the economy of Sri Lanka, the Indian Tamils who worked on the plantations were denied citizenship rights. (L2/2) They were very angry and frustrated that they were treated badly. (L3/3) The Indian Tamils were also frustrated that the Sri Lankan government was insincere in solving the problem as they took more than 20 years to grant the remaining Indian Tamils in Sri Lanka citizenship. Language Policy: Under the British, many Tamils worked in the

civil service and were promoted. This made the Sinhalese jealous. (L1/1) When Sri Lanka became independent, the Sinhalese put in a policy where Tamil civil servants had to learn Sinhala within 3 years or be dismissed (L2/2). This angered the Tamils because they no longer had a bright future as they could lose their jobs or promotions. (L3/3) Protests took place and it took a very long time for Tamil to be recognised as a language of administration in Tamil areas, making the Tamils frustrated with the government’s insincerity. University Admission: Tamil youths scored high marks in

university entrance exams and could gain entry into prestigious courses. This angered the Sinhalese. (L1/1) When Sri Lanka became independent, the Sinhalese made Tamils score higher marks to enter university. As a result, many Tamil youths could not enter the prestigious courses. (L2/2) They were frustrated as they no longer had a bright future. (L3/3) Many of them left to join the Tamil Tigers resulting in a brain drain of bright Tamil youths. (L3/4)

Resettlement Policy: The Sinhalese government resettled poor

Sinhalese peasants in Tamil lands where they were given land to cultivate. (L1/1) Later on, Buddhist monks and Sinhalese Army troops also came to stay in Tamil lands. (L2/2) The Tamils were angry and frustrated because the Sinhalese peasants were taking up their land (L3/3) and there was also religious tension due to differences in religion. Furthermore, the Tamils were also bullied and ill-treated by the Sinhalese Army troops. (L3/4)
