Term 2 Week 2 — 9 May 2019
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome Back
Term 2 has started with all
systems go. From all
accounts many of you
were able to get a bit of
time off with the public
holidays so close together
and the students have
enjoyed sharing these
wonderful family memories with us over the
past week since they have returned.
Cattai PS at the Hawkesbury Show
This year Cattai PS students have been
involved in a number of events for this
weekend’s Hawkesbury Show. Be sure to
check out ‘Splash’, ‘Sticky Beak‘ and ‘Fluffy’
our resident Peking ducks who will be on show
as part of the “Poultry ‘R’ Us” Inter-Schools
Duck Challenge. Also each class has entered
into the painted chook competition where the
students had to paint a plywood cut out of a
painted chook using themes such as
Agricultural, Breed, Humour, Food Resource or
Zany colours.
STEM Learning Spaces Are Now Complete.
Last Wednesday we received our ‘Lab Stools’
for our STEM room. These combined with our
other new additions such as flat screen TV,
recycled mats, our STEM outdoor learning
benches and a range of science resources
have made the space look quite impressive to
say the least. These purchases were a P&C
funded venture and I want to say a big thank
you to the P&C and the wider Cattai
community for your support with all of our
fundraising events. This amazing learning
space, that the students use every
Wednesday as part of their STEM lessons,
wouldn’t be possible without your support.
NAPLAN Online
NAPLAN online testing will begin next week for
Year 3 and Year 5 students. Year 3 students will
continue to complete their writing assessment on
paper. All other assessments for both Year 3 and
Year 5 will be completed on the computer. Last
years assessment was a success both in terms of
the engaging new online format and students
assessment results so we are looking forward to
our involvement in NAPLAN online again in 2019.
Fencing
We have been given an update on the fencing
project and all things going to plan it should
begin in Week 4 on the 20th May. We are having
a 2100mm high black fencing installed around
the perimeter of the school site. They are
anticipating that the project could take up to 3
weeks, weather permitting. There may be some
slight disruptions during drop off and pick up
especially when they are building the fencing
along the front gate. If I can ask that everyone
proceed with patience and caution during this
time.
Update on School Administration Manager Position
I am pleased to welcome Miss Hussey to the
Cattai PS family as our substantive School
Administration Manager (subject to a 10 day
appeal process).
Miss Hussey has done an outstanding job as our
relieving SAM and we are very excited to have
her on a more permanent basis.
Take care

Book Reviews
Students have loved reading so much that many
students have wanted to share the books they
are reading. Each lesson students have an
opportunity to do a mini book review.
This has been great because students:
- share the books they have enjoyed reading.
- have deeper conversations about books during
borrowing time.
- get to hear about a wider range of books and
have more options when looking for something
new to read.
Weekly Borrowing
Students have the opportunity to borrow from the
library each week. All students need to do is bring
in any books they have borrowed previously
along with a fabric bag to help protect the books
in transport to and from school. Cattai PS library
bags can be purchased for $10 each from the
uniform shop.
Students from each class can borrow the
following amount of books:
C3: 4 books
C2: 3 books
C1: 2 books
S.T.A.R.S.
Each week students complete a S.T.A.R.S. lesson.
S.T.A.R.S. stands for Strategies To Achieve Reading
Success. It focuses on explicit teaching of
comprehension strategies and involves reading
passages of text and answering multiple choice
questions based on the text. There is a lot of
discussion around not what the answer is but
more around the strategies and how we arrived
at that answer. Students are then able to apply
that strategy to a range of questions in the future.
This term’s strategies are: Cause and Effect,
Comparing and Contrasting, Making Predictions.
STARS Sample: Making Predictions
Description:
A prediction is a good guess about something that will
happen next or in the future. Strategy:
Use your own knowledge and information from the
text.
