This thesis approaches architecture through an engagement and

immersion into the natural world. It seeks to delve into some of

those hidden and forgotten ways of being by attempting to decentre the

privileged position of the individual. In an attempt to attune oneself to

some of the micro vibrations of the animal world, the study of an insect,

the moth is the catalyst for exploration. The moth as subjective 'other'

activates an intersubjective experience to prod the boundaries of habitual

perception. A process of differentiation defines this intersubjective

territory. It is a process that continually shifts, that makes and unmakes;

it is the condition under which material beings quiver and expand within

each other in a shifting fabric of phenomenal fields.

My engagement with the moth elicits a parasensitivity to the

lightness and receptivity of touch; how the moth ‘touches’ its world,

how its world ‘touches’ it, and concurrently how things touch me. Might

architecture extend itself out to be receptive to and illuminate both

animal and human durations alike. And how do these durations quiver

and unfold, and reverberate within each other. This project will approach

architecture as a sort of evolutionary process where the coming together

of multiple vibrations enable the architecture to come into being.

CATOCALA RELICTA THE FORSAKEN

Every thing, every process, every event or encounter is itself a mode

of becoming that has its own time, its own movement, its own force.
