Design Features
Features & Benefits
Catnic Steel Lintels provide a combination of strength and light weight resulting
in efficient loadbearing performance and increased productivity on site
> No need for lifting equipment as two men can lift even the longest length
into position.
> No delay to blockwork, it can be continued immediately.
> No propping required while waiting for concrete to cure.
> Corrosion protected.
> Safe Working Loads are all given in the tables provided and have been
substantiated by independent testing.
> Efficient plaster key.
> Brackets for column fixing provide considerable time savings.
SpecificationsCorrosion Protection System
In addition to the use of high quality galvanised steel, the lintels are further
protected against corrosion by the addition of a thermosetting polyester powder
coating. This coating is applied by an electrostatic process that ensures close
control over quality and thickness of coating.
This duplex system of an organic coating over galvanised steel provides excellent
long-term resistance to the corrosive elements present in all building situations.
NOTE:
Lintels type CN92 and CN102 are designed for internal use only and are supplied
without powder coating.
Lintels should be installed with a 20cm bearing at each end and should be fully
bedded on blockwork mortar. Our Technical Department should be consulted if
bearings less than 20cm are required.

Quality Assurance
Catnic steel lintels are made to the highest quality standards.
> The steel used in their manufacture is in accordance with
BSEN 10327:2004-DX51D+Z275
> Lintels conform to the specifications laid down in BS 5977: Part 2: 1983.
> Catnic was the first lintel manufacturer to be awarded a kitemark symbol
and the range is identified with the symbol in this brochure.
BSI licences the use of the kitemark only after:
> It has independently tested the products and is satisfied that it conforms with
the BS specification.
> It has visited and assessed the manufacturer to ISO 9001 and is satisfied that
the quality control systems used ensure that the product continues to conform
to specifications.
Technical Advisory Service
A comprehensive scheduling service is offered without charge or obligation. Simply
send us a set of drawings (plans, sections and elevations) for any size project and
we will provide you with a comprehensive schedule of requirements.
In addition to the range shown in this catalogue many other sizes and types are
available upon request.
Installation
> Damaged lintels should not be used.
> 20cm end bearing should be allowed at each side.
> Lintels should not be cut down from manufactured lengths without prior
approval.
> If you have any doubt concerning any installation, please contact Catnic
for advice.
> For cavity lintels, the inner and outer leaves must be raised together.

Plaster AccessoriesOur comprehensive range of Plaster Accessories are precision engineered and simple to use. Fixing by nail or plaster dab is straightforward and fast, generating arises, edges, corners and joints that are easy to form and resistant to chipping, cracking and impact damage.
12 Catnic International
Catnic International 13
The most appropriate Catnic bead should be chosen to suit the
application, required plaster depth and the desired finish of the work.
The application and installation of Catnic beads should be in
accordance with BS 5492:1990 Code of Practice for internal
plastering and BS 5262:1991 Code of Practice for external
renderings.
Beads may be trimmed to length using tinman’s shears across the
wings and a fine toothed saw across bead noses.
Use one of the following methods to fix Catnic angle beads and
plaster stop beads:
a) Using galvanised or stainless steel nails (compatible with bead
material) complying with BS 1202: Part 1, fixed at a maximum of
600mm apart. When nailing to a solid background the line of the
bead will follow the line of the background.
b) Pressing the bead onto dabs of the same material as the
undercoat. Dabs should be applied at a maximum of 600mm
apart. This method will even out minor irregularities in the line of
the background, although the line of the bead will tend to generally
follow the line of the background.
c) When beads are used with metal lath backgrounds,
galvanised or stainless steel tying wire may be used to
secure the beads in position. Soft galvanised wire to BS
443 and soft stainless steel wire complying with BS 1554
should be used to match the bead and lath materials. All
wires should be twisted tightly and the ends bent away
from the finished face of the coating.

How to Install a Catnic Plasterer’s Bead
In normal circumstances, matured plasterwork may be
regarded as dry and therefore non-corrosive. Risks of corrosion
in galvanised accessories only normally become apparent
during the initial plaster drying out period, which should be
kept to a minimum, and subsequently during periods of heavy
condensation.
The use of sand or water contaminated with soluble salts in
plastering mixes should be avoided as should soluble chlorides
as they are likely to increase the risk of metal corrosion. The
presence of sea salts in sand used in plastering which is in
contact with galvanised accessories will often cause rust
staining and should therefore be avoided.
In external applications and, in conditions where heavy
condensation, persistent damp or regular exposure to moisture
are likely, stainless steel, PVC-U or PVC-U nosed products
should be specified.
In general, care should be taken to ensure that metal
accessories are kept dry and distortion is prevented during
storage and handling. Care should also be taken to prevent
mechanical damage to the galvanised coating.
Stainless steel products are for use specifically with cement
based renders. Contact our Technical Services Department
if considering the use of stainless steel beads with Gypsum
plaster.

Galvanised & Stainless Steel
Expanded metal type bed joint reinforcement is supplied as an anti-crack
reinforcement in the design and construction of brick and block masonry.
Guidance for its use is given in BS 5628 : Part 3 : 2001 cl.5.4.5
It is generally provided at areas of high stress concentration to dissipate these
stresses to areas of low stress. A typical example would be at a point where the
section of wall changes, such as at a door or window opening. The cracking
of masonry due to changes in temperature, changes in moisture content and
settlement of foundations can all be controlled by the use of block reinforcement.
