Myscientificdiscoveriesonpastecosystemdynamicshaveinformedglobalchangescience,resourcemanagementdecisions,andconservationefforts.Togainknowledgeoftheseinteractionsoverlongtimeframes,myteamanalyzesthefossils(pollen,charcoal,andotherplantremains)andothercomponents(geochemical,lithological)preservedinthe

sedimentsoflakesandwetlands.Lakescanbethousandsofyearsold,andtheirsedimentspreservearich,andoftenuntapped,reservoirofecologicalinformationaboutabroaderrangeofenvironmentalconditionsthanwecanobservetoday.Muchofmyresearchhasdrawnontheselake-sedimentrecordstoreconstructtheevolutionoftemperateforestsinthewesternU.S.,andcomparableecosystemsinNewZealand,southernSouthAmerica,Europe,andAustralia.Theseforestsarehighlyvulnerabletoclimatechange,servingpresentlyasbothcarbonsourcesandcarbonsinks,throughthealterationoffireandotherbioticinteractions.Mystudiesinboththenorthernandsouthernhemisphereshavetracedvegetationdynamicsinresponsetolarge-scaleEarthprocesses,suchasmountainbuildingandglaciationonlongtimescales,aswellastheinfluenceofclimateandpeopleovershortertimespans.MystudentsandIhavedescribedtheconnectionsbetweenclimate,disturbance,andvegetationchange(mostrecentlyinIglesiasetal.,2015,2018;Krauseetal.,2015;IglesiasandWhitlock,2015)andthevulnerabilityoftemperateforesttohuman-setfires(mostrecently,Whitlocketal.2015;McWethyetal.2014).MyresearchinYellowstoneNationalParkduringthefiresof1988hasledtonewmethodsforreconstructinglong-termfirehistories;thesetechniquesareusedaroundtheworld.Overthelast25years,Ihavehelpedbuildaglobalpaleofiresciencecommunity,includingcreatinganinternationaldatabasethatmakesfire-historyinformationavailabletoall.

Mysecondpassionistointegratelearninganddiscovery.Mylabhasalwayssupportedalivelygroupofpost-docs,graduatestudents,andpost-docs,andweregularlyhostvisitingscientistsfromaroundtheworld.Ipridemyselfonthefactthat22ofmy35graduatestudentshavebeenwomenandthatmystudentshavegoneontosuccessfulcareersinacademia,government,conservationorganizations,andtheprivatesector.Educationformealsomeansreachingoutsideoftheuniversitytoinformbroaderaudiencesaboutenvironmentalchange.Inthisregard,Iamco-foundingdirectoroftheMontanaInstituteonEcosystems,astatewideinstitutethatdrawsontheextraordinarylandscapesofMontanaandbeyondtounderstandcomplexecosystemsincludingtheinterconnectednessofpeopleandnature.In2017,aleadapartnershipofscientists,governmentagencies,localcommunities,andnon-profitorganizationstodevelopthefirstMontanaclimateassessment.Thiseffortispartoflong-termenterprisetoprovideMontanacitizenswithtimelyinformationthataddressesreal-worldenvironmentalchallenges.Stakeholder-drivensciencerequirespublicengagement,andIspendconsiderabletimegivingpubliclectures,fieldingquestions,engagingteachersandstudents,participatinginresourcemanagementandconservationworkshops,andprovidingcommentarytothemedia.Thisbroaderengagementallowsmetosharemyresearchwithothersaswellasstimulateit.ResearchdiscoveriesthatIhaveledorbeenactivelyinvolvedin:

1. Insightsontheevolutionofmodernforestecosystemsandtheirsensitivitytoclimatechangeandhumaninfluences

2. Newmethodsforreconstructingpastfireactivity,whicharenowusedaroundtheworld

3. ImprovedunderstandingofthevegetationandfirehistoryofwesternNorthAmerica,Ireland,southernSouthAmerica,NewZealandandAustraliabasedonpollenandhigh-resolutioncharcoalrecords

BRIEFBIOGRAPHYIstartedmylifeinWashingtonDCandthenupstateNewYork.Myfatherwasamedicalschoolprofessorandmuchofmychildhoodwasspenthangingoutinresearchlaboratories,helpingfeedexperimentalmiceandrabbits,washingglassware,anddustingskeletons.Myparentsshareadeeplovefortheoutdoorsthatrangesfromreciting19thcenturynaturepoetrytocollectingandmountingbutterflies,andthispassionwaspassedtomytwobrothersandme.Atage14,myfamilymovedtoColoradowhereIwastransformedbytheopportunitytohikeinspectacularmountains,enjoyfieldsofwildflowersandskiindeeppowder.Atthatpoint,IknewthatIwouldneedtofindacareerthatwouldinvolvebothscienceandtheoutdoors.

AtColoradoCollege,myfirstclasswasgeologyanditwasaperfectfitforme.AninspiringprofessortaughtusabouttheEarthbydraggingusmountaincliffswherewewereexpectedto“read”therocks.FieldtripstoDinosaurandGreatSandDunesNationalmonumentswillstaywithmeforeverasmomentsofawe,discoveryandunforgettablecamaraderie.Duringmysenioryear,IhadthegoodfortunetoworkwithDr.EstellaLeopold,thefamouspaleoecologistanddaughterofAldoLeopold,whowasthenattheUSGeologicalSurveyinDenver.EstellawasthefirstwomenscientistthatIhadeverworkedwith,andforme,shewasaforceofnature.Herinfectiousenthusiasmforsciencewasevidentinthelab,andherpassionforconservationwasclearthroughherpublicadvocacy.Morethanthat,paleoecologywasanexcitingwaytoblendmyinterestsinearthhistoryandmodernecology.Thisinterdisciplinaryfieldofgeologywasachancetounderstandthepresentbyusingthepastasaguide.IngraduateschoolattheUniversityofWashington,IcontinuedmystudieswithEstellainhernewpositionasDirectoroftheQuaternaryResearchCenter.Ilovedtheopportunityto

combinetheverybestofgraduatestudieswithresearch.MyadvisorsencouragedmetosubmitmyearlydiscoveriestothejournalScience,whereitwaspublishedasasole-authoredpaperandfeaturedonthecover.Whatanintroductiontoacademia!ThetrainingingraduateschoolandlaterasapostdocatTrinityCollegeDublintaughtmemuchaboutrunningaresearchprogramandmentoringstudentsandearly-careerscientists.IhaveappliedtheseskillsinacademicpositionsatCarnegieMuseumofNaturalHistory,UniversityofPittsburgh,UniversityofOregon,andnowatMontanaStateUniversity.

IamaProfessorinEarthSciencesandDirectoroftheMSUPaleoecologyLaboratory.Mylabgrouphostsinternationalscientistsinterestedinlearningourtechniquesforreconstructingpastclimate,vegetationandfire.Yellowstoneisinourbackyardandoffersanunparalleledscientificlaboratoryforusbutmygroupworksatfieldsitesaroundtheworld.Iwasthefoundingco-DirectoroftheMontanaInstituteonEcosystems,thefirststatewideinstitutedesignedtopromoteinterdisciplinaryresearchonpressingenvironmentalchallenges,andleadauthorontheMontanaClimateAssessment.Inthiscapacity,Ihavebeenabletoguidestate,regionalandnationalagendasonclimatechangeanditsimpacts,hirenewinterdisciplinaryfaculty,andleadmajorresearchandeducationinitiatives.Iamanacademicleaderwhotrulybelievesinserving,andIusemypassionforenvironmentalsciencetoinspireandencourageothers.
