Presidents Message Dear Quilting Friends, I have a lot of fun at guild and board meetings, but there is always some planning and packing involved. This past week, I loaded my car with papers for Suzy, a Fidget Quilt for Dayle, A KidzQuilt for Ginny, lots of free materials and trims for the free table, an agenda for Cass, a framed print for Ann, auction sheets for Joy, pillowcase fabric for Elva, etc. Needless to say, I keep to dolists. I also received goods from Kathy, talked to a different Kathy and Brenda, and then checked in with Karen, Katie, Ellen, and Pam. Do I sound like a mom describing her day? As I ran around giving and getting things, it occurred to be that I am playing some games. Sometimes its Hot Potato (Give something to someone and hope it doesnt come back), sometimes its Tag (Find someone and give them a message or get an answer), and sometimes it s Musical Chairs (Hurry! Grab that seat, or book, or handout!) I am convinced some of you are playing Hide and Go Seek. I have on my list to see you at the meeting and get the whateverand go about my business. I scan faces until right up to seven oclock and decide it will have to wait until next month. Then I start the meeting and there you are, sitting in the audience and smiling at me! Howd that happen? President’s Message

Dear Quilting Friends,

I have a lot of fun at guild and board meetings, but there is always some planning and packing involved. Needless to say, I keep “to do” lists. I also received goods from Kathy, talked to a different Kathy and Brenda, and then checked in with Karen, Katie, Ellen, and Pam. Do I sound like a mom describing her day?

As I ran around giving and getting things, it occurred to be that I am playing some games. Sometimes it’s Hot Potato (Give something to someone and hope it doesn’t come back), sometimes it’s Tag (Find someone and give them a message or get an answer), and sometimes it’s Musical Chairs (Hurry! Grab that seat, or book, or handout!) I am convinced some of you are playing Hide and Go Seek. I have on my list to see you at the meeting and get the “whatever” and go about my business. I scan faces until right up to seven o’clock and decide it will have to wait until next month. Then I start the meeting and there you are, sitting in the audience and smiling at me! How’d that happen?

There are two games I dread. One is “Gotcha!” That’s the game where things are left behind and I don’t know what to do with them. I admit that I’m not at my best after nine. Some of the detritus goes in my car, some in the garbage,

Monthly Membership Meetings February 17 Catherine Redford- Trip Around the World in Folk Art Stitches March 16 Beverly Fine- Do You See What I See? April 20 Mel Beach - Challenge Yourself November 16 Cynthia Wismann - Journey to Becoming an Art Quilter

and some to good souls who help take things for Shelter Bed Buddies. The other game is Groundhog Day. That’s when I replay all of the things I wished I’d said or done. They go on my “to do” list for the next meeting. I hope you’ll come play with us.

Happy Quilting!

Membership Report Kathy Shanley

We had 118 members attending our Janu-ary meeting. In addition, we had 13 guests and 3 new members. Please join me in welcoming new members, Clarice Vichich, Kate Creedon, and Rebecca Ivey. We also had three members join by mail who were not able to be at the January meeting, Susan Rousse-Lague, Janet Jozwiak and Fiona Oxford. Our total members to date is 212. Please remember to wear your membership badges to each meeting as it makes check-in much quicker and it's always nice to put a face to a name for those of us "newbies"!

Thank you for your patience and under-standing as Linda Starkey and I transition the membership chair.

New for 2020—UFO Challenge Suzy Weinbach

Check your project boxes and select 4 or 5 unfinished projects. Join the fun. $10 gets you a spe-cial pin, prizes and more. What is a UFO...any project that is not finished. Maybe it needs only a bind-ing, quilting or a label. Maybe you haven't started the project yet. You choose what you want to finish within 2020.

No UFO's hiding at your place? Then make Charity quilts or a small quilt for the Quilt Show auction.

There will be a special table at each meeting to show your finished project, earn buttons to fill your "pin" and receive prize tickets for goodies at the December 2020 Holiday Party.

The more Participants, the more $$$ for prizes!

50 Participants equals $500 for prizes and 250 finished quilt projects! Wow!

More information is available on the Guild website or you may contact Suzy Weinbach at [email protected] or (303) 517-1587.

Cottage Groups Denise Cordova Collado

Lorraine Darke, who had offered to run a 4-5 month program in dyeing of fabrics, notified us that some family difficulties had come up which prevent her from following through with her plan to provide instruction and a venue for teaching dyeing this year. Lorraine is hopeful that she might be able to organize and schedule the programs earlier in the season later this year and regrets bowing out at this time.

Are you interested in forming a new cottage group? It is not as difficult as you might think! Please contact Denise Córdova Collado at 941-924-6061 or 703-785-6828 or at [email protected] with your ideas.

Manatee Patchworkers Classes

Tips and Tricks Delores Simpson

This month's tip comes from one of our talented members, Rebecca Yoder. Becky hails from Middlebury, Indiana, and is a multi-award winning applique artist. You may remember her fabulous appliqued quilt, "Forest Friends", which won ribbons at our last Quilts in Paradise show and recently hung at the fall Paducah quilt show.

Becky recommends always starching your fabrics before using them for applique or piec-ing. As a cost-saving measure and because she likes the results, she makes her own spray starch us-ing 1/4 cup cornstarch to 2 cups water. Mix it together and pour into a spray bottle. Mist onto your fabric and then press with an iron.

If it helps Becky make award-winning quilts, it's good enough for me! As with any starch, I recommend you wash your finished quilt before storing it to remove the starch. No need to attract any critters....

Mid-Century Mod Curve Quilt with Carole Lyles Shaw Tuesday, April 7, 2020, 9:00-4:00 Manatee Humane Soci-ety Clinic, 2415 14th St. W., Bradenton. Learn several techniques for improvisational cutting and piecing and make a runner or placemats or a crib– or lap-size quilt!

Drunkard’s Path Combo Class with Carol Henry, March 3, 2020, 9:00-4:00 Manatee Humane Society Clinic, 2415 14th St. W., Bradenton. Design and make a minia-ture or full-size Drunkard’s Path on your machine! There is a class fee of $9.00 for acrylic templates.

Local Guild Websites Cathy Lane

The Friendship Knot Quilters Guild website is probably a favorite on your computer already – https://friendshipknotquilters.com Visit it often to keep up with all of the latest pictures, reports, and events. It’s fun to look at old reports – take a minute to read the quilt show news from all of our shows since 2013. We’ve been busy! Our sister quilt guilds have websites that are interesting, informative, and inspiring. Spend some time looking at what they’re doing. Of course the pictures of quilts are the best part.

Youth Sewing Project Elva Farrell

The youth sewing group, members of the Green and Me 4-H Club, had their first class on Janu-

ary 22. There are eight participants, all 9, 10 & 11 years old. The first class was getting to know the

sewing machine (only two had ever used a machine). It is a happy and enthusiastic, fun group to work

with. They were excited about the fabrics that were donated at the guild meeting and are anxious to

start on ‘real’ projects. Thanks to the many members who donated fabrics.

There is still time to volunteer if anyone would like to help. The meetings are every Wednes-

day (for five more weeks) from 10:45-noon. Meetings are held at Suncoast School for Innovative

Studies located at 845 S. School Ave. If you are able to help at one or more of the meetings please

contact me.

Quilts in Paradise: Fabric and Fiber Unleashed

Katie Metheny and Jann Warfield, Co-Chairs

Newsflash! Jann Warfield has joined Katie as Co-chair for the quilt Show. This is very wel-come and exciting as Jann is an organized and positive leader. We are ready to have as much fun as we can with our 2021 quilt show.

Have you started your quilt to enter the show, yet? Well, get busy. We can’t wait to see your beautiful quilt entry.

Donor Quilt

Denise Collado and Elva Farrell

And the challenge has begun. Can we meet our goal of 10,000 tickets? We are off to a good

start. Thirty-four members checked out 996 tickets. To keep up this momentum we need every mem-

ber’s help. Pick up tickets at any guild meeting or contact Denise or Elva if you aren’t able to get to a

meeting. Hopefully our snowbird members will take tickets back north and spread the word about our

show, and our beautiful quilt. You can also help by suggesting locations where we might set up the

quilt and sell tickets. And, when we have a venue we will need volunteers to help with the ticket sales.

2021 Small Quilt Silent Auction

Cass Bowen, Helen Lucas and Trish Bobeck Thanks to Ellen Simon, we have our first small quilt for the auction for the quilt show next March. I have not even started to beg yet! She has set the bar pretty high as the quilt is spectacular.

Just to refresh your memories, our goal is to have at least 100 quilts – 50 for each day of the show. Quilts can be appliquéd, pieced, or paper-pieced. Total perimeter should not exceed 80 inches. They can be square, rectangular or round – you decide. There is no minimum perimeter measurement. The quilt should have a sleeve or some type of hanger on the back. Please label your quilt or pin your name on the back. Hopefully we will sell them all but if not, they will be returned to the maker. Since we no longer have a boutique for you to display your handmade items, this is your chance to make something special for the quilt show. Please turn them in to me, Helen or Trish at any of the future meetings and call us with any questions you might have.

Block Auction Karen Clark, Tommy Fitzsimmons, Lynn Purple, Linda Swanson

Blocks, we need blocks for the Block Auction. Please put needle to fabric and start making sets of blocks, enough for a quilt. This is a great project for Cottage Groups.

Door Prizes Sue Balazs

Please donate for the Door Prizes. A box will be at each Guild meeting. Thank you for your donation.
