PLENARY INDULGENCE DURING THE YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE!

On the occasion of this special Year, Pope Francis has conceded plenary indulgences, under the customary conditions: the individual be in the state of grace by the completion of the acts, have complete detachment from sin, and pray for the Pope’s intentions. The person must also sacramentally confess their sins and receive Communion, up to about twenty days before or after the indulgenced act.

The period for gaining this indulgence began on the First Sunday of Advent 2014 and will conclude on February 2, 2016, the day of the closure of the Year of Consecrated Life. In the Diocese of Lafayette a plenary indulgence may be obtained during those days devoted to consecrated life and during diocesan celebrations organized for the Year of Consecrated Life (by participating in any Votive Mass for Consecrated or Religious Life, Vocations Awareness, Jubilarian Mass, etc) or by visiting any of the following designated places:

• Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Lafayette• Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Lafayette• Saint Charles Borromeo Church, Grand Coteau• Saint Martin de Tours, St. Martinville• Mother of the Redeemer Monastery, * Plaisance• Carmelite Monastery, * Lafayette• Mater Dolorosa Chapel, *St. Martinville

In order to obtain the plenary indulgence, one must publicly recite the Liturgy of the Hours (please note places that are marked with an asterisk all have public recitation of the Divine Office; please contact them for times) or devote a suitable period of time for devout reflection, concluding with the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and pious invocation of the Virgin Mary.

PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFEO God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen

Dear Parishioners of Sacred Heart,

It seems just like yesterday when I showed up here at Sacred Heart to take over as Parochial Vicar for Fr. Garrett MacIntyre in July of 2013. But now, my time here at Sacred Heart is coming to an end. These past two years, which have also been the first two years in which I have shared in the priesthood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, have been filled with many graces. For all of them, I thank the Lord for His tremendous goodness.

I, in a very special way, want to thank Fr. Jason Vidrine for being such a fantastic mentor and guide for me during the bulk of my time here at Sacred Heart. He is such a special and faithful priest. I feel very fortunate that I was able to spend my first two years as a priest learning from such a wonderful example.

I also want to thank all of you dear parishioners here at Sacred Heart who have been so supportive and understanding with this new baby priest. I will miss you. Please remember me in your prayers. I assure you that you will always be in my prayers. As a sign of my prayers for you and thanks to a few anonymous and generous parishioners, I am having attached to one of the outside nodes of my chalice a medallion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Know that it will serve as a reminder to me to pray for you so that every time I lift it up with Our Lord’s precious blood, I will be lifting all of you up in prayer as well. I love you all. If you are ever in Abbeville, do not hesitate to call me up at St. Mary Magdalene and we can go get some oysters and/or crabs!

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Fr. Brian Harrington

INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE:

• Universal: That immigrants and refugees may find welcome and respect in the countries to which they come.

• Evangelization: That the personal encounter with Jesus may arouse in many young people the desire to offer their own lives in priesthood or consecrated life.
