THOUGHTS from FR. GREG Before heading into the desert, Jesus was first strengthened and prepared by His heavenly Father. He had just been baptized in the Jordan River by His cousin, John the Baptist. During the baptism God the Father spoke saying, “This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.” Wow! Could any of us want more affirmation than that? And then Jesus entered into the desert. The devil, our enemy, wants to steal our joy and our peace. So how does he attack Jesus? “If you are the Son of God…” Twice he challenges Jesus in this way, trying to cast doubt upon Jesus’ relationship with His Father. The devil is not very creative or original. This is the same tactic he used against Adam and Eve. “Did God really tell you not to eat… You certainly will not die! No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods.” In other words: You can’t trust God. He doesn’t want what’s best for you. You have to seize for yourself all that you need. God won’t give it to you. The devil is always attacking and seeking to undermine our relationship with our Father, destroy our trust and by doing so steal our joy and peace. Adam and Eve grasped at what belonged to God and fell into sin and darkness.
Why did God allow Jesus to be tested in this way? Why does God allow us to be tested? From the very beginning, God has been asking mankind this question, “Do you trust me?” It is our times of temptation that really allow us to answer. Jesus shows us how we are to respond to our Father. “Though He was in the form of God, Jesus did not deem equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, He emptied Himself and took the form of a slave… humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross! Because of this, God highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name above every other name, so that at Jesus’ name every knee must bend and every tongue proclaim to the glory of God the Father, JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!” (Philippians 2:5–11)
Every Lent, we are asked to do penances in order to learn how to stop grasping for what we need. When we deny ourselves and take up our cross, we learn to rely on God, trusting in His providence. “Surrender to God, and he will do everything for you.”

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
A Lenten Reflection By Kathy McGovern, “The Story And You”
I have an idea for you this Lent, and I got it from Jesus.
Jesus must have known, from an early age, that Satan had his eyes on Him. He must have known that the powers of hell would lay in wait for Him, and so Jesus filled His memory and soul with scripture. He made sure that the scriptures were on His lips and His heart. (Deuteronomy 30:14) He may even have worn sections of scripture around His left wrist and on His forehead when He prayed. (Deuteronomy 6:8)
That’s how, when the liar accosted Him in the desert, Jesus was ready for Him. Turn these stones to bread? We don’t live on bread alone. Throw yourself down to show that you’re God? You shall not put God to the test. Bow down and worship me? The Lord alone shall you worship.
Are you ready for the temptations of this Lent? Keep your favorite scriptures in your heart. Or maybe you have some favorite hymns you want to memorize so you have them when you need God’s consolation. On long-distance trips, my husband tapes the words to hymns on the steering wheel of his car and works on memorizing them as he drives.
Resisting Temptation
In our Gospel reading today, Jesus is tempted by the devil to turn away from God and to desire the earthly pleasures of wealth and power. While Jesus is able to turn away from that temptation, oftentimes we give in to that desire and sin against the goodness of God.
Through these 40 days of Lent, let us look closely at our lives to see where we need to be more faithful to what is good in our lives and concentrate on how to increase the goodness God has put in our hearts.
Here are a few of my favorite scriptures, which I have on speed-dial every Lent:
“I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
“Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; character, hope.” (Romans 5:3–5)
“I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord – plans of welfare, not of woe.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
“If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your heart.” (Hebrews 3:15)

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
A Lenten Reflection By Kathy McGovern, “The Story And You”
I have an idea for you this Lent, and I got it from Jesus.
Jesus must have known, from an early age, that Satan had his eyes on Him. He must have known that the powers of hell would lay in wait for Him, and so Jesus filled His memory and soul with scripture. He made sure that the scriptures were on His lips and His heart. (Deuteronomy 30:14) He may even have worn sections of scripture around His left wrist and on His forehead when He prayed. (Deuteronomy 6:8)
That’s how, when the liar accosted Him in the desert, Jesus was ready for Him. Turn these stones to bread? We don’t live on bread alone. Throw yourself down to show that you’re God? You shall not put God to the test. Bow down and worship me? The Lord alone shall you worship.
Are you ready for the temptations of this Lent? Keep your favorite scriptures in your heart. Or maybe you have some favorite hymns you want to memorize so you have them when you need God’s consolation. On long-distance trips, my husband tapes the words to hymns on the steering wheel of his car and works on memorizing them as he drives.
Resisting Temptation
In our Gospel reading today, Jesus is tempted by the devil to turn away from God and to desire the earthly pleasures of wealth and power. While Jesus is able to turn away from that temptation, oftentimes we give in to that desire and sin against the goodness of God.
Through these 40 days of Lent, let us look closely at our lives to see where we need to be more faithful to what is good in our lives and concentrate on how to increase the goodness God has put in our hearts.
Here are a few of my favorite scriptures, which I have on speed-dial every Lent:
“I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
“Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; character, hope.” (Romans 5:3–5)
“I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord – plans of welfare, not of woe.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
“If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your heart.” (Hebrews 3:15)

“Come Sing a Joyful Song” with Caritas
The Caritas choir, which sings at 10:30am Mass, is preparing choral music for Lent, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Interested singers can sit in on a rehearsal any Wednesday (from 7:00–8:30pm) and experience our fellowship and music-making. High school students and up are welcome! If you have sung in a choir before, that is a bonus but is not necessary to join.
