Alumni Spotlight

Lancaster Catholic High School inducted Katie Hayek ‘02 and Ryan Purvis ‘04 to the Lancaster Catholic High School Athletic Hall of Honor on January 15 during a reception in the Old Main Gymnasium.

Both thanked coaches, family members and other LCHS staff during their acceptance speeches.

During his time as a Crusader, Purvis earned seven varsity letters in two sports: football (three) and basketball (four).

Purvis was a three season Section Three All Star tight end and punter; in his final season at LCHS, he was also named a Section Three All Star defensive end. He was the team’s co-captain for the ‘03-’04 season and was named PIAA AA First Team All State Tight End. He racked up stats with 39 receptions for 755 yards, four receiving touchdowns and two passing touchdowns in his senior year.

At LCHS, Purvis was also on fire on the court as the starting center for the 2003 PIAA State Championship Basketball Team, which boasted an undefeated 35-0 season. He is a member of the 1,000 points scored club, collecting 1,395 points and 800 rebounds. Purvis was a Section III All Star his junior and senior seasons and named to the L-L League All League Team for his 2004 senior year season.

Purvis went on to Boston College on a football scholar-ship, where he was a three year letter winner and a two year starter at tight end. His performance on the field named him 1st Team All Atlantic Coast Conference All Star as a junior and 2nd Team All Atlantic Coast Confer-ence All Star as a senior, but he said nothing could com-pare to his time at Catholic High.

“I had an incredible journey from CYO Basketball to making an NFL roster and playing with Hall of Fame players,” said Purvis, “But nothing can compare to the foundation that I built here at Lancaster Catholic and the

start that Catholic High provided for my life.”

Throughout her athletic career at LCHS, Hayek received seven varsity letters in two sports: soccer (three) and basketball (four).

Hayek lettered and started for three soccer seasons as midfielder, but her true talents were found on the basketball court. She started as a guard all four years on the Girl’s Basketball team. At the conclusion of her career at LCHS, Hayek had scored 1,510 points and during her final season she averaged 23 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals per game!

As team captain in her senior year, Hayek led her team to Section III, L-L League and PIAA District Three AAA Championships. She was then named Section III All Star, L-L League All Star and L-L League Player of the Year. Hayek also earned spots on the PIAA District III AAA All Star Team and was named to the 2nd Team PA Girls Big School All State Team by the Associated Press.

Hayek received a basketball scholarship to the Univer-sity of Miami, where she was a four year letter win-ner and was recognized at graduation by University President, Donna Shalala, as the Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year due to her academic, athletic, leadership and community service contributions to the university.

Hayek, who has overcome cancer numerous times in her career, delivered a heart-felt emotional speech as she talked about her life at LCHS and beyond.

“Mr. Hamer said it best when he said that you learn so much through athletics,” said Hayek. “I learned time management, leadership, teamwork and the importance of commitment and discipline, things I credit Catholic High instilling in me that allowed me to be successful at Miami and beyond.”

Student Spotlight

The 2015 Lancaster Catholic Yearbook, known as the Rosmarian, placed first in the American Scholastic Press Association’s Annual Contest/Review for Scholastic Yearbooks, Magazines and Newspapers.

The Rosmarian, a long standing tradition at LCHS, featuring photos, student written articles and memories of Lancaster Catholic students earned a first place prize in a national contest for “Blink”, the 2015 yearbook.

The contest, sponsored by the American Scholastic Press Association, is scored on a point system and judged by educators who are also faculty advisers for scholastic publications and LCHS was selected for first prize, among 182 other schools nationwide.

Lancaster Catholic’s Rosmarian is student-produced and overseen by faculty advisor, Mrs. Rebecca Harvey, who said, “This achievement is so significant to our staff because it acknowledges their diligent efforts to produce a meaningful yearbook that they can be proud for many years to come.”

A copy of the 2016 Rosmarian yearbook can be ordered by logging into www.yearbookordercenter.com and entering the LCHS school code: 4248.

LCHS Senior Julia Cao will compete in the Poetry Out Loud regional contest in Gettysburg on Tuesday, February 2. This is Cao’s second consecutive year to compete at the regional level.

Cao has selected three poems for the competition:“Beautiful Wrckage,” about the Vietnam War from the perspective of an American soldier, “The Paradox,” about the African American experience by famous writer Paul Laurence Dunbar and “Monet Refuses the Operation,” based on a real event involving the artist Monet who initially refused to have an eye surgery because he preferred to paint the halos that it caused him to see.

Student SpotlightWish, a Children’s Christmas Musical, Becomes a Bridge of Love Fulfilling Wishes of 82 Children

How did 27 child performers help fulfill the wish lists of 82 children in need this past Christmas? “By just doing what we love,” said 14 year-old Erin Mary Lynch, a freshman at Lancaster Catholic High School and one of the performers in the show. Lynch, who has performed at Dutch Apple, Sight and Sound, American Music Theatre, Prima, Susquehanna Stage Company and EPAC, has been singing since she could talk and dancing since she could walk. Her first role was as the little girl in Holly Jolly Christmas at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre; she was 8. On Sunday, December 20, Lynch was back on the Dutch Apple stage in Wish, where she sang and danced in a variety of choreographed routines that made up the show. When asked her favorite part of the show, Erin Mary Lynch noted the tap routine when toy soldiers come to life and the nativity scene where she holds the lighted star above the manger as the children sing Oh Little Town of Bethlehem. Lynch sang that as a duet with 17 year-old Hope Abrom, a senior at Hempfield High School, and one of three artistic directors behind the show.

Wish is produced by Mychal’s Message, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to meet the needs of the homeless and poor. “This project is unlike others,” said Lynch’s mother, Kelly Ann Lynch, co-founder of Mychal’s Message. “We’re always looking for creative ways to share Mychal’s Message with others,” she said, “and because our ministry is driven by the Holy Spirit, we try to listen and say ‘yes.’” Mychal’s Message, referring to the message and legacy of family friend, Father Mychal Judge, is simply “to love,” noting the inspiration for the ministry. “Father Mychal loved without boundaries,” Kelly Ann Lynch said, “He was a bridge for others, a bridge of love.” Judge, who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, was a Franciscan priest who had a special love for the homeless and poor.

Wish was a collaborative effort and owes its success to the community including Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, Millersville University’s Costume Shop, Encore Dance Center, the Lancaster Homeless Student Project, Bob Evans Restaurant, M. Scott Oatman, Art Printing, Santa Claus – and the 27 children who also said, ‘yes’

to becoming that bridge of love at Christmas. The Wish Production Team – Hope Abrom, Laurel Murr and Christopher Lynch, all seniors at Hempfield High School – selected the cast, chose all the music including group numbers and solos, created original choreography and the story. “It’s about people helping people,” Kelly Ann Lynch said, “and children helping children.” With the help of the Homeless Student Project of Lancaster, Mychal’s Message gathered the wish lists of 82 children. “Footballs and Monster High dolls were on that list,” Kelly Ann Lynch said, “But the sweetest wish was the one of the child who asked for a pink sweater for his mother.” That wish, of course, came true for that child on Christmas.

Erin Mary Lynch, whose own wish list includes ‘the gift of time’ knows the true meaning of Christmas. After all, she’s been on breadlines and in soup kitchens all her life. Her mother notes her first trip to New York City when the family distributed socks to the homeless. Erin Mary was just shy of her first birthday. The following year, she was bundled up in a snowsuit at the age of 2, giving warm gloves to men on a breadline. “She wanted to give the gloves directly to the men,” said Kelly Ann Lynch. “It was just a part of who she was and who she was going to become.”

Christmas deliveries took place on the morning of Christmas Eve when the Wish families will gathered to pick up a boxed dinner and a bag of presents to deliver to the families in need. “They’ll all became that bridge,” Kelly Ann Lynch said, “as they brought Christmas to others.”

Freshmen in Anne Bleistine’s science classes recently participated in the Think! Energy with E-Power Innovation Challenge.

The program teaches the importance of energy, natural resources and environmental issues through an interactive, hands-on presentation as well as a take-home energy efficiency kit. Students also completed an energy audit with their families indicating what energy-efficient changes they made to their households.

Following the program, students participated in the Think! Energy Innovation Challenge. After discussing the energy audits, teams were tasked with exploring innovative ways to make a difference in energy and/or water efficiency. Students then communicated their ideas in a variety of formats.

This year 65 area students participated in the contest; 34 qualifying entrants were from Mrs. Bleistine’s classes. She received a solar messenger bag for having the most qualifying students in the competition.

The following students were recognized for their outstanding efforts:

Claire Buczacki and Natalie Brislin received an Honorable Mention for their short movie. They received certificates and USB drives.

Kaite Graybill and Madelyn Nolt received solar backpacks for their short movie.

Gloria Cao and Michael Brenzia received solar backpacks for their keynote presentation.

Entries were judged on theme, originality and creativity, and impact.

The contest is sponsored by the National Energy Foundation, and locally by PPL and the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
