REMINDERS ON THE CHURCH’S TEACHING
HOW TO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION
IN THE HANDS—PART 1
Fr. Michael Harkins
O UR LORD JESUS CHRIST instituted the Church as the universal sacrament of salvation and within the Church the seven
sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. He entrusted their celebration to the Church to oversee their celebration and to preserve the proper reverence due to them.
The Church exercises its responsible custody especially of the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist in many ways. In a great many places throughout the world, in addition to the ordinary ministers of the Eucharist (bishops, priests and deacons), extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion (selected and specially trained religious or lay persons) are also authorized to distribute Holy Communion.
We begin with the first steps provided by the Church for receiving Holy Communion in the hands. These instructions are followed, except in case of physical handicap or danger of injury.
1. Step up to the minister (ordinary or extraordi-nary), place your hands (BOTH OF THEM!) in front of you with one open palm over the
other.
2. Bow your head slightly in front of the minister. (This is the reverence approved by the Church. Do not genuflect or bow at the waist.)
