Message from Fr. Brad

St. Simon the Apostle Second Sunday of Advent December 6, 2020

Sunday Readings — December 6, 2020 Second Sunday of Advent

R 1 IS 40:1-5, 9-11 Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins. A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; the rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. Go up on to a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings; cry out at the top of your voice, Jerusalem, herald of good news! Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah: Here is your God! Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by his strong arm; here is his reward with him, his recompense before him. Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care. RESPONSORIAL PSALM 11AM PS85: Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation R 2 2 PT 3:8-14 Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard “delay,” but he is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out. Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. But according to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace.

Dear Parishioners of St. Simon, As I write this column, I have been in quarantine due to testing positive for Covid-19 just before Thanksgiving. I received the test out of an abundance of caution after developing some symptoms that are similar to a head cold. I wanted to let you know that I am doing ok! My symptoms have been fairly mild – head cold congestion, but no fever and just an occasional cough. I am very grateful that my symptoms have not been severe, like many victims of this pandemic have had to deal with! Fr. Maes and Fr. Santen have been in quarantine with me, and they have not developed any symptoms. THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR PRAYERS AND MESSAGES OF SUPPORT! We hope to re-open the parish office and begin our normal Mass schedule again on Wednesday, December 9th. Please check our parish website and Facebook page for current updates and other announcements. Please continue to make decisions to stay safe during this pandemic! Have a healthy and holy week! St. Simon the Apostle pray for us! Sincerely, Fr. Brad

G MK 1:1-8 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States of America, second typical edition © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Inc., Washington, DC. A SUCCESSFUL COAT & BLANKET DRIVE THANK YOU St. Simon parishioners! Our recent Coat & Blanket Drive collected 586 coats, blankets, hats, scarves, mittens & gloves. These donations will help to keep our brothers and sisters in Christ warm this winter season. The St. Vincent de Paul conference took your donations to Immaculate Conception Parish in Park Hills. Their SVDP conference gave the coats and blankets to their Neighbors in Need. Thank you for helping us to help others.

St. Vincent De Paul Society:

December 6—Second Sunday of Advent: In today’s Gospel John the Baptist urges us to “Prepare the way of the Lord.”. We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul right here in this Parish so that together we can help the suffering and poor to celebrate Christmas.

Knights of Columbus Giving Tree News, 2020

With the holiday season approaching, and as you begin your shopping, we ask for your help and generosity. The Knights of Columbus, thru our “Giving Tree” campaign, is once again partnering with the Carondelet Community Betterment Foundation and the Veteran’s Hospital at Jefferson Barracks to provide for those in need. Because of Covid 19 Virus restrictions, and to comply with Health and Safety Precautions, we will not be hanging ornaments on the tree this year, but are providing a list of needed items inserted in the bulletin and also listed on the St. Simon’s Flocknotes web page. Please select the items you wish to donate from that list. To Keep with social distancing guidelines, and avoid excessive handling of Donated Items, we will provide drive-by drop off service at the lower Church Hall during regular Mass times on the weekends of December 5/6 and December 12/13. Please note: All donations will leave St. Simon’s on December 13th. Thank you for your help and support! May you have a blessed and happy holiday season.
