PRAYING THE NEWS | AUGUST 2, 2020
“There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.”MATTHEW 14:16Dear Lord, you expect inclusion and generosity from us – insisting that the need of another is our need too. With COVID19 continuing to spread, may regions and nations work together rather than competing for critical equipment, medication or doses of future vaccine. Please grant wisdom and compassion in directing help and supplies where they are needed most and will be most effective to bring the pandemic to an end. Jesus, we trust in you. Amen.

GOOD NEWS REFLECTION
Pray: Praised be to You, Lord, because Your love wants to work wonders through our faith in You. Thank You for Your merciful power that restores us in body, soul and spirit. Amen.
Are you dissatisfied with anyone? The readings for this Sunday make me thirsty and hungry! Can we go out to dinner after Mass?
As we say in the responsorial Psalm, "The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs." Yet, despite knowing this, we think we never have enough. We are not content with what we have.
Even when things go well, we're not fully satisfied. We want more. Especially in relationships. We feeling like we're starving for more affection. We crave more attention. Our guts grumble over not getting enough concern and support and approval from those who should give it to us.
Every person in our lives has been called by God to be a provider of his love and concern for us. But no one loves us fully and perfectly, and some totally reject this calling. If because of this we live in a state of frustration and anger or cynicism or self-protective isolationism, we're always hungry.
When we choose instead to forgive the imperfect people and turn to Jesus, he miraculously multiplies a little into a lot. By keeping our eyes on Jesus rather than on those who fail to love us fully, his love for us fills our hearts to overflowing.
Feeling dissatisfied is a sign that Jesus is trying to get our attention; there's something he wants to give us that we're not yet open to receive. Our problem is: How is Jesus going to give us what we need if we can't see him and feel touched by him?
To feel satisfied by an invisible God, we have to stay closely connected to him in prayer and in the Christian community that he's given us. We have to pay attention to what he's doing and through whom he's chosen to do it. That means getting more involved and expecting the unexpected!
Questions for Personal Reflection: What are you hungry for? Who's not giving you enough of what you need? How can you find other ways of receiving this, with the help of God?
Questions for Community Faith Sharing: Describe a time when God met your needs in an unexpected way. Who did you expect to get it from, and how did it happen that you received it another way? Did you receive more — or less — than what you had wanted? Was it satisfying?

COVID-19 UPDATE (7/28/20)
This is an updated announcement regarding the temporary closure of our parish, due to one of our priests testing positive for COVID-19. This update reflects consultation with both medical and archdiocesan authorities. Our 3 priests are in quarantine through Friday, August 7.• Fr. Drew and Fr. Jaison remain symptom-free, but are quarantined at the rectory. Both were
tested today for COVID-19.• Fr. Truong Son, who is still asymptomatic, is in isolation at a location away from the rectory.
He will remain in isolation until he receives two negative tests taken 24 hours apart.• Fr. Truong Son had no reason to expect he would test positive. He was tested out of
extreme caution and in obedience to a recommendation from the archdiocese that anyone in attendance at the July 10 ordination at the Co-Cathedral be tested, since one priest in the pews tested positive after the event.
All Sunday and daily Masses are canceled through Friday, August 7.• The Vigil Mass will NOT be recorded and posted this Saturday, since our priests are in
quarantine.• Sunday Masses will resume on Saturday, August 8, at 5 pm, and Sunday, August 9, at 9 am, 1
pm and 5 pm.• Daily Masses will resume on Monday, August 10, at Noon (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday &
Friday) and 6:30 pm Wednesday. The parish offices are closed until Monday, August 10.• No staff members are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.• Staff members who have had close contact with Fr. Truong Son are being tested and will
remain in quarantine until getting a negative test result.Who should be tested?• Close contact is defined as being within 6-feet of a COVID-positive person for a period
longer than 5 minutes – and particularly if either person was not wearing a face mask.• Note, this follows the archdiocesan guideline. (Updated CDC guidelines recommend being
tested if you have had close contact with a COVID-positive person for 15 minutes or longer.)• However, if you are anxious or insecure about exposure to COVID-19, please monitor your
symptoms, and to be safe, consider getting tested for COVID-19.Continue to look for parish updates via Flocknote and please pray for our priests and everyone impacted by COVID-19. Stay well, everyone!
FAITH FORMATION PLAN FOR FALL 2020
Go to stlaurence.org/registration for a summary of the Faith Formation plan for this upcoming year and details regarding the first six weeks of Fall 2020.HOME STUDY As always, we offer a Home Study program for every grade level beginning with PreK3 thru Grade 12. If you are concerned about having your children on campus, this might be your best choice, plus you can progress at your own pace throughout the year.CCE (PRE-K &ELEMENTARY) We are offering a flexible program for PreK thru Grade 5, that will begin at home for the first quarter and hopefully transition on campus when it is safe to do so. The lessons are easy and allow parents to talk with children in multiple grade levels at the same time for a family conversation.EDGE AND LIFE TEEN Youth in middle school and high school will begin with remote, interactive EDGE, Life Teen and Confirmation Prep sessions for the first quarter and will return to campus when it is safe to do so. Youth are assigned to a small support group. They join a video meeting with their small group, watch a short pre-recorded talk together, then have a discussion about the topic.VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Small groups led by adult Core Team members encourage and support our youth as they deal with the isolation and stress of home-based learning. Please consider volunteering to join the Core Team since our need is greater now more than ever to minister to the youth of the parish. Please contact Mo Bass for EDGE and Mike Cleary for Life Teen/Confirmation at 281-265-5774.REGISTER NOW Please register online at stlaurence.org/registration. The deadline to register for First Sacraments (First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion) and Confirmation Prep is September 1. Once you register, you will receive an email with details about book distribution and start dates. All programs will begin mid-September. Please prayerfully consider which option meets the needs of your family and sign up today.
