report to the community 2010Catholic Charities CYOSan Francisco, San Mateo & Marin
catholic charities cyo
As I continue in ministry as the Archbishop of San Francisco, I am grateful for this opportunity to commend your ongoing generosity and compassion for the poor, as we slowly see signs of an improving economy.
Catholic Charities CYO has responded for more than 100 years with compassion to our neighbors in need, poor and working poor families, aging and disabled adults and youth. Today’s needs differ from those of a century ago, but are just as compelling. You responded to the Gospel values of charity and justice with your volunteer and financial support and for this, I thank you.
Each day we open our doors to many people. The care and concern from the CCCYO staff is evident when we counsel a young family in crisis, aid a frail senior and provide youth with opportunities for healthy growth in mind, body and spirit. And, as you know from daily reports, because of cuts in government support and difficulties in the job market, the need for the services provided by CCCYO continues. Individuals and families who have never needed a helping hand before are asking for help to provide for basic necessities. The young single mother, the frail grandfather and the teen come to us for compassion and all are treated with dignity and respect. And with God’s grace and your support we will continue to offer them assistance, hope and care.
In April, we welcomed Loaves & Fishes Honoree Immaculée Ilibagiza, whose message of forgiveness and hope was so welcome in these challenging times. She reflected on the many helping hands who eased her difficult journey, hands like those of our case managers at Catholic Charities CYO.
Dear Friends in Christ,
2010 report to the community • 3
My heartfelt thanks go out to each donor who offered us a hand at Catholic Charities CYO this year. Please know of my gratitude to the immediate past president of the CCCYO Board of Trustees, Cecilia Herbert, the staff and volunteers and to those who carry out the mission of serving that poor father and mother, that frail senior and the young person who wants to live a healthier life in a safer place. May God continue to bless each of you in this loving ministry of charity.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend George Niederauer Archbishop of San Francisco
catholic charities cyo
Almost eleven years ago, I was welcomed onto the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities CYO. This year, I am honored to be writing to you as the new Board President. Much has changed over the years and we at Catholic Charities CYO continue to adapt our programs to meet the changing needs of the people we serve in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties: the family who needs after school care so the parents can go to work and provide for their children, the aging adult and his caregivers who need safe adult day support and respite, the newly arrived mother who is learning English, the client who is living with HIV with the help of our case managers, and the young camper and young athlete who attend CYO Camp and play CYO sports each year.
You, who have responded to our requests for support during this difficult economic downturn, have been our partner in supporting, sta-bilizing and strengthening these individuals and families. The people whose names are listed in this annual report have donated to our Annual Fund, to specific programs through Memorials and Honorary giving, through our Legacy Circle, or through the monthly Circle of Angels pledge program. Hundreds more have supported and attended our exciting annual events – the Vincenzo Wine Tasting & Auction, CYO Golf Day, and of course the annual Loaves & Fishes Dinner, which honors extraordinary service and philanthropy. We recognize that many of you have continued your support while experiencing yourselves some of the effects of this challenging economic environment. For your support, and for the cheerful involvement of hundreds of volunteers without whom these events could not take place, I most gratefully thank you.
I want to thank Archbishop George Niederauer, our board chair, for his strong support of our work. I also want to thank Cecilia Herbert, our immediate past president, for her tireless dedication during her 3-½ year term. I’m delighted that Cecilia is continuing on the board to assist us as we move forward. I also wish to recognize the chairs of the various board committees and events that brought our community together in support of our services: Program and Services Committee, Tim Rea; Finance Committee, Nanette Miller; Development Committee, Nick Andrade; Governance Committee, Rev. Charles Gagan, S.J.; Audit Committee, Timothy Alan

Simon; Loaves & Fishes Dinner, Maureen Sullivan and her husband, Craig; Vincenzo Wine Tasting & Auction, Jeff Fenton and Heather Rodriguez; CYO Golf Day, Jim McCabe and Stephen Molinelli; and CYO Hall of Fame Dinner, Mary Schembri, Steve Tarantino and Peggy Youngblood.
I also want to recognize our amazing staff and volunteers, who do the day-to-day work with our clients and truly change lives. They have risen to the challenges presented by the economy to ensure that all of our resources are directed efficiently on behalf of the people we serve.
We are also grateful for our partnerships with our parishes as we work together to meet the needs of our community.
All of our work here at Catholic Charities CYO is changing lives for the better, and by your support and contributions, you have helped to make that possible. I invite you to be inspired by the outpouring of generosity during difficult times that is listed on these pages as we continue, neighbor helping neighbor, making life better in the Bay Area.
Sincerely,
Deborah Dasovich President, Board of Directors

Providing quality child care and youth enrichment services is vital to Catholic Charities CYO’s goal of supporting, stabilizing and strengthening families in our community. In January 2010, we deepened our support for low income families at Treasure Island with our new Treasure Island Child Development Center.
Catholic Charities CYO’s Treasure Island Child Development Center provides family support and full-time childcare in its infant, toddler and preschool programs to the Treasure Island community. Many of these families are currently supported through our Treasure Island Supportive Housing program. The child development center is cur-rently serving 54 infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
Treasure Island Child Development Center offers play-based experi-ential learning, providing unique opportunities in expressive arts and natural sciences. Children enjoy a well-rounded, stimulating experi-ence, which will prepare them for engaged learning through elemen-tary school and beyond.
This combination of integrating child development services with permanent supportive housing is a model for how to more effectively support a family’s path to self sufficiency.

Catholic Charities CYO continues to build strong communities with new fam-ily and youth programming. For over 100 years, Catholic Charities CYO has been serv-ing families and children through out-of-school care, child development programs, foster care, supportive housing, case management and counseling. Continuing in this tradition, the agency opened its doors to the residential community at Mercy Housing’s 10th & Mission Family Housing.
Our 10th & Mission Support Services and the Youth & Family Programming are part of a wrap-around style of case management that is offered through the 10th & Mission community.
As families moved into their new residences in September 2009, Catholic Charities CYO imme-diately began case management to support families through new opportunities including edu-cational growth and development. The Youth Center, which opened in early 2010, is equipped with indoor and outdoor space for safe, supervised and appropriate out-of-school program-ming with emphasis on homework assistance, tutoring options, nutritious snacks, recreation and enrichment activities. The program is designed to meet the needs of all children and youth, with particular emphasis on those from low income or at-risk backgrounds. In May 2009, Catholic Charities CYO added a food pantry, in collaboration with the San Francisco Food Bank.
Our extensive support and commitment to help is akin to wrapping our arms around the families, children and individuals we serve. The powerful combination of affordable housing, accessible childcare, case management and family support services delivered at a single site is a model for how the integration and concentration of resources can change lives while marking the promise of a better future.

Catholic Charities CYO serves as a major link in the HIV continuum of care through education, counseling, housing and support. Rita da Cascia, the agency’s Special Project of National Significance program for women and children struggling with chronic illness, drug abuse and mental illness, took over management of Hazel Betsey this past year.
Hazel Betsey is a nine unit shelter plus care housing facility for women and families with chronic illness located in San Francisco’s Mission District. CCCYO provides intensive medical case manage-ment on-site for residents focused on family stabilization of health, medical, legal, financial, educational, psycho-social and housing needs. Rita da Cascia case management staff provides transporta-tion to medical care appointments throughout San Francisco. The Hazel Betsey residents have monthly access to an on-site food pantry. There is also a community room, kitchen and garden that residents use regularly. Activity opportunities are offered to support improved health, socialization and daily living skill development.

The impact of an entire community supporting one another is profound. Your service to those in need through the good work of Catholic Charities CYO changes the lives of thousands of families each and every day. It is with gratitude that we acknowledge your significant contributions and share with you how your help is making a difference for the people we serve.
The faces of the people we serve reflect the depth of need as well as the curative powers of hope and compassion. Whether we are aid-ing an individual or an entire family, we help people where they are, as they are; demonstrating God’s love through the work that we do, work that your generosity makes possible.
Without question, the effects of the struggling economy are still very much a challenge. As the demand for our services has continued to increase, we have leveraged your support to expand our reach and amplify its impact.
As our neighbors were losing jobs and facing eviction, we increased the number of families that we helped to stay in their homes. As the number of homeless families seeking shelter and permanent housing grew, we partnered with Mercy Housing to provide 136 families with an apartment and the support they need to move toward self sufficiency. When the families we serve on San Francisco’s Treasure Island were in danger of losing their child care center, we partnered with local government and can now serve up to 75 families at our Treasure Island Child Development Center. As parents in the Canal district of San Rafael struggled to both work and care for their children, we expanded enrollment in our after school Kid’s Club program. And, as families in San Mateo County faced the anxiety and stress of coping with job loss, aging spouses and parents, serious illness and marital strife, we responded with counseling, adult day services and support for refugees and immigrants. Please know that your individual acts of generosity made all of this possible.
Catholic Charities CYO offers so much more than a bed for a night or a meal for a day. We offer families a path to self sufficiency. This year, I had the pleasure of meeting the Pasene Family who we support at Mercy Housing’s new 10th & Mission Residential
Dear Friends,
2010 report to the community • 23
Community. The family was homeless and in crisis when they first came to Catholic Charities CYO’s St. Joseph’s Family Center. Today, in addition to living in a brand new apartment, both parents are working and their two children are in childcare. This family – who came from a life full of chal-lenges – is well on the way to becoming sustainable, living their lives with dignity and providing a safe and healthy environment for their children.
The services we provide – thanks to your generous support – have given our most vulnerable neighbors the tools they need to envision a positive future for themselves and their children, and have empowered them to accept the responsibility that comes with being part of a community
On behalf of the people we serve who rely on us for housing, health care, nutrition, case management, child care, youth development activities and senior services, thank you for making our work possible. It is because of your support that we are able to continue our 100-year tradition of caring.
Sincerely and with gratitude,
Jeff Bialik Executive Director

CYO Athletics is not just about the final score. It’s about positive coaching, sports-manship for children and their parents, learning to live together in a diverse community, maximizing talents, and fostering the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual strength in each of us.
Last year, CYO Athletics extended its reach beyond out-of-school sports when it launched its first physical education program at St. Anthony Immaculate Conception School. When the school approached Catholic Charities CYO about their need for affordable, quality physical education programming, CYO Athletics developed a curriculum that is a perfect fit. The pro-gram meets the Catholic School, California State and National standards for physical educa-tion for grades K through 8.
Students experience a variety of traditional sports and are introduced to new activities with a curriculum ranging from football to yoga to dance. In addition, the physical education classes teach about healthy lifestyles and how the body’s muscles work. The program also included a partnership with Kids Cooking for Life, a non-profit organization that provides culinary pro-grams that introduce children to the joy and social dimensions of food preparation, dining, and education for living a healthy and productive life.
In September 2010, the physical education program will be introduced to Mission Dolores School. Catholic Charities CYO is pleased to expand our CYO Athletics programming to promote the Christian values of respect, love, compassion and support to the youth in our community.

Preventing homelessness is a significantly important aspect of Catholic Chari-ties CYO’s work. In October, Catholic Charities CYO received a $2.7 million federal stimulus fund grant to expand our efforts to prevent families from becoming homeless. The grant, which will be spent over three years, was awarded by the San Francisco Human Services Agency for provision of the San Francisco Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP), as part of an $8.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The CCCYO Housing Stabilization and Recovery Program (STAR) is designed to provide finan-cial assistance and services to either prevent individuals and families from becoming home-less or help those who are experiencing homelessness to be quickly re-housed and stabilized. Through Housing STAR, HPRP Assistance Funds provide rental subsidies, back rent, utility pay-ments, security deposits and/or moving cost assistance. CCCYO also offers information and referral for eviction prevention services.
Housing STAR serves families through this assistance program so that they may pursue opportuni-ties that may either increase their income or remove barriers to permanent affordable housing.
We are pleased to share the news that Housing STAR served 206 unduplicated families with over $555,000 in direct support from October 1, 2009 through August 13, 2010.
