Artist statementThe work I am currently creating is a mix of visual symbology and feelings attached to the images. I try to create a collage of senses and create a statement of feelings from the symbols I link together. I usually choose images that are dark, romantic, symbolic of dreamy feelings and daydreams, things found more in the imagination than in real life. I favor low brow and tattoo style combined with my educational experiences in graphic design surface design. I love texture and bold lines, grahic colors and strong statements.

Currently I am working on a collection of small and large scale paintings that are a mix of ink line with the coloring done in guache. The larger scale paintings are portraits of women surrounded by natural symbols such as roses, skulls, birds and trees. The smaller scale paintings focus more on a symbol with patterns and words that embellish on these images. I try to create dream like dark and sensual compositions that have the feel of a dream and the graphic image of an illustration.

My background is in graphic design and surface design. I graduated with a diploma in both from the College of Craft and Design in Fredericton New Brunswick, Canada. I took surface design because I love to paint and to create im-ages onto surfaces, fabric and paper. In this course I got the opportunity to learn silkscreening, paint techniques using guache that help to create depth, feeling and contrast using texture and color, how to create repeat patterns for wallpa-per and print, and how to design images for garments. I loved taking this course, it’s duration was for two years and it opened me up to a new world of design where I got to explore my personal style of design and also discover other artists in the world that where creating images and designs that I admire.

In graphic design another world of style waited for me where I used the computer to render my ideas and create imag-es that where focused more on commercial and graphic style that would be used for publication in the digital world. I took graphic design to refine my drawing techniques and learn more about how to use my hand drawn illustration and convert them into digital images. Using photoshop and Illustrator I learned more about clean lines and bold colors that I admire and are similar to the style desired in tattoo and graphic illustration. Here I learned how to take my guache paintings and control them to create cleaner, stylized images.

Currently I work with my husband Olivier Ficco, who is a multi-talented artist with experience in industrial and graphic design, and together we run a small graphic design company called COFT design. Together we create images for band and businesses and also work on our own individual artistic persuits to create both individual and shared art exhibitions and designs.

I have also had the opportunity to take part in several gallery exhibits my most recent was the “art of food” located at the Sunbury fine Arts Gallery in st.andrews NB Canada. I have also won a few design awards in the surface design field, 1st place in 2008 in the crossely carpet competition and 2nd place in 2007 also in the Crossely carpet competi-tion.
