Summer Theological Intensive of 2008

Beginning in the month of March, America was introduced to the Chicago pastor who mentored and served as the spiritual leader of presidential candidate Barack Obama.

While most of his remarks were taken out of context, they did create an interest in Black Liberation Theology is the core ideology of Pastor Wright.

As a result, the Graduate School of Theological Studies will convene an intensive that will concentrate on the topic during its summer session at the University of Pennsylvania scheduled for this August.

As the Hollywood Baptist Cathedral continues to grow and expand, there is an interest in properly planning for the future.

The current church building was completed in 1961 and the administrative building was acquired and renovated in the early 1970’s.

The current building plans will be the first for the church in the last 30 years. Hopes are that the new building will provide not only a new sanctuary, but will include additional educational facilities and and space for a family life center.

With advances in technology, the opportunity for Christian believers to learn God’s word and deepen their understanding of their faith and religion is greater than ever before.

The Hollywood Baptist Cathedral in partnership with the New Life School of Theology now offers individuals, both near and far, the chance to study meaningful theological issues with some of the best minds available in the body of Christ today. Now, students can pursue degrees from a certificate program all the way to a Masters degree program at their own pace and within the confines of their existing schedule and calendar.

Bridge MinistryFirst Anniversary ServiceBy Staff Writer

Excitement is in the air as members of the Hollywood Baptist Cathedral prepare to travel, as a group, to

Birmingham, AL for the annual conference of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship.

At the conference, Bishop Lewter will be preaching the official “Consecration Sermon” for nine new Bishops that will be joining the episcopal ranks of the fellowship.

The nine episcopal candidates have been trained by Bishop Lewter over the course of the last year on the campuses of Beulah Heights Bible College and Regents University in Virginia Beach, VA.

The delegation from Hollywood will be traveling to Birmingham on Monday June 26th and will be returning on Wednesday, June 28th. The Consecration Sermon will take place on Tuesday, June 27th at 10 AM.

This will mark the third time that Bishop Lewter will have preached at the annual conference, but the first time since Bishop Lewter became the Senior Pastor of the Hollywood Baptist Cathedral. At present, there are over thirty persons who have registered to travel to Alabama this summer.

For those persons who are interested in joining the Hollywood Baptist Cathedral delegation, please contact the church office.

LION HoldsIsland Wide Board MeetingDuring the month of March, during

the traditional celebration of Passover in the Jewish tradition, several members of the Hollywood Baptist Cathedral shared with the Long Island Jewish community in the observation of their “Seder Meal” held at the Jewish Community Center in Hauppauge, NY.

The ecumenical meal was an effort on the part of the Jewish community to reach out to the African American community in order to improve relations between the two communities.

The event was held in the spirit of the relationship between Rabbi Abraham Herschel and the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Bishop Lewter was part of the delegation and represented both the Hollywood Baptist Cathedral and the Long Island Organizing Network (LION), of which he is the Central Long Island Convener.

The Hollywood Baptist Cathedral mourns the loss of Sister Renalda Bennett whose home going service was held at the end of March.

Sister Bennett was a longtime member of the congregation who is best remembered for her service on the Usher Board.

Born in 1936, she moved to Long Island in 1963. She worked as a nurse for over 18 years at the Veterans Hospital in Northport, NY.
