Dear Parishioners,

St. Joseph School has been a very busy place during the month of June.

Teachers have been providing on-line learning as well as teaching small groups of

students in the school. We feel so blessed to see each other in person again.

On Tuesday, July 23, 2020 we will be celebrating our Grade Eight Graduation with a Mass and awards ceremony.

We are proud of our 17 graduates. Please keep them in your prayers as they begin a new chapter in their lives,

Mrs. Marlene Suter

REFLECTION

“Do not be Afraid, I am with You”

Over 300 times in the Bible we hear the message ‘Fear not; It is I. Don’t be afraid’ from God. Fear

paralyzes. It is an emotion with which we are all familiar and often cripples our lives and hinders us

from being the people we want to be. We can think of so many situations in life where our response to

Jesus Christ is feeble and half-hearted because of the fear of being laughed at, being out of fashion or

regarded as a weakling we often fail to stand up for what we know to be just and right in our hearts.

From evil to triumph, all that is required is for good people to remain silent. The pressure in the face

of temptation to abandon our Christian principles because of the smirks and sneers of others arises

daily and challenges our loyalty to the teaching of Jesus Christ.

In these days of indifference to the Gospel message, it is good to recall the instruction given to His

apostles as Jesus prepared them for their mission of preaching and point out to them the inevitable

danger they will face. He conveys the message of courage under persecution and exhorts His

followers three times not to be afraid (Matthew 10.26,28,31). The first exhortation is His assurance

that whatever is concealed will eventually be revealed. The second and third exhortations are related

to the tendency of preserving one’s life. This Gospel is a reminder that we cannot expect people

around us to received the teaching of Jesus Christ with open arms. Jesus makes no secret of the fact

that bearers of the word of God will suffer, ridicule and rejected, yet He urges us to bear witness to

Him openly and to be fearless in making a stand for truth and justice however hard this may make us.

Gaudete et Exsultate (129-139), highlights how paralyzing fear can be but it is the Holy Spirit who

enables us to speak the word of God with boldness and gives courage to move away from

self-centeredness in order to reach others. It is the Spirit of the Father who speaks through us in times

when we are being tried (Matthew 10:19-20). Likewise, this Spirit reminds us that nothing can

“separate us from the love of God” (Romans 8:39) and gives us the courage to face life’s challenges

with grace, even when we are being persecuted.

No one can be a follower of Jesus Christ without making an act of confidence in His work by

announcing the message of the kingdom. For the mission of Jesus was to proclaim His Father’s love

and never failed in carrying out the task. There are many situations in life when it is supportive to

remember those words of the Lord, ‘Fear not’. Whatever happens, God is always in control. His

power and His Spirit are at work in our midst and we can be sure of His steadfast love. Persecutions

may come easily, directly or indirectly but let us allow God’s love to shine through us even when

threatened by persecutions. May we take courage, especially in this time of pandemic to continue to

follow God’s word to bring God’s love to those with whom in need. Our God is a God of love and a

very good Father. Thank you God! For all fathers, thank you for the love and care. Happy Father’s

Day! Amen.
