“The Pharisees asked Jesus, ‘Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?’ He said to them in reply, ‘What did Moses command you?’

They replied, ‘Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.’ But Jesus told them, ‘Because of the hardness of your hearts

he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh.

Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.’ In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this.

CATHEDRAL CHOIR "Calling all parishioners who like to sing. Your voices are needed in the Cathedral Choir that sings at the 11:30 am Mass. Rehearsals are held every Wednesday evening beginning

Wednesday October 10th in Loyola Hall at 7pm. There are several performances this year where auditions will be held to be in the choir. Installation of the Papal Ombrellino Minor basilicas are churches outside the City of Rome that have unique his-torical significance. In 1997 Pope John Paul II named St. Joseph’s Cathedral as a minor basilica. In addition to the building’s architectural significance, St. Joseph’s is the oldest non-mission parish in the State of California. It has been a center of faith, worship, pilgrimage and service since 1803.

Last week the ombrellino, the official insignia for basilicas, was installed in the Cathedral. The ombellino is a ceremonial umbrella that signifies that the church is a papal church; it is under the umbrella of Rome. If the Holy Fa-ther visits a basilica the umbrella is fully opened. The Papal colors yellow and red are prominent. Additionally the John Paul II’s coat of arms and the coat of arms for the Diocese of San Jose are clearly visible on the bottom edges of the canopy.

In coming days a ceremonial bell will be hung from the bottom of the om-brellino. The bell symbolizes the basilica’s importance in proclaiming the Gospel. It is rung to announce papal visit to the basilica.

INSIDE/OUTSIDE Support Group for Families of Incarcerated Persons The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Restorative Jus-tice, has formed a support group for family members of incar-cerated persons. This group meets at 7:00pm on the third Tues-day of each month at the Women’s Gathering Place (First Presbyterian Church) 49 North 4th Street, San Jose 95112. The purpose of this group is to provide support, encouragement, and prayer during this difficult time. Jesus returns to Judea, Jewish territory, and resumes his public ministry. Immediately, the Pharisees approach Jesus to question him about the lawfulness of divorce. Divorce was an accepted practice among the Jewish people during Jesus’ time, per-mitting a husband to divorce his wife if he

finds her to be indecent. Jesus counters that God’s original intention was that men and women would become one flesh in marriage. Jesus describes the teaching of Moses as a concession made to God's original intention because of human stubbornness. In private, Jesus’ disciples question him further about this teaching on divorce. It is to his disciples that Jesus lays out the implications of his teaching by explaining that remar-riage after divorce is adultery while the teaching of the Pharisees permitted remarriage. Jesus further distinguished his teaching from the norms of his time by applying his words equally to men and women. Jewish culture permitted only that a husband may divorce his wife. Wives were not

permitted for any reason, including adultery. At first, the final part of today’s Gospel seems unconnected to the teaching about divorce. Together, however, these passages present a strong picture of Jesus’ emphasis on the importance of family. God intended for women and men to be joined together in marriage. Among the purposes of marriage is the raising of children. By welcoming children and fostering their relationship with God, parents and fami-lies bear witness to the Kingdom of God. At the end, the people were bringing their children to Jesus and again Jesus’ disciples show that they just don’t get it. Despite Jesus recently teaching the disciples of the value and importance of these “little ones” in the Kingdom of God, the disciples try to prevent people from bringing their children to Jesus. Jesus reprimands his disciples and wel-comes these children, offering them as an example of the kind of complete trust and dependence upon God that ought to be the attitude of all believers.

S aint of the Week Our Lady of the Rosary Saint Pius V established this feast in 1573. The purpose was to thank God for the victory of Christians over the

Turks at Lepanto—a victory attributed to the praying of the ro-sary. Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716.

The development of the rosary has a long history. First a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying 150 Hail Mary’s. Soon a mystery of Jesus’ life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary’s giving of the rosary to Saint Dominic is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of Saint Dominic. One of them, Alan de la Roche, was known as “the apostle of the rosary.” He founded the first Confraternity of the Rosary in the 15th cen-tury. In the 16th century, the rosary was de-veloped to its present form—with the 15 mysteries: joyful, sorrowful and glorious. In 2002, Pope John Paul II added five Mysteries of Light to this devotion.

Reflection The rosary helps us meditate on the great mysteries of our salvation. Pius XII called it a compendium of the gospel. The main focus is on Jesus—his birth, life, death, and resur-rection. The Our Fathers remind us that Je-sus’ Father is the initiator of salvation. The Hail Mary’s remind us to join Mary in con-templating these mysteries. They also make us aware that Mary was and is intimately joined with her Son in all the mysteries of his earthly and heavenly existence. The Glory Be’s remind us that the purpose of all life is the glory of the Trin-ity.

The rosary appeals to many. It is simple. The constant repetition of words helps create an atmosphere in which to contemplate the mysteries of God. We sense that Jesus and Mary are with us in the joys and sorrows of life. We grow in hope that God will bring us to share in the glory of Jesus and Mary forever

de octubre, aniversario de la victoria en la Batalla de Le-panto, donde las fuerzas cristianas derrotaron a los turcos que invadían Europa (atribuida a la Virgen). Clemente XI ordenó que su fiesta se celebrase por la Iglesia univer-sal. León XIII, cuya devoción por esta advocación hizo que fuera apodado el Papa del Rosario, escribió unas encí-clicas referentes al rosario, consagró el mes de octubre al rosario e incluyó el título de Reina de Santísimo Rosario en la letanía de la Virgen. Como advocaciones, tanto

la Virgen de Lourdes en su aparición de 1858 como la de Fátima en 1917, pidieron a sus videntes que reza-sen el rosario. Gran parte de los papas del siglo XX fueron muy devotos de esta advocación, Juan Pablo II manifestó en 1978 que el rosario era su oración preferida y el Papa Francisco reconoció en 2016 que era la oración que acompa-ñaba su vida. Ella es patrona de las ba-tallas, así como de multitud de ciudades y localidades repartidas por todo el mun-do. Reflexión El rosario nos ayuda a con-templar los grandes misterios de nuestra salvación. Pío XII lo nombró un com-pendio del evangelio. El enfoque princi-pal es Jesús – su nacimiento, vida, muer-te y resurrección. Los Padre Nuestros nos recuerdan que le Padre de Jesús es autor de la salvación. El Ave María nos recuerda de unirnos a María al contem-

plar estos misterios. También sirve para reconocer que María fue y está unida íntimamente con su Hijo en todos los misterios de su vida terrenal y celestial. El Gloria nos recuerda que el propósito de toda la vida es la gloria de la Trinidad.l rosario atrae a muchos. Es sencillo. La constante repetición de las palabras crea un ambiente en el cual con-templemos los misterios de Dios. Sentimos que Jesús y María nos acompañan en las alegrías y penas de la vida. Incrementa la esperanza que Dios nos aportará a compartir de la gloria de Jesús y María por eternidad.
