Pentecost Sunday Sunday, May 20, 2018
“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.”
Dear Parishioners,
Today is the Solemnity of Pentecost! The fifty day celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord comes to a close with this Sunday’s celebration of the descent of the Holy Spirit. Since Ascension Thursday, the Gospel has reminded us that Jesus himself prays for us as we await his Holy Spir-it. He prayed for many things for us. He prayed especially that we would remain in his love –the love that he and his Father in heaven share, that we would be faithful to the commandments, and that we would remain in his Truth. He prayed also that we be one with him and, following his ex-ample, one with one another that our joy would be complete. These are mighty intentions of the Lord. With the coming of the Holy Spirit, we have confidence and hope that Jesus’ prayers for us will be answered. Yes, all the Lord asks is possible with the divine help of God the Holy Spirit who comes anew this Pentecost into the whole world and the hearts of all who believe. Let us pray for one another that we will be open to the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit at work within us and among us this Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit, Come!
On Saturday morning, May 19, 2018, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput ordained six transitional deacons to the Holy Priesthood in our Cathedral Basilica. This was a grand occasion for the whole Archdiocese of Phila-delphia, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary and for these new priests, their families and friends. I invite you to pray for these new priests that they will be blessed with a happy and holy priesthood. Our own parish is espe-cially blessed at this time with two men entering Saint Charles Seminary in August. One of these men, a recent college graduate, is an active mem-ber of our Cathedral Parish Young Adult Group. The other will graduate from high school next month and is frequently the thurifer at the 6:30 PM Sunday Mass. These two men join our first year seminarian, Terrance Fulton. I am so proud of these men. I am also so proud of our Parish that we have three seminarians. Let’s pray for these three men. I plan to in-troduce them more formally to you on one of the Summer Sundays before entrance day at the Seminary. As we pray for these seminarians, we are reminded to pray for all those discerning their Christian vocations to mar-riage, to the consecrated life, and to single life.
Looking ahead to Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2018, Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 AM in the Cathedral Chapel. The Basilica and the Parish Office will be closed on Memorial Day. Following the 9:00 AM Mass on Memorial Day, everyone is invited to join in praying the Holy Rosary at the Queen of Apostles Garden behind the Basilica.
Please purchase your tickets for the Cathedral Parish Keys and Sword Event 2018 on June 29, 2018. You can purchase your tickets on line and also learn more about this year’s event at http://cathedralphila.org/keys/.
The second collection at Mass next Sunday will be for the summer maintenance of the Queen of the Apostles Garden in the rear of the Basili-ca. Thank you so very much for all of your goodness and generosity to the Cathedral Parish in so many ways and to the annual Catholic Charities Appeal.
Happy Pentecost, Father Dennis Gill

Getting to Know our Lady
The Coming of the Holy Spirit: Magisterium, Saints, Poets
Voice of the Magisterium In the atmosphere of expectation that prevailed in the Upper Room after the Ascension, what was Mary's position in relation to the descent of the Holy Spirit? The Council expressly underscores her prayerful presence while waiting for the outpouring of the Paraclete: she prays, “imploring the gift of the Spirit." This observation is particularly significant since at the Annunciation the Holy Spirit had descended upon her, “overshadowing" her and bringing about the Incarnation of the Word. Having already had a unique experience of the effective-ness of such a gift, the Blessed Virgin was in a condition to appreciate it more than anyone; indeed, she owed her moth-erhood to the mysterious intervention of the Spirit, who had made her the way by which the Saviour came into the world. Unlike those in the Upper Room who were waiting in fear-ful expectation, she, fully aware of the importance of her Son's promise to the disciples (cf. Jn 14:16), helped the com-munity to be well disposed to the coming of the “Paraclete." Thus, while her unique experience made her ardently long for the Spirit's coming, it also involved her in preparing the minds and hearts of those around her. During that prayer in the Upper Room, in an attitude of deep communion with the Apostles, with some women and with Jesus' “brethren," the Mother of the Lord prays for the gift of the Spirit for herself and for the community. It was appropriate that the first outpouring of the Spirit upon her, which had happened in view of her divine motherhood, should be repeated and reinforced. Indeed, at the foot of the Cross Mary was entrusted with a new motherhood, which concerned Jesus' disciples. It was precisely this mission that demanded a renewed gift of the Spirit. The Blessed Virgin therefore wanted it for the fruitfulness of her spiritual motherhood. While at the moment of the Incarnation the Holy Spirit had descended upon her as a person called to take part worthily in the great mystery, everything is now accomplished for the sake of the Church, whose image, model and mother Mary is called to be. In the Church and for the Church, mindful of Jesus' promise, she waits for Pentecost and implores a multiplicity of gifts for everyone, in accordance with each one's
personality and mission. Mary's prayer has particular significance in the Christian community: it fosters the coming of the Spirit, imploring his action in the hearts of the disciples and in the world. Just as in the Incarnation the Spirit had formed the physical body of Christ in her virginal womb, now in the Upper Room the same Spirit comes down to give life to the Mystical Body. Thus Pentecost is also a fruit of the Blessed Virgin's inces-sant prayer, which is accepted by the Paraclete with special favour because it is an expression of her motherly love for the Lord's disciples. In contemplating Mary's powerful intercession as she waits for the Holy Spirit, Christians of every age have fre-quently had recourse to her intercession on the long and tir-ing journey to salvation, in order to receive the gifts of the Paraclete in greater abundance. Responding to the prayer of the Blessed Virgin and the community gathered in the Upper Room on the day of Pente-cost, the Holy Spirit bestows the fullness of his gifts on the Blessed Virgin and those present, working a deep transfor-mation in them for the sake of spreading the Good News. The Mother of Christ and his disciples are granted new strength and new apostolic energy for the Church's growth. In particular, the outpouring of the Spirit leads Mary to exer-cise her spiritual motherhood in an exceptional way, through her presence imbued with charity and her witness of faith. In the nascent Church she passes on to the disciples her memories of the Incarnation, the infancy, the hidden life and the mission of her divine Son as a priceless treasure, thus helping to make him known and to strengthen the faith of believers. We have no information about Mary's activity in the early Church, but we may suppose that after Pentecost her life would have continued to be hidden and discreet, watchful and effective. Since she was enlightened and guided by the Spirit, she exercised a deep influence on the community of the Lord's disciples.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW
GLAD TIDINGS
Pentecost marks the end of the Easter season. This is the one feast of the Church’s year when we focus on the third person of the Trinity, God the Holy Spirit. This is a good day to recall what Jesus said about himself, quoting the prophet Isaiah (61:1):
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the lowly, to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, To announce a year of favor from the LORD and a day of vindication by our God.
The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus at his baptism. This same Spirit, who also came upon the disciples at Pentecost, the birthday of the church, is the Spirit who hovered over the waters of our baptism, as we were anointed with the holy oil of salvation. The Spirit came upon us with renewed strength in confirmation, as we were anointed as followers of Christ. It is the Holy Spirit who calls us anew to the chal-lenges of each day, inspiring and strengthening us to live as disciples and friends of Jesus. That does not mean the path is made easy, or that we will always be understood, accept-ed, and successful. It does mean that if we trust the Spirit and its promptings deep within us, we will always speak and act with faith and truth. It is not up to us to worry about whether people receive what we offer. Our words or deeds may be just one small seed sown in someone’s soul; our job is to sow it and to entrust to the Holy Spirit the nurturing and nourishing of that seed. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon us, so share the glad tidings!
Living Stewardship Now
The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are as follows: wis-dom, understanding, counsel (meaning right judgment), fortitude (meaning courage), knowledge, piety (meaning reverence), fear of the Lord (meaning wonder and awe in God’s presence). Without these we cannot be true followers of Christ. Pray for an increase of whichever you need most.
