WHAT IS AFTERNOON TEA

Afternoon Tea is a tea-related ritual, introduced in Britain in the early 1840s. It evolved as a mini meal to stem the hunger and anticipation of an evening meal at 8pm.

Afternoon Tea is a meal composed of sandwiches (usually cut delicately into 'fingers'), scones with clotted cream and jam, sweet pastries and cakes. Interestingly, scones were not a common feature of early Afternoon Tea and were only introduced in the twentieth century.

Heston Blumenthal

Heston's interest in cooking was sparked at the age of sixteen on a family holiday to Provence, France, during which he was taken to the Michelin-starred restaurant L'Oustau de Baumanière. There he was inspired not just by the quality of the food but also by the ‘the whole multi-sensory experience: the sound of fountains and cicadas, the heady smell of lavender, the sight of the waiters carving lamb at the table’ and realised he wanted to be part of that world. He began learning how to cook, citing the cookbook series Les recettes originals which featured many of the foremost French chefs such as Alain Chapel, as particularly influential.[9]

Jamie Oliver• His first job was a pastry chef at Antonio

Carluccio's Neal's Yard restaurant, where he first gained experience with preparing Italian cuisine, and developed a relationship with his mentor Gennaro Contaldo. Later in his career, Oliver employed Contaldo to help run his successful collection of high street restaurants, Jamie's Italian. Oliver then moved to The River Café, Fulham, as a sous chef. It was there that he was noticed by the BBC in 1997 after making an unscripted appearance in a documentary about the restaurant, "Christmas at the River Cafe". In 1999 his BBC show The Naked Chef debuted, and his cookbook became a #1 bestseller in the UK. That same year, Oliver was invited to prepare lunch for then-Prime Minister Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street.

Gordon RamseyBy this time, Ramsay's interest in cooking had already begun, and rather than be known as the football player with the gammy knee, at age 19, Ramsay paid more serious attention to his culinary education. After weighing his options, Ramsay enrolled at North Oxfordshire Technical College, sponsored by the Rotarians, to study Hotel Management. He describes his decision to enter catering college as "an accident, a complete accident".In the early 1980s, he worked as a commis chef at the Wroxton House Hotel then ran the kitchen and 60-seat dining room at the Wickham Arms, until his sexual relationship with the owner's wife made the situation difficult. Ramsay then moved to London, where he worked in a series of restaurants until being inspired to work for the temperamental Marco Pierre White at Harvey's.

Nigella Lawson

Lawson originally worked in publishing, first taking a job under publisher Naim Attallah. At 23, she began her career in journalism after Charles Moore had invited her to write for The Spectator. Her initial work at the magazine consisted of writing book reviews, after which period she became a restaurant critic there in 1985. She became the deputy literary editor of The Sunday Times in 1986 at the age of 26.She occasionally drifted into the public's eye, attracting unwanted publicity in 1989 when she admitted voting for Labour in an election as opposed to her father's Conservative Party, and then criticised Margaret Thatcher in print. Regarding her political relationship with her father, Lawson has stated, "My father would never expect me to agree with him about anything in particular and, to be honest, we never talk about politics much."
