• This article is based on Gardner's socio-educational model and the significance ofmotivation as a contributing factor in secondlanguage acquisition. According to him themotivation is something crucial since is thelearner's orientation with regard to the goal oflearning a second language and also isdivided into two basic types: integrative andinstrumental. This both forms are examined inlight of research which has been undertakento establish the correlation between the formof motivation and successful secondlanguage acquisition. Motivation in theJapanese EFL context is then discussed andstudies which have been conducted in thefield investigated.
