Each year CVCC honors members of an organization that we hold near and dear to our hearts. These individuals work with CVCC’s staff and students and go above and beyond to make each person’s experience a positive one.

Our first winners are Ben Courson and Eileen Toghill from Ohio CAT. Courson works as a technical training supervisor and Toghill as an employment manager.

Courson has been a key supporter of CVCC’s Power Equipment Technology pro-gram. Courson has proven his dedication to CVCC’s students by lending his professional time through presenting students with top-ics related to heavy equipment and systems operations. In addition, he provides tours of

the Ohio CAT dealership and serves as a judge at regional, state, and national diesel contests. Lastly, Courson serves on the Power Equip-ment Advisory Committee where he continues

to give guidance to improve the curriculum of this program. Toghill also serves as a huge supporter of the Power Equipment Technology pro-gram as she provides our students with real-life experiences like the Industry Interviews Project. This program gives students the opportunity to visit with different companies to learn more about their organization and their industry. Thank you to both of these recipients. CVCC truly appreciates your dedication.

CVCC’s second winner is Mary Stevens. She was nominated by Patty Kemp, Transi-tion-To-Work instructor for all the hard-work and dedication she has displayed through working with her class. Stevens serves as a dietary manager at Chippewa Place Retirement Living in Brecksville. Students enrolled in this program have a non-paid job training site at this facility. Every Tuesday, students work with Stevens in the dining room. She is more than just a supervisor, but takes a personal interest in the advance-ment of each student. Stevens really has a passion for working with special needs students. In addition, the students have bonded with her and they have developed a true connection. Once they have transitioned out of the program, they are eager to visit with Stevens and often times ask about her. Stevens has made an impact on the lives of these students through teaching them valuable working skills. These life-long lessons have allowed many students from the Tranisiton-To-Work program to obtain quality ex-periences despite living with a disability. We are honored to have Stevens working with our Transition-To-Work students. This award was well deserved.

Kevin Kennedy, Software Development Student

Kevin Kennedy received an invitation to apply for this year’s inaugural Career and Technical Education (CTE) U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. On June 22, 2015 Presi-

dent Obama signed an expansion of the U.S. Presidential Scholars program to include CTE students. Guiding principles for the nomination include academic rigor, techni-cal competence, employability skills and ingenuity and creativity. Kennedy recently graduated from Nor-donia Hills High School and was enrolled in the Programming and Software Develop-ment program at CVCC. He was one of only five students from Ohio, which according to the Ohio Department of Education has over 121,000 students enrolled in CTE, who was invited to apply. Kennedy did apply for the scholarship this past February and was selected as a semifinalist. Even though he was not chosen as a Presidential Scholar, CVCC is confident he has a bright future ahead of him. This coming fall, Kennedy will use his ca-

reer tech skills he learned at CVCC to attend the University of Texas at Dallas majoring in computer engineering. Thank you for sharing your talents with CVCC over the past few years. We wish this young man an abundance of success.
