In December 1965, my entire Air Force Squadron at Myrtle Beach was reassigned to Misawa Air Base, Japan, about 100 miles north of the epicenter of the recent earthquake.

I recall not long after arriving in Japan, coming to my quarters after a long day of work. Since we could not bring wives over until we had found off-base housing we were living in the bachelor officers quarters. I had on my flight suit, which, like a jump suit, had the main pockets in front of the chest. I did not realize my pockets were unzipped and as I pulled my one-piece flight off, coins rolled all over the hard wood floor. Since I was so tired I decided I would take a shower, go to bed, and find the coins in the morning. But when I woke in the morning I had very little time to get ready and be at work on time. I left the coins wherever they had rolled to on the floor. That evening when I returned to my room all of my coins were sitting on my table in a neat little stack, where the housemaid had left them.

I have been forever impressed with that because I have been very few places where such honesty would be displayed.

In the news, it has been reported the obvious lack of looting in the areas of destruction after the earthquake and tsunami. Might I say it is because of a culture which, even though not Christian, has been raised with an appreciation of honor. No one should have more of an appreciation of honor and honesty than we Christians. Yet, in our supposedly Christian country and culture we do not see such dedication to honor. The Japanese are being taught these things as children in their homes and in their schools. As our families have been falling apart, our children are largely lacking such an upbringing. If we could only save the family in our own culture we would do more to solve our problems of crime and poverty than the expenditure of any amount money

We can empathize to some degree with the

Japanese, to the extent we might have been involved in the recovery from Hurricane Katrina and saw the devastation along the Gulf Coast. Our prayers go out to those who have lost homes, businesses and especially, loved ones. We can learn from them in their discipline, diligence, and determination even as their tears portray their sorrow and loss.

Should you desire to make a donation to assist in the recovery, if you do not have a known spiritual organization, which would properly use the funds to assist in Japan, I would encourage you to make your donation through the American Red Cross.

It all started with a single invitation

and then a question

Who will make a difference in the

lives of these Men?”

Chris Barber was working in Brooklyn New York at the original Teen Challenge on Clinton Avenue and had no idea how this invitation would change his life.

He was working with Pastor Don Wilkerson, co-founder of the Christian Discipleship Ministry for men and women with life controlling problems. Don and his brother, Dave founded the ministry over fifty years ago.

CityLight Director, Redfern II, went to New York to see this Christ centered drug recovery

program with an 80% success rate. He met with Don Wilkerson and questioned him about what was the d i fference in the Teen Challenge Program.

Wilkerson told Redfern it was the Jesus Factor. He said,”Prayer happens here, hope lives here and changed lives leave here.”

We had to join this program, said Redfern. “They not only believed in prayer but witnessed the healing of drug addicts.”

21

The call to Discipleship Ministry

Redfern and Wilkerson made arrangements to set up an extension of Brooklyn Teen Challenge in South Carolina.

Redfern asked Wilkerson to recommend a director for the Program. With a smile , he said, “I have just the man you need. Chris Barber.”

Barber was a rising star in Teen Challenge with over twenty years of experience. He had previously worked in several Teen Challenges in the Northeast. He was looking for an opportunity to serve in an area with no Teen Challenge.

“When I met Chris, I knew that God had answered our prayers. He was intelligent, articulate, strong and good looking but most importantly he loved God with his whole heart and wanted to help men and women come to know the lord,” said Redfern.

Redfern said, “Chris was so impressive that I immediately invited him to come to South Carolina for a visit and to interview for the position.”

22

When Chris arrived in South Carolina he suffered culture shock. It was such a drastic change in weather, landscape.and religious culture.

“I thought to myself, what a beautiful state”. As we took a quick tour of some of the landmarks and historic sites I began to feel like this was surely a place that I could call home,” said Chris.

“At that time it was just a thought. Little did I know that God (and Redfern) had a plan.”

On his first evening in Carolina Chris went for a walk and saw young men hanging out in the street and laying out mats that

would soon be their beds. He asked Redfern, “Why are there so many young men that are homeless and seemingly hopeless?”

The next morning Chris preached at Finlay Park to over 50 homeless people. In the middle of his message, he says, he experienced something awesome. “When I gave my testimony everyone looked at me and I could see hope in their eyes.”

Chris said, “After the Message that’s when I met “Jonathon.” It’s a name I will never forget.” Jonathan was a small man, maybe 5’7” in stature and thin in build.

Jonathon came to me and said I want to change my life…. I need Jesus to help me! Can you help me to change and be more like him? That’s when I knew that God was calling me to South Carolina.

After doing some research and finding out that over 95 thousand people were turned down treatment for drug and alcohol addiction in Carolina, in 2005 and even more in 2010, I was compelled to come in September 2010, and start what would become CityLight Teen Challenge Outreach Ministries. I recognized that there needed to be a training ground, a boot camp for men to

23

come and receive life skills and biblical training and become prayer warriors and soldiers for Christ. I am happy to report that God is raising up an army and this summer we are going into battle!!Although it has not been easy, and everyday we are dependant upon God to send what we need with the help of some faithful donors, we are now serving approximately 12 men in our inpatient facility and helping numerous families with outpatient counseling and support on a daily basis. Even greater…. Jonathon is now serving in our ministry and giving back to the community that he was once a part of as a new creation in Christ. We pray that you will consider being a part, or supporting this

great ministry and allow the Lord to work through you. I ask you now, the same question that God asked me over 6 months ago…

”who will make a difference in the

lives of these men… and why

not let it be YOU?”

25

On March 11, 2011, Japan was devastated by a appreciate and love the Japanese people.  My heart sank, as did the rest of the world, to learn of their sorrow, and I began to pray for a message of hope.  There is only One who can bring real hope to the world.  His name is Jesus.

Hope can be found in the Person of Jesus Christ, Second Member of the Trinity, the Son of God.  Jesus most certainly IS God and always will be, but Jesus refers to Himself in the Scripture as Son of Man more often than Son of God.  He is the God-Man.  That means that as a man, He has experienced all the human tragedies possible and has overcome them as the Son of Man filled with the Holy Spirit.  He has shown us how to overcome all circumstances of life victoriously.  We can overcome just as He has overcome!  That is hope!

I love the way the Scripture speaks of Jesus as life and light.  John 1: 3 - 5; 9 - "Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.  In Him was life, and that life was the light of men."  "The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world."

Do you see it?  Do you understand?

Jesus Christ made the world and the universe. and all that is in it.  He is still in control even when we don't understand what is going on around

us.  He is the One who saves a little baby swept out of his mother's arms in the midst of a tsunami only to be restored to that same distraught mother's arms later safely and soundly.  In that, we have a glimpse of what He is doing under the rubble of the earthquake where people are trapped and dying.  At those moments, He is still life and light to every man in the world.  The earthquake's rubble cannot keep Jesus, the Light of the World from shining in the darkness...to every man...my favorite part.

In Jesus, there is real hope.  He is the Saviour, the One who died for us on a cruel cross and was raised to life again from the grave by the power of the Father.  He is alive forever more...alive in the hearts and lives of all those who will trust and believe in Him whether they be trapped miles deep within a mine in Chile or trapped under the rubble of an earthquake in Japan.  Nothing keeps him out!  He is the One who returns the little ones swept away by doubt and confusion to the safety of the loving arms of the Father. That's my Jesus.  The hope of the world!
