OBJECTIVES
SWBAT:-explain why we need the metric system- distinguish between metric units- understand why we need different sized units
![Page 3: Catalyst](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062501/56816499550346895dd67096/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
ENGLISH SYSTEMYou are familiar with inches, feet, miles, pounds, quarts, and so on.This is not an easy system!
How many inches in 1 foot?12 inches
How many feet in a yard?3 feet
How many yards in a mile?1760 yards
![Page 4: Catalyst](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062501/56816499550346895dd67096/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
METRIC SYSTEMMetric system is decimalized, meaning it has a base of 10This means that each unit is 10 times bigger or smaller than the next.
This makes it much easier!
![Page 5: Catalyst](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062501/56816499550346895dd67096/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
WHY DO WE USE THE METRIC SYSTEM?
We use the metric system because we can easily manipulate metric units into more useful sizes and measures. We start with a base unit and manipulate it to make smaller or bigger
![Page 6: Catalyst](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062501/56816499550346895dd67096/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
METRIC SYSTEM• Another goal of the metric system is to have a single unit for any physical quantity across the world.
• This allows scientists to communicate in a standard mathematical language regardless of where they come from!

METRIC PREFIXESIn the English system, there are
inches, feet, yards, and miles to measure length
In the metric system, we add prefixes to our base units to create larger and smaller unitsPrefix- placed at the beginning
