Cataloguing Commission

The first of the Commission's two sessions dealt with international standards in

cataloguing and their implications for countries and/or institutions about to move

from in-house cataloguing to automated online systems. In his introduction, Anders Lönn stressed that the objective of the session was not

to tell anyone what choices — of standards and systems — to make, but to share the

knowledge of some of the factors that should go into making such choices. Lenore

Coral, who has been closely involved in the ISBD (International standard bibliographic description) Programme in IFLA and IAML, spoke about the role of the ISBDs vis-à-vis national cataloguing rules. James P. Cassaro, active in US cataloguing committees on

behalf of MLA, outlined the similarities and differences between US MARC and UNI MARC (which in itself exists in national variants).

In the papers and the following lively discussion a number of points were made,

among them:

1) in spite of the differences, national and otherwise, among the MARC formats, the standardization they have provided since the 1960s has greatly facilitated, and indeed made possible, international communication of bibliographic data between libraries,

2) faced with the choice among different MARC dialects, smaller libraries should be careful to consult with their national library or other standard-setting body, and above

all not design yet another format of their own. The recent éSFR MARC format where

input had been sought and received from the music libraries, was mentioned in this

respect,

3) minor differences in bibliographic description practices are becoming less crucial

in the online environment than improved access to the information,

4) in line with this, there are two somewhat opposing trends, one towards simplified or minimal-level cataloguing, the other towards enhancement of the records with

additional access points,

5) as the ISBDs do not govern the choice or formulation of headings (forms of names,

uniform titles, etc.), more effort might be directed to improving uniformity in these

respects, to authority work and the like, in order to further improve the exchange of

bibliographic data.

At the second session, the Commission heard a paper by Emanuel Muntag of the

Matica slovenskâ in Martin: Die systematische Klassifizierung der slowakischen Volkslieder als Ausdruck der mitteleuropäischen interethnischen Beziehungen. The

classification, based on a decimal system, was intended to serve as a model for other

similar repertories. The main part of the session concerned the forthcoming ISMN standard, notably

the question, which of the many numbers that might be assigned to one and the same

music publication should be chosen for cataloguing purposes? For a solution, see the

The report of the only working group of the Commission, that on Uniform Titles

for Anonymous Music Other Than Liturgical, appears below.

Since the undersigned had announced his intention to step down as chair due to pres

sure of other work, elections were held. The new officers, who will serve a two-year

term until the next regular elections, are: Chair: James P. Cassaro, Cornell University;

Vice-Chair: Bettina van Seyfried, Deutsches Musikarchiv, Berlin. Mark Ziomek, Library of Congress, will remain Secretary.

Arbeitsgruppe Uniform Titles for Anonymous Music Other Than Liturgical

Aufgabe dieser Arbeitsgruppe ist es, einen Vorschlag für die Ansetzung älterer musika

lischer Sammelhandschriften auszuarbeiten. Als erstes wurden im vergangenen Jahr

zwei Listen derjenigen Sammelhandschriften zusammengestellt, die spezifische Titel wie Chansonnier cordiforme, Lochamer Liederbuch etc. tragen. Die eine Liste enthält

alle Sammelhandschriften mit spezifischen Titeln aus den "Sources"-Artikeln des New Grove, während die zweite Liste eine Gegenüberstellung der New-Grove-Liste

mit den entsprechenden Titelversionen, die im Dizionario enciclopedico universale

della musica e dei musicisti und im Katalog der Biblioteca del Conservatorio G. Verdi in Milano aufgeführt sind. Bei der Besprechung dieser Listen während der 1. Sitzung hat sich herausgestellt, daß auch die Quellen mit spezifischen Titeln Ansetzungspro bleme bereiten können, wenn nämlich verschiedene Versionen des gleichen Titels

vorliegen, dies insbesondere bei den Titeln, für die es Fassungen in verschiedenen

Sprachen gibt. Aus diesem Grund, aber auch weil schwer auszumachen ist, welche der

existierenden Formen eigentlich der „Originaltitel" ist, wurde beschlossen, in der vorgesehenen Liste der spezifischen Titel alle Versionen aus Lexika und sonstiger Fach

literatur, aber wenn möglich auch aus den wichtigsten Bibliothekskatalogen, zu

sammenzustellen, jedoch ohne Hinweis darauf, welche Fassung für die Haupteintragung

(main entry] und welche für die Nebeneintragungen (added entries) gewählt werden

sollen. Dies mögen die Bibliotheken selbst entscheiden. Diese Liste sollte zudem

auch den Standort und die Signatur der Quellen enthalten, um deren eindeutige Identifikation zu gewährleisten.

Zu den allgemeinen Empfehlungen, welche diese Liste begleiten sollen, gehören:

1. Für Sammelhandschriften mit spezifischen Titeln sollte eine Nebeneintragung unter

der Bibliothek, gemäß den Regeln der Bibliothek, angelegt werden.

2. Sammelhandschriften mit einem unspezifischen Titel, d. h. Quellen, deren Titel einen Gattungsbegriff wie "Chansonnier", "Manuscript", "Codex" etc., den Na

men des heutigen und/oder ehemaligen Standorts und die Signatur enthalten, sollen

gemäß den von der jeweiligen Bibliothek angewendeten Regeln für die Ansetzung von Einheitssachtiteln für solche Fälle behandelt werden.

Als Illustration, wie ein solcher Einheitssachtitel aussehen könnte, werden die vier heute praktizierten Verfahrensweisen mit Beispielen vorgestellt: — Die Ansetzungsweisen nach den beiden Regelwerken AACR und AFNOR, — die Ansetzungsweisen der Biblioteca del Conservatorio G. Verdi, Milano, und der

Staatsbibliothek Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin.
