    INTRODUCTION.

    The

    Stracliey

    and

    Winterbottom

    collections,

    on

    which

    this

    Cata-

    logue is based, were

    made

    between

    the years

    1846-49

    within

    the

    province

    of

    Kuniaon

    and

    in

    adjoining

    parts

    of

    Garliwal and

    Tibet.

    This portion of

    the

    Western

    Himalaya is

    situated

    between

    the

    Nepal frontier on

    the

    East

    and the

    Bhj'igirathi

    or

    Eastern

    branch

    of

    the

    Ganges

    Kiver on the

    West. Its

    area

    (excluding the

    Tibetan

    portion)

    amounts

    approximately to 11,500

    square

    miles.

    Very little

    was known

    regarding

    the

    flora

    of

    Kumaon

    until

    about

    sixty

    years

    ago,

    when

    Lieut, (now

    Sir

    Eichard)

    Stracliey

    commenced

    his

    scientific

    survey

    of

    the

    mountain ranges

    westward

    of Nepal, and afterwards,

    in

    1848,

    undertook

    an

    extensive

    jovirney

    with

    Mr.

    J. E.

    Winterbottom

    to

    the

    Rakas-tiil

    and

    Manasowar

lakes in Tibet. It was on

    the latter

    occasion

    that a large

    pro-

    portion of

    the

    plants contained

    in what is

    generally known as

    the

    I

    Strachey

    and

    AVinterl)ottom Herbarium '

    were

    collected.

    The

    ^collection,

    as

    Sir

    R. Strachey

    informs us,

    was

    principally made

    J

    along

    a line extending

    through the

    province

    of Kumaon, across

    '

    the Himalaya

    in

    a

    direction

    generally

    perpendicular to

    that

    of

    the

    ranges of mountain

    of which

    the

    chain

    consists,

    over a dis-

    f'

    tance of some

    eighty or

    ninety

    English

    miles. The

    region

    traversed

    passes

    from South-West to

    North-East,

    commencing

    in

    J^ the

    plain of

    Rohilkhand at an

    elevation

    of

    about

    1,000

    ft. above

    ^

    the

    sea-level, through

    the

    snowy

    ranges,

    ft)llowing

    for

    the most

    (^

    part

    the customary

    routes, and

    terminating

    in

    the

    Tibetan

    plateau

    ,

    at an

    altitude

    of between

    14,000

    and

    15,000

    ft. on

    the upper

    course

    of

    the

    river

    Introduction.

    desires

    to

    recognize

    the

    continued assistance afforded

    to

    him

    in

    the preparation

    of

    the

    Catalogue

    by

    Sir

    J.

    D.

    Hooker,

    Mr.

    C.

    B.

    Clarke, and the late

    Mr.

    .C.

    \V. Hope

    ;

    also

    to Mr.

    C.

    H.

    Wright

    an(i other members

    of

    the

    Kew Herbarium staff.

    The herbarium,

    which

    included

    over 2,000

    species, was

    dis-

    tributed

    in

    1852-53

    to

    the

    Hookerian

    Herbarium,

    the British

    Museum,

    the

    Linnean

    Society, and

    to

    some

    foreign

    museums,

    carefully

    ticketed

    with notes

    of

    the

    locality

    and elevation at

    which

    the

    specimens

    were

    found. A

    provisionally

    named cata-

    logue, prepared

    by

    Sir

    K.

    Strachey, was printed

    and

    copies were

    sent

    to the

    herbaria

    to

    which

    sets

    of

    the plants

    had been

    pre-

    sented.^

    The original Catalogue

    of

    the

    Strachey

    and

    Winterbottom

    collections,

    as

    drawn

    up

    by

    Sir

    R.

    Strachey,

    was

    reprinted

    and

    first

    published

    in 1882 in Atkinson's

    Gazetteer

    of the

    Himalayan

    districts

    of

    the N.W.

    Provinces

    and

    Oudh. The manuscript of

    the

    present

    Catalogue, which

    may

    be

    regarded

    as

    the

    second

    edition,

    was made over

    to me

    by

    Sir Richard

    Strachey about

    two

    years

    ago

    for

    final revision. The form

    originally

    given to

    it

    (which

    has been

    retained)

    was designed

    rather

    to

    assist in recog-

    nizing

    the

    plants

    than

    to

    afford a scientific

    enumeration of

    them.

    The

    arrangement

    of

    the

    Orders,

    Genera and

    Species

    of

    the

    Flowering

    Plants is in

    accordance

    with

    that

    adopted

    in Sir

    Joseph

    Hooker's

    Flora

    of

    British

    India.

    The

    ferns

    were

    named

    and

    arranged by the late Mr.

    C.

    W.

    Hope

    ;

    the

    Hepaticea3

    and

    mosses

    were

    undertaken

    by Mr.

    C.

    H. Wright, following the plan

    adopted

    by

    Mr.

    W.

    Mitten

    in

    his

    paper

    published

    in the

    Journal

    of

    the

    Linnean

    Society, vol.

    v.

    (1859).

    The lichens were named

    by

    Mr.

    Churchill

    Baljington

    at about the same time,

    and

    have

    not

    since

    been

    revised.

    Neither

    fungi

    nor

    algai

    were

    collected.

    When

    the Catalogue

    was

    published

    in

    1882

    only

    two

    volumes

    and

    a portion

    of vol.

    iii.

    of

    the

    Flora

    of

    British

    India

    had

    appeared

    ;

    and

    as

    thirty-four

    years have elapsed since

    the

    latter

    work was

    commenced,

    it is not surprising to

    find in the new list

    considerable

    alterations in nomenclature.

    For

    the benefit of

    those wlio

    may wish to verify in

    some

    of

    the new

    names the

    identifications

    of

    many of the

    discarded names

    of

    the

    old

    cata-

    logue,

    an

    alphabetically

    arranged

    list

    of

    eiiuivalents

    has

    been

    prepared,

    and will

    be

    found

    on pages 248-2G1,

    preceding

    Of

    the

    more

    important

    contributions

    to our knowledge of

    the

    Kumaou

    flora

within recent times should bo mentioned the

    large

    and valuable

    collection

    of

    plants made

    by the

    late

    Colonel

    Anderson, K.E.,

    by

    whom

    they were presented to the

    Saharanpur

    Herbarium.

    The plants

    were

    collected chiefly

    in the

    vicinity

    of

    Naiui-tal,

    and

    amongst

    them

    were

    a

    few undescribed species.

    During the summer months of

    1883

    I

    explored

    very carefully

    the

Bhngirathi or Gangotri Valley, also Jumnotri

    and

    the

    upper

    portion

    of

    the

    Junma Valley at elevati(ms between

    11,000

    and

    16,000

    ft.

    Also during

    the three

    following years

    (1884-86)

    I

    made extensive

    tours through British

    Garhwiil

    to N.

    Kumaou

    and

    W.

    Nepal

    with

    my

    friend

    Mr.

    J.

    E.

    Eeid,

    who

    was

    at

    that

    time

    Chief

    Secretary

    to

    the

    Governmejit

    of

    the

    N.W.

    Provinces

    and

    Oudh.

    As these

    expeditions were specially planned

    to

    enable

    us

    to

    visit as far

    as

    possible

    unexplored

    ground, we

    were

    able

    to

    add

    very

    considerably to

    the

    known

    flora

    of this

    portion

    of

    the

    Western

    Himalaya.

    Some

    additional no^'elties

    were subsecpiently

    obtained

    from

    that region by means

    of

    trained

    native

    plant-

    collectors

    sent

    from

    Saharanpur.

    The

    following

    table

    contains a

    summary

    of

    the

    Orders,

    Genera,

    Species

    of the
