Species 2000 is an autonomous
federation of taxonomic database
custodians, involving taxonomists
throughout the world in collating a
uniform and validated index to the
worlds known species.
Initiated by the scientific unionsIUBS,CODATA and IUMS, withTDWG
and formally started at an Inaugural
Workshop in the Philippines funded by
the GEF in 1996.
Integrated Taxonomic InformationSystem is a partnership of numerous
organizations from the United States,
Canada and Mexico, and data
stewards and experts from around the
world.
ITIS database is an automated
reference of scientific and common
names of biota of interest to North
America.

Programme will provide:Programme will provide:1. an electronic baseline species list for use in
inventorying projects worldwide;
2. the index for an Internet gateway to species
databases worldwide;
3. a reference system for comparison of inventories;
4. a comprehensive worldwide catalogue for checking
the status, classification and naming of species.

goals are achieved by:goals are achieved by:
1. Forming a "federation" of existing taxonomic databases: Species
2000.
2. Stimulating the establishment of global species databases for all
groups of organisms, by accelerating the completion of existingdatabases and developing new ones.
3. Working to an ultimate goal of providing a computer-based index of
all known species.
4. Developing procedures to maintain the databases and to update thetaxonomy.
5. Co-operating with international nomenclatural authorities in
stabilizing nomenclature .

Global Species DatabasesGlobal Species Databases(GSDs) monographic databases with global
coverage of the species in one taxonCan be put together end-to-end because they do not overlap
and they contain a consistent taxonomic treatment for the
whole of one higher taxon. (Floras / Faunas do overlap, and
must therefore be reworked before being put together.)

Species 2000 calls for taxonomists or any
organizations, who are (or intend to)
building databases which cover all of theworlds species within one particular group,
to be data contributors or peer reviewers,
