The numbers in black are Breton’s, those in red are my own. I
present these silent advance sheets, believing they will at once aid
collectors in placing the different groups in their minds, ultimately lead-
ing to recognition of particular numbers. The circles lettered “ O ” in
the centre represent obverses;the plain ones, the reverses.

CATALOGUE
MONTREAL SOU TOKENS.
>2.1 Obverse, Breton 670; reverse, 687. An unpublished combina-
tion. UN sou is nearly invisible, otherwise the entire piece is
very good. Placed in circulation more than seventy years
ago, and from 1869 to 1908 escaped identity and recognition
by Sandham, McLachlan, LeRoux, Breton and Courteau. i
This piece came to me labelled as 686. It was probably passed as a dupli-
cate of this number, by reason of the weakness of UN sou, without further
investigation. It is fairly illustrated by LeRoux 567, with a rudely engraved
obverse, but a finely executed and true reverse. This reverse, however, he also
uses in representations of 542 and 552 (B. 687 and 688), which are correct and
the only employment of it published up to date. The true reverse belonging to
686 he does not illustrate in his work;we may therefore assume that he substi-
tuted it as a measure of economy, and was not aware that such a combination
really existed.
