ANNUAL REPORT

As we celebrate the 11th anniversary of the Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards it is my pleasure to provide a review of the previous 12 months and an update on the Guild.

Every year of the Guilds existence has seen growth in the industry, demonstrated for us by increased membership and awards entries year on year. We are pleased to say that this year the growth has continued with a record 126 members at the time of writing and 964 beers entered into the awards.

It has been a challenging but rewarding year for the Guild with some limitations on what the organisation has been able to achieve while we worked through a full review of the Guild and our future. Nevertheless there have been some key highlights throughout the year and we look forward to sharing these with you at our upcoming Conference, AGM and Awards Dinner.

HIGHLIGHTS

There have been a number of highlights throughout the last year that are worthy of mention as we review the previous 12 months, including

- Education: Progress continues to be made on providing a better framework for recognised education opportunities in the Brewing sector. The Institute of Brewing and Distilling are activein an o erworl cla alification an withthe il a i tanceweho ethese will soon be recognised by NZQA.

- Advocacy: The Guild has been involved with and made submissions on a review of the Customs and Excise act, the Alcohol Excise Plan and more recently on industry consultation relating to Energy Labelling of Alcoholic Beverages. Special thanks to our President Emma McCashin who regularly takes the lead on ensuring the Guild’s voice is heard at a regulatory and legislative level.

- Awards/Conference: We are thrilled to be bringing the Guild Awards to the South Island orthefir tti e incethe il wa or e hi earinChri tch rchwill eagreat

opportunity for the industry to get together and celebrate and experience the great beer culture that has developed in the mainland over the last 20 years. This has been a big piece of work for the committee and especially Cathrine van Venrooy so if you have not already booked yourself in please consider joining us for the celebration.

- Sub-Committee Review: As an outcome of the 2016 AGM the Guild formed a sub-committee of industry participants to review the future structure and purpose of the Guild. The sub-committee has returned a challenging and aspirational proposal that would see the Guild grow and mature. We engaged in the broadest consultation with our members in the history of the Guild and as part of the recent AGM members will vote on the recommendations.

At the time of writing the AGM had not taken place, but whatever the outcome it has been a valuable process for the Guild and will set a clear direction for the future of the organisation.

AWARDS SUMMARY

This year saw 943 entries judged which was about on par with last year. Judging was held over three days from September 29 to October 1 overseen by a panel of 28 judges. This year we expanded the number of trainee positions with four returning from last year joined by another eightfir t earatten ee o tena e whatitta e to eco ea eer gean whileobvious sensory skills are a necessity, that only makes up about 50% of a good judge. Stylistic knowledge, brewing knowledge as well as a number of personal and behavioural attributes all contribute to the make-up of a well-rounded beer judge. The goal of the trainee program isn’t just to create new judges but to also allow those attending to test their sensory skills while immersing themselves in the biggest three day crash course in learning they will have had the opportunity to be a part of for a long time. Feedback from all trainees is that they are simply blown away by what they learn during the course of the weekend, which can only help them when they go back to their respective breweries. We welcomed a group of 10 students from the Food Technology Department at Massey University as stewards. This is the 8th year of the partnership and a huge gratitude of thanks to the team for their commitment and diligence over the weekend. Last year I mentioned that one of the Massey students from previous years had gone on to gain full time employment in the industry. In all, judges awarded 61 Gold Medals, 175 Silver and 254 Bronze. Interestingly, the number of golds awarded increased from 49 last year while silver increased from 145. Overall percentage of medals awarded was 52% (up from last year’s low of 46%). While this increase is encouraging, I believe it is still far lower than where it should be. Entries have been sent to the awards ‘ex brewery’ so have by-passed normal distribution and retail channels. If only +/- 50% of entries have been judged as medal worthy when received straight from the brewery, then it raises the question as to the overall quality of product purchased by the consumer. All but one of this year’s trophy winners were packaged (can or bottle) so the issue isn’t one of freshness. I would encourage all entrants to review their judges notes when received. Each keg entry gets handled a minimum of six times during the course of the awards while over 6000 glasses were washed. These things simply don’t happen without the commitment of a hard-working team.
