Technical Information, Flange Sizes

Nominal Internal Diameters (DN) and Flange SizesAllectra uses the internationally accepted system of nominal internal diameters (DN) to identify flange sizes. Thesecorrespond with other naming conventions as the following table. The DN convention applies to Copper Gasket Flanges(CF Types) Clamp Flanges (KF) Types, ISO-K, and ISO-F flanges (LF Types) The sizes DN25 and DN50 are not in common usefor CF flanges. Additionally there are sizes DN80 (4 5/8"), DN125 (6 ¾") and O.D.s 13 ¼", 14" and 16 ½".These are available onrequest.

Choice of Stainless Steel for UHV

The best choice of stainless steel is the type 316LN (1.4429). It has the lowest magnetic permeability, the best stability afterworking and good TIG welding characteristics. It also has good corrosion resistance particularly against Chloridecompounds. Unfortunately this material is quite expensive and is generally not available in the form of tubes.

The best compromise between price, performance and availability is the close relative 316L(1.4404). This material has verysimilar properties to 316LN. The good welding characteristics, corrosion resistance and mechanical hardness are verysimilar. The magnetic permeability can be as low as 1.005.

Vacuum Specification, Conformance & Terms

Vacuum-Specification / Operating Temperatures

All UHV Components are specified for a maximum differential pressure of 1 bar and for use in vacuum better than1*10-10 mbar. Components are leak tested for a leak rate less than 5 *10-10 mbar /l s. Almost all components are bakeable to 200°C, unless otherwise specified in the description.

KF and ISO-K Components are specified for use to 10-8 mbar provided that the gasket material can withstand elevatedtemperatures. Viton is suitable for 150°C. The maximum differential pressure is 1 bar.

Feedthroughs, some of which contain Kovar (a NiFe alloy which has a good match to the thermal extension of Glassand Ceramic) can be used down to -50°C. At lower temperatures, a phase transition occurs which can damage thefeedthrough. Special cryogenic feedthroughs are available, please ask the Sales Office for details.

Conformance of Allectra Components

Allectra CF UHV Components use the internationally accepted copper gasket flange system. They are compatiblewith the Varian Conflat® and CF or FC types from Vacuum Generators and other manufacturers for sizes up to andincluding DN200CF. They conform to the Alternate Series of Flanges described in ISO 3669. For sizes over DN200CF, nointernational standard exists. Please ask Sales Office for advice in this case.

KF types are compatible with Klein Flange types and conform to ISO 1609.ISO-K & ISO-F types are compatible with LF (Large Flange) types and conform to ISO 2861.

Allectra Sub-D UHV Sockets are made from Glass Ceramic. The most important reasons for this are:• Impermeable material -does not absorb gas or water vapour.• Material is free from Carbon compounds of any sort.• High Bakeout temperatures – up to 300°C (Glass Ceramic itself can

be baked to 700°C.). It is also suitable for cryogenic use.

1.4: Thermocouple Pins, Adaptors & Tools

Sub-D Feedthroughs may be used as Thermocouple Feedthroughs. In order to do this the standard D Type feedthrough isused but the air and vacuum side Pins are changed to Thermocouple types. These are made from Chromel and Alumelrespectively. Although the use of Nickel pin material in contact with the Thermocouple Pins results in the creation of twothermocouple junctions, the measurement error introduced is negligible provided the vacuum side of the feedthroughcontacts and their air side are at the same temperature. If required, the Sub-D feedthrough can be used for a mixture of Thermocouple and normal connections by appropriatechoice of the Socket Pins. If very accurate temperature measurement is required, the use of a Platinum ResistanceThermometer is recommended.This page also details Crimp Tools and Accessories. Demounting Tool 214-CRIMPINS

The Pins click into place in the HVSockets. If it is required to removethem, the Demounting Tool shouldbe used.

This Tool can also be used to easilyinsert the Pins into the HV Sockets.

The Sub-D Feedthroughs have malePlug type connections both insideand outside. The Adaptor convertsthe air side Plug into a (female)Socket (see Illustration far right).

The SHV-20 High Voltage Feedthrough offers a safe air side connection for high voltage signals.

Two distinct types are offered. The standard type has the high voltage insulator within the body of thefeedthrough while the extended type has the ceramic exposed on the vacuum side.

For sensitive signals the Triaxial-Feedthrough can be used. The Triaxial feedthrough is doubly shielded. The inner shield is isolated from both the conductor and the system ground. The outer shield is connectedto system ground.

A wide variety of Power Feedthroughs are available with Voltage Ratings from 500V to 100.000V for currents from mA to 1.000A. On the following pages the types are sorted by Voltage rating . Special High Current types (>30A) are on page 15 For High Voltage types see Page 16.

The 500V versions are very small. As standard for these 500V miniature types , we offer MolybdenumConductors These have a current rating up to 10 A. 1KV types have as standard Copper Conductors. Stainless Steel and Nickel Conductors are available on request for all types.

The MS Circular Connector provides a method of safe and secureconnection for several thermocouple pairs in one feedthrough.The MS series can accommodate up to 10 pairs on one flange.

Double Sided versions are available. They have air and vacuum sidesocket connectors. The vacuum side one is fully bakeable.

• Thermocouple Type K with Kapton and Teflon Isolation• Suitable for use to 260°C and. 220°C respectively.These temperatures must not be exceeded. When the Thermocouple is being used tomeasure higher temperatures, bare thermocouple wire should be used in the vacuum.

The new type N thermocouple is now available with Kapton Isolation. This type isrecommended for general use. It has a wider temperature range and better stability thanthe popular type K The Thermocouple Type C, R and S are relatively expensive because they contain noblemetals.

Standard Viewports are available on CF, KF- and ISO-K-Flanges. They transmit light in the visible spectrum and the Infra-red to 2500nm. For KF and ISO-K High vacuumapplications, Transparent Plastic Flanges offer a low cost alternative.

Viewport Shutters protect the viewport from deposited materials in thin film systems.

To prevent harmful radiation from escaping from the vacuum system through the glassviewport, Allectra offers Lead Glass Protection screens which fit onto the outside of thevacuum viewport. They cannot be alone and are not vacuum tight.

Sapphire transmits light from 180nm to 5500nm.Small Viewports are made from UV Grade Sapphire. Larger ones from Regular Grade. the main advantage of Sapphire over Fused Silica (Quartz) is the higher bakeout temperature of 400°C.

Allectra offers a wide range of Special Materials Viewports including Magnesium Fluoride, Calcium Fluoride, Zinc Selenide, Cleartran and Germanium.

Beryllium-Windows with thickness as fine as 50µm are available for applications whereX-Ray transmission is required. Beryllium windows can be water cooled on request.

Fused Silica is a polycrystalline isotropic material with no crystal orientation. It has bettertransmission and optical properties than standard glass particularly in the UV region.

Impurities in Quartz cause a blue -violet fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet radiation.This effect does not occur with Fused Silica which is preferred to Quartz for opticalapplications.

Three grades of Fused Silica are offered which differ in the transmission and impurity level ofthe materials.

Allectra multimode step index silica-silica fibres have a pure silica core and doped silica cladding. The outer coating is a copper alloy which is UHV compatible and solderable.The UV grade (high OH type) will transmit light from 180 to 1200nm . The IR grade (low OH type)will transmit light from 500- 2600nm. They have very low fluorescence and are recommendedfor spectroscopy.Allectra Optical Fibres are offered as 300, 600 and 900 mm lengths terminating at one end with a special UHV compatible F-SMA coupler while the other end is polished and terminated with a metal ferrule. The standard core diameter is 600 microns. 200 and 400 microns are available to order.

Allectra offers a range of In-Vacuum Stepper Motors both High Vacuum and UHV Types.These motors offer an alternative to mechanical linkages and bellows in vacuum. Allectra In-Vacuum Motors are conventional 2/4 phase stepper motors with 200 ( optionally500) steps per revolution. They may be driven by a wide range of commercially availableControllers and Drivers and are suitable for half step or Micro-step Control systems. Theycan be driven in Uni-Polar or Bi-polar mode.

UHV Motors include a built-in K type thermocouple.

10.4: UHV Lubricant, Solder & Glue

Lubricants are not usually allowed in UHV. However, low vapour pressure lubricants cansometimes offer an acceptable solution.Allectra offers the lubricant MCOTE for High Vacuum and some UHV applicationswhere temperatures do not exceed 150°C If this lubricant is acceptable, then thelifetime of bearings in vacuum can be greatly increased.

UHV Glue is widely used in applications such as UHV AFM and is bakeable to 200°C .UHV Solder is a very useful in some situations. Our Solder is free from Cd, Sn,and Zn. It has a vapour pressure of less than 10 -11 mbar l / s. at 250°C. It comes complete with flux and can be used as normal solder.

High temperature Thread Lubricant should be used on external bolts on baked UHV systems to prevent seizing of the nuts tothe bolts after baking.

11.2: CF Allectra Universal Flanges and Rotatable Flanges

Instead of Tapped Flanges, Rotatable Flanges, and Tapped Rotatable Flanges Allectra offers , in addition to our standard316L flanges, a new and very convenient type , the unique ACF Allectra Universal Flange. The ACF Universal Flange is four Flanges in one. The outer ring of an ACF flange has equi-spaced tapped and clearance holes. This allows the Allectra Universal Flange tobe used as rotatable flange or tapped flange as required. Additionally, the outer ring can be fixed in a particular positionby means of a grub screw allowing the flange to be used as a fixed flange.

Additionally Allectra offers conventional rotatable flanges in 316L. For rotatable tapped flanges, we recommend the useof the ACF type.

11.3: CF Flanges 316LN (1.4429) Series

For applications which require the lowest possible magnetic permeability and the highest temperature performance, thestainless steel grade 316LN ( 1.4429) is recommended by laboratories such as CERN. Unlike many manufacturers Allectra316LN Series flanges are completely made from 316LN, in the case of rotatable flanges – both the inner and the outer parts.

The material used is bar : larger sizes from DN63CF and up are made from forged bar.

Zero Length Adaptors are the easiest and most compact way to connect different flange sizes. The smaller flange profilehas metric tapped threads.Double Sided Flanges are useful for constructing diaphragms or gas inlets. They are offered as blank flanges for boring tothe required size. Standard 6 Way Crosses (Double Crosses) have one fixed and one rotatable flange on eachaxis. The fixed flange is mounted so that the bolt holes straddle the vertical axis. This is thecase for all spheres of size DN63 CF and over. If required, Crosses can be made with in-linebolt holes.

Flexible Bellows Connectors are offered in sizes from 250mm long up to 1000mm long.Special lengths can be made to order. They have flexibility and can be extended inlength. Repeated extension and compression , however, is not recommended. They are used,for example, as pumping lines for fast entry locks.

Flexible Couplings are used as connections in vacuum systems where some extensionand compression are required.

Edge Welded Bellows provide the highest degree of flexibility both inextension/compression and angular movement. They also provide good vibrationisolation. Allectra offers a wide variety of bellows to customer's specification.

From size DN63 to size DN630, the ISO Norm 1609 specifies a series of Large Vacuum Flangeswhich are sealed with elastomer seals. These are called ISO-K Flanges or sometimes LF (LargeFlanges). They are suitable for elevated temperatures up to 200°C for brief periods and 150°C forcontinuous operation. ISO-K flanges are sealed with Double Claw Clamps .Alternatively compatible bolt flanges are available. The bolt flanges are called ISO-F and can beused together with ISO-K by means of Single Claw Clamps ( see Photo right).

ISO-K and ISO-F

ISO-K Flanges (LF Clamp Flanges) are very compact. The Outer Diameter is not much greater than the tube size. They are joined togetherwith clamps which can be arranged around the flange as desired.

ISO-F Flanges (LF Bolt Flanges) are much larger and have through holes for bolts. They require more space but are more stable. They areoften used for heavy components such as gate valves.ISO-F Flanges can be made from ISO-K types by the addition of a Rotatable Bolt Ring.

Both systems can be combined without problems using Single Claw Clamps or Rotatable Bolt Rings.

The ISO Flange System complies with ISO 1986 and DIN 28404.

– Chamber is stress relieved . it will not change

shape after baking.

used in the cleaning process.

Electro-polishingAllectra also offers electro-polishing as an optionif preferred.

Mu-MetalFor ultimate protection from Magnetic Fields , Allectra offers UHV chambers constructed from 3mmor 5mm Mu-Metal. The fabrication method is to the highest industry standard . Each metal joint isboth welded and brazed for maximum security. Mu-metal chambers are annealed by a specialprocess after manufacture to restore the properties of the Mu-Metal which otherwise would bedegraded by working.

Preparation of engineering drawings, fabrication from high quality 316L stainless steel , TIG weldingand cleaning are standard. All fabrications are leak checked to UHV standard. UHV chambers are annealed in a vacuumfurnace for stress relief.

15.2: Atlas Aluminium Bi-Metal, Al UHV

Aluminium Flanges and UHV Chambers

The development of the Atlas Flange has opened up the possibility ofusing Aluminium for UHV Chambers while maintaining flexible joints withstandard stainless steel components using the familiar CF flange system.The Atlas Bi-Metal flange has a stainless steel knife edge face which isbonded to an Aluminium plate or tube. The bond is made with apatented process developed by Atlas Technologies Inc. which employstwo interlayers of Titanium and Copper respectively. The resulting bond isextremely strong and stable over a wide range of temperatures fromCryogenic to 4000C.

Aluminium is a very good UHV material with excellent out-gassing properties. It is finding increasing use in Synchrotrons and Semi-conductormanufacturing plants amongst others. The Atlas Flange allows Aluminiumchambers to be connected directly with conventional copper gaskets tostainless steel components such as pumps , gauges or valves. Atlas Bi-Metal flanges have now been chosen by the SOLEIL Synchrotron.
