What’s changed
Areas that have changed:
Preferred sources of information
How franchise titles are recorded
Recording 34X and 380 fields
What’s changed (sort of):
Preferred sources of
information
Preferred sources of information Ideally (still the preferred source, per RDA):
Title screen(s) or title frame(s)
Realistically (per OLAC best practice, if there’s not time or equipment to view title screens or frames):
Disc label
Container or accompanying material
Internal source, i.e., disc menu
Include a source of title note (MARC tag 500)
What’s changed:
Recording franchise
titles
What’s a franchise?
From Wikipedia:
A collection of related films in succession that
share the same fictional universe, or are marketed
as a series.
Some franchise examples
Recording franchise titles
OLAC best practice recommendation:
Record the franchise title and the number and/or specific
title as part of the title proper (245 subfield a), adding a
colon after the franchise title for clarity. Do not put a space
in front of the colon.
Only record a title as other title information (245 subfield b)
if it is clearly secondary to the title information and is not
necessary to distinguish the title from other titles in the
franchise.
Recording franchise titles--Examples

Recording 34X fields—general guidelines
Record each term in a separate 34X field (per OCLC)
Controlled vocabulary terms now come from lists on the RDA Registry website, rather than the RDA Toolkit
Links to lists can be found in the Bibliographic Formats and Standards entry for the field and subfield
Enter the code for the list in ǂ2
Not every term is included on an RDA Registry list
If using a term not on a controlled list, omit ǂ2
Recording 34X fields—copy cataloging
When copy cataloging, add fields as needed
If multiple terms are present in one field, split into separate fields with appropriate code in ǂ2 if applicable
Before:
344 _ _ ǂadigitalǂbopticalǂgsurroundǂhDolby Digital 2.0ǂ2rda
After:
344 _ _ ǂadigitalǂ2rdatr
344 _ _ ǂbopticalǂ2rdarm

Not required if your item is a commercially produced disc
When editing in OCLC, may be retained if already present (controlled vocabulary term is stamping)

Some general reminders for video cataloging
If video has closed captions or English SDH:
Include MARC tag 041, subfield j for the subtitles
041 0_ ǂaengǂjengǂheng
Include this genre heading:
655 _7 ǂaVideo recordings for the hearing impaired.ǂ2lcgft

Some general reminders for video cataloging—SHARE local practice
Add General Material Designation (gmd)
245 ǂh [videorecording]
Comes after ǂa, ǂn, ǂp; before ǂb
Add edition statement for format
Add MARC tag 250, or add to existing 250, separated by
a comma
Include this local subject heading for Playaway Views:
690 _ _ ǂa Playaway View (Preloaded video player)
Record relationship designators in ǂe
Change ǂ4 (relator code) to ǂe (relator term)
Remember …
RDA is constantly changing
Just because you see something in an OCLC
record doesn’t mean it’s correct
Everyone else is as confused about RDA as you
are!
Do your best, but don’t agonize!
