    On behalf of the entire team, I want to thank our loyal buyers and consignors for making the fi rst half of 2014 exciting and memorable for Hart Davis Hart. We maintained our long-standing market lead among US auction houses, bringing exceptional collections to the market for our bidders while sustaining strong and consistent results for our consignors. The opportunity to represent such noteworthy cellars as The Harris Collection ($7.5M realized, est. $4-6M) in February and those offered in A Celebration of Burgundy ($4.1M realized, est. $2.6-3.9M) in May has been an honor for us, and is part of why we are in this great business.

    We conclude the fi rst half of the year with an auction that is packed with quality and diversity and represents many of the fi nest collections available. The sale, which begins on Friday, June 27th, will open with a further installment from The Fox Cellar (lots 1-178). Adding to the well over $20M that HDH has already sold from this leading cellar, this sale’s offering reads like a library of top Bordeaux, with a distinct focus on First Growth gems. The Thomas E. Bentley Cellar follows (lots 179-286), maintaining this focus on highest quality First Growth Bordeaux from top vintages. Thomas Bentley was an avid collector of top wines, and purchased and stored them with the utmost care.

    The Nelson-Lo Collection (lots 1496-2169) opens our Saturday, June 28th session with a choice selection of wines from the best regions in the world, anchored by a leading Bordeaux library and followed by a comprehensive range of Burgundy. Stephen Nelson and Vincci Lo are longtime friends and knowledgeable collectors whose diverse palettes are refl ected in this offering, which represents a partial thinning of this well-known cellar. They have purchased carefully in the UK and stored the wines in commercial facilities, always resting in the UK. Continuing our Saturday session, bidders will immediately note the care and dedication involved in building The Bonelli Collection, one of the world’s great German cellars (lots 2588-2646). Dr. Landy Bonelli focused on the fi nest producers and top vintages in creating his collection, and maintained a perfect cellar for these rare and mature German wines.

    In total, this sale features nearly 3000 lots of the fi nest collections HDH has offered. In addition to The Fox Cellar, The Thomas E. Bentley Collection, The Nelson-Lo Collection and The Bonelli Collection, you will fi nd an array of top wines with excellent provenance. Italian collectors will certainly want to note the East Coast Cellar offered in lots 287-440. The selection of Giacosa and Conterno offerings, among other top producers, is phenomenal. We are offering more repeat consignors in this auction than ever before, including a great friend of HDH who brings us an exceptional span of Bordeaux and California wines (lots 2170-2270), with a continued focus on quality and provenance.

    HDH is honored to offer the wines of the late Thomas E. Bentley, an avid Bordeaux collector and a major donor to the US Naval Academy. After attending the Naval Academy and serving as Class President in 1954, Mr. Bentley went on to start his own business, which he steadily developed into a multi-million dollar leader in the metal industry. Mr. Bentley began collecting French wines in the 1980s, carefully sourcing wines from established merchants (primarily Mills Fine Wine and Spirits of Annapolis.) Over the years, he amassed a lovely cellar of some of the fi nest Bordeaux wines available. All wines have been kept in temperature-controlled storage since purchase, and buyers may bid with great confi dence.

    The Conterno men have adhered to the same winemaking credo for three generations: use only premium quality grapes to produce the purest expressions of Barolo, without compromise. Utter traditionalists, the family consistently favors extremely low yields, lengthy maceration, and prolonged aging in oak barrels (up to four years.)
