PREFACEI am please to present the experimental report on Terracotta jewellery for self employment. This experimental work has been conducted in my guidance by Miss Ujwala Gujar during her association with the Rural Craft & Engineering Section of Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrialization, Wardha.To conduct experiment on Terracotta jewellery for self employment, she continuously visited to guide the Jai Durga Self-Help Group Waigoan. To study the markets feed-back of newly designed terracotta jewellery she visited India International Trade Faire 2008 from 14th to 28th Nov 2008 and recorded excellent market response. The jewellery produced by SHG were shown excellent market response during different exhibitions at Nagpur, Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi Haat and Jaipur. Many groups and indusial are coming forward to accept production and marketing of terracotta jewellery as a business.In this experiment Ms Leena Bansod, Project Director, DRDA, Wardha had sown keen interest on design and marketing of jewellery.We encourage more groups as well as indusial to take up this occupation for their income generation and cultural development of India.Best Wishes

TERRACOTTA JEWELLERY FOR SELF-EMPLOYMENT 1 Status of terracotta/pottery product in Wardha- Around Wardha good quality of pottery clay is not available. The potters of Wardha region are not making pottery products and during summer they brings the pots for trading from Bhandara around 200 Kms from Wardha district. Wardha potters are involve in making of Idols for God Ganesh, Goddess Laxmi and Durga. Females of potter families are making few pieces of RANGEN during summer session with available clay. Now business for trading of pots and making of idols is declining day by day. Most of potter-families are below poverty line and landless. For the revival of these artisan it is necessary to introduce such clay products which requires less clay and give-back maximum return. Objectives- The main objectives are- to develop design skill among the potters.to develop product design based on markets feed-backto develop stainable business for self help groupsto make traditional pottery industry more competitive with more market-driven, productive, profitable and sustained employment for traditional pottery industry artisans.to build up innovated and traditional skills, improved technologies, advanced processes, market intelligence and new models of public-private partnerships, so as to gradually replicate similar models of cluster-based regenerated traditional industries.

Necessary action The group of agencies DRDA Wardha & MGIRI decided to work jointly and prepare active module. Active module means a successful business based on local & cultural heritage which can be organized in following manner-Knowledge of new trends of design through market Capacity to prepare new designs based on local & cultural heritage (Ancient references say that Indian designs were very much eminent in the world without support of any trained designer)Product should be designed according to local, regional, national & international needsSupport of Designers must be made available, locally Availability of quality raw materials, locally Detail knowledge of complete & latest technologies, tools and equipmentsMarketing education through active artisanal industry.

Design Education- When the income of artisan community increases, they will take automatically interest in design education process. MGIRI Wardha had conducted several trials with active coordination of DRDA Wardha, regarding design, training during production and recorded significant results. For continuous design support to clusters/SHGs it is necessary to develop the design skill of local man-power in following steps- Nurturing of technically qualified local professionals & artisans. For specific problems subject mater specialist must be consulted to get proper solutions. Continuous guidance to SHGs for products development based on cultural heritage & present market trend From every group, some innovators must be located in order to nurture as a design craftsman. The trained design craftsperson must be identified as a master trainer.

Nurturing of technically qualified locally professionals & artisans- The following locally available professional & artisans were selected for the experimentArt teacher diploma/BFA- Different product design & development workshops were organized for terracotta artisans, students of art teacher diploma, BFA, MFA, teachers of different fine arts colleges and local & regional painting artist. Finally it was observed that product design with active involvement of artisan and trained artist will achieve new dimension in the field of craft. Involvement of local artist: - Around 23 artist of Wardha were involved for painting on the pots. For market study at IITF 2007 they created all types of painting on pots like miniature, mugal, folk, contemporary, etc. After fair it was observed that small and handy items were in a big demand. The middle class mass is more interested on utility items rather than decorative items. Decorative items at the price range of Rs100-500/- are more viable or say easy moving item.

2. Training and designing during production at artisans colony- Rural Craft and Engg section of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Industrialization, Wardha and Ms Leena Bansod Director DRDA, Wardha jointly started a new experiment on April 2008.It was mutually decided that MGIRI will provide training support on latest design trend of market, quality control in terms of finishing and grooming to selected members of SHG as a field trainer. DRDAs responsibility was to arrange loan for production, co-ordination among SHG members and marketing. They located one female self help group at Waigaon, about 15 kilometers from Wardha. Originally the potters of this village were making only seasonal items like statues of god and goddess. The ladies belonging to these families are either helping their male counterparts for preparing clay or working as a labourer at the nearby agricultural fields. They earned just Rs.50/- per day per person as wages from agricultural fields. Among the 23 artist of Wardha district Director DRDA Wardha called five for skill test at DRDA. Ms Ujwala Gujar completed art teacher diploma and studying in 4th year of BFA has been working since February 2007 with MGIRI was selected for design and training work at Waigaon. She is a best among twenty three artists of Wardha. She was already groomed for terracotta product design and development. With the help of Ms Ujwala Gujar the training and designing during production for terracotta fashion jewellery, murals and mask for ladies of Jai Durga Self Help Group has been organized at artisans colony Waighon. SBI Waighon had sanctioned Rs1,50,000/- as a loan under Prime Minister Employment Programme.

3. Terracotta product- Due to non-availability of pottery clay in Wardha region it was mutually decided by DRDA & MGIRI to introduce terracotta product which requires minimum pottery clay and pay-back maximum return in terms of profit. Pottery clay requirement for terracotta jewellery is in very minor quantity and after proper finishing it. will be sold in good price.

Terracotta fashion jewellery - Terracotta jewellery is very fashionable and elegant. Terracotta fashion jewellery is carved in an extraordinary manner that gives a regal feel anda touch of elegance. Terracotta jewellery now has an emerging market, which is well received in both India and International market. Forming great accessories, terracotta jewellery are with unique designs that go well with all forms of dress and can be worn on all occasions. Terracotta jewellery can add a lot of class. A fantastic piece of ethnic terracotta jewellery should be worn by people with taste. It is a rage among fashion conscious people. They are handmade and its variety is at par with the expensive items in terms of beauty of design and the variety offered. The varied cultures and moods of Indian heritage have given rise to many challenging crafts which are reflected in terracotta fashion jewellery. They are available in beautiful colour combinations. Today the terracotta fashion jewellery makes exotic dressing style when worn with the traditional nomadic or tribal dresses. In the rural and tribal societies the earthen ornaments like necklaces, bracelets, pendants, and chokers were quite commonly used. They create elegant and rustic appeal. They can take up various earthen colours of pink, red, rust or gray. The traditional shapes can be animals or the tribal gods or a more contemporary look can be given by using abstract shapes.

4. Study of present marketing trend through artisans- They are working at their own places. For sale of their finished products they visited different fairs of Delhi haat, Pune, Wardha, Bangalor, Jaipur and Nagpur. During sale of their product at different exhibitions they interacted with customers and recorded their choice and taste. They are using these inputs during design of new product. After three months the earnings of each ladies has been increased upto Rs100/- per day. Thirty thousand rupees was deposited in the bank for loan re-payment. Design-craft-person - Two ladies of that group are started composing the different shades of colours and preparing new designs of pendants. They are getting employment round the year now, because these products are always in demand. They also have a share in the profit. Within one year more than fifty designs of terracotta jewellery, ten designs of murals, mask & a variety of finished products have come in the market. Now each member of SHG has their own group for production. Other SHGs and youths are approaching for training of terracotta products

5. Launch of Wardhani- Honorable Shri Vijay Mohite Patil, Rural Development and Tourism Minister introduced more than two dozen products produced by self-help groups on Thursday 25th Dec 2008 at the Datta Meghe hall in Sawangi. The products with the brand name Wardhini include terracotta jewellery, Khadi & jute fashion bags and 18 edible products including soya flour, decorative candles, etc. The terracotta products and khadi & jute fashion bags have been produced by self-help group of Wardha with actively supported by the MGIRI and District Rural Development Agency Wardha (DRDA). During this function Mr S P Mishra Senior Scientific Officer and Ms Ujwala Gujar Design Consultant have been honored with Wardhini memento and flower bouquet by Honorable Minister Vijay Mohit Patil. Wardhini symbolizes prosperity and growth and is another name of Goddess Laxmi, said Ms Leena Bansod, Director DRDA, Wardha. Zilla Parishad CEO and DRDA President, Ms Gunjan Kinnu unveiled the products with the help of a power point presentation.
