Photo by Greenwood Resort Photo by Pigeon Cay N o one knows exactly where the term rake n scrape came from or on which island the music originated - some say Cat Island or Abaco. But the one thing we know for sure is that it was passed down from African slaves mimicking the sounds of their homeland using a washboard, scraping sticks and carpenter’s saw, as well as more conventional instruments like the goombay drum and concertina. In the early days it was known simply as African music, and over time was used to accompany such dances as the Bahamian Quadrille and the Hell and Toe Polka dances. These days musicians such as Chippie & The Boys and Ed Moxey and the famous Lassie Doh and the Boys keep the music alive, along with countless rake n scrape bands throughout the Family Islands, where it is still popular to this day. No one knows exactly where the term rake n scrape came from or on which island the music originated - some say Cat Island or Abaco. But the one thing we know for sure is that it

was passed down from African slaves mimicking the sounds of their homeland using a washboard, scraping sticks and carpenter’s saw, as well as more conventional instruments like the goombay drum and concertina.
