The Castrol-backed V8 Supercar teams have struck gold with four stars with Formula 1 experience signing on for the Armor All Gold Coast 600, October 21-23 on the streets of Surfers Paradise.

Tony d’Alberto’s Wilson Security Racing secured the biggest coup of the crop when it will welcome current HRT F1 pilot, Vitantonio Liuzzi. Currently staving off attacks from Daniel Ricciardo, Liuzzi is the first and only current F1 racer to be confirmed for the event.

Ford Performance Racing welcomes former Ferrari podium man Mika Salo to partner Will Davison and Mark Webber’s

former team-mate, Christian Klien in Paul Dumbrell’s Bottle-O Falcon. They will join the already confirmed Will Power who will sit alongside Mark Winterbottom.

In what promises to be an explosive combination, Russell Ingall will welcome former Stewart Grand Prix racer, Jan Magnussen to the Supercheap Autos Commodore.

The other Castrol-backed cars will line up with the following racers: Todd Kelly – Jorg Bergmeister (Le Mans), Rick Kelly – Richard Westbrook (Le Mans), Greg Murphy –Oliver Gavin (Le Mans), Steve Owen – Boris Said (NASCAR).

TOdAy GETS THE KArTING EdGE

The Nine Network’s Today Show weatherman, Steve Jacobs got

a taste of the CIK Stars of Karting Series, presented by Castrol

EDGE in Newcastle last week.

Live on national television, Jacobs piloted one of the precision

machines ahead of the fourth round of the Series at the Newcastle

kartway before interviewing several of the stars of the Castrol

EDGE-backed Series.

A huge crowd turned out to Newcastle for the event, which was

backed up by strong local media coverage, featuring the Castrol

EDGE brand.

On the track – Queenslander Tyler Greenbury rocketed into

contention in the Pro Gearbox class by taking his maiden win in

the category.

Jake Spencer took his first win in the Pro Light category and take

the Series lead overall from defending Champion, Cian Fothergill.

Fothergill had dominated the meeting winning everything up until

and including Final one– however a mechanical problem at the

beginning of Final two dropped him to the rear of the field.

He and Spencer carved their way through to be second and third

at the drop of the chequer, however a timing issue for Damien

Radosevic saw him rubbed out of the official results, handing the

race win to Spencer. Fothergill won the round.

In the Pro Junior ranks, Jake Klarich took his second round

win of the season. This has placed him third in the series

behind defending Champion – Pierce Lehane – who had an

uncharacteristically off weekend at Newcastle and Saturday’s

pace-setter, Joseph Mawson.

The Series culminates at Eastern Creek over the weekend of

September 17-18.

Castrol EDGE will continue it’s long standing technical partnership with MINI in its new venture – the World Rally Championship – it was confirmed ahead of the Rally of Finland.

Famous MINI pilot Rauno Aaltonen, who with Bob Holden lead the MINI rout of Bathurst in 1966 when they filled the first nine places – was on hand to be with the WRC team in Finland.

He was better known for his rally exploits with the marque than Bathurst, winning the European Rally Championship, then becoming the third MINI driver to win the Monte Carlo Rally in 1967.

“I have the honour to be here for both the road going MINI for the normal people and, as you know the rally people are not quite normal, so for them we have this MINI John Cooper Works WRC car, which I think is fantastic!” Aaltonen said in Finland.

There were no celebrations for the MINI WRC team of Kris Meeke and Dani Sordo however, with both cars being retired late into the rally. Meeke suffered with a puncture, then sand got into the mechanics of the car. Ironically, Sordo had a similar problem with sand blocking the air intake.

The other Castrol EDGE-backed team, Ford WRC had a happier time, with Jari-Matti Latvala bringing his Focus WRC home in second placing. Mikko Hirvonen finished the event in fourth, however won the final Power Stage on day three of the rally.

Hirvonen remains second in the chase for the Championship – 27 points behind Sebastian Loeb, whilst Latvala sits fourth. The factory Ford WRC team is second in Manufacturer’s Standings, 65 points behind Citroen.

SILVEr LINING IN GbThere was nothing to celebrate at Silverstone for the Castrol Honda World Superbike team – with just one race finish to be recorded between the two riders.

Making a late change to the line-up in the week of the event didn’t assist – with substitute rider, Australian, Karl Muggeridge suffering a mountain biking injury whilst on a holiday.

The second substitute for Ruben Xaus, Fabrizio Lai was brought in at the last moment.

Alex Lowes had a mega crash in the opening race, which rendered his bike useless for the second race. Switching to the spare machine, it wasn’t set up for him to be competitive and he retired from the event.

Lai on the other hand looked set for a points finish in the opening race, but the front end washed out on him in the latter part of the race. In the second race, he battled to a 16th placed finish.

The World Superbike Championship is now on a break until it returns at the Nurburgring across the weekend of September 2-4.

MX TEAM PIPPEd AT THE POSTThe Castrol-backed Kawasaki MX Nationals team has left the final round of the Rockstar Energy Drinks MX Nationals feeling gutted after a difficult round that included injuries to its Pro Open star, Dean Ferris.

Ferris – who led the Championship up until the round before last – was taken to hospital with injuries after a collision with Josh Coppins. It all but shattered any chance he had of taking the Series win, ultimately going to Yamaha’s Jay Marmont – who won three of the four motos and finished second in the other.

Scotsman, Billy Mackenzie leapt team-mate Ferris for third in the Championship and finished the Coolum round second overall.

The Monster Energy Drink, Castrol Kawasaki team took a further podium in the Pro Lites division with its other international star, Phil Nicoletti. Nicoletti finished fourth for the round at Coolum and was happy after a injury-plagued season to wind up on the podium.

Elsewhere on two wheels, Castrol’s Speedway Grand Prix star, Chris Holder had a horror night in difficult conditions in Italy, finishing the event on an uncharacteristic six points. He does maintain his position toward the top of the standings – though – with others having horror runs as well, including defending Champion, Tomasz Gollob. Greg Hancock continues to lead the Championship.

Road accidents – as in Australia – are one of the biggest killers of teenagers in the United States, with 5000 teens annually dying as a result of a road accident.

Established in 2003, DSFL was established by Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association and a panel of safety experts to teach newly licensed teens the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what they learn in

standard driver education programs.

DSFL helps young drivers improve their skills in four key areas: 1) Hazard Recognition; 2) Vehicle Handling; 3) Speed Management; and 4) Space Management. The program is a perfect fit for Courtney, who has logged plenty of hours behind the wheel of her Ford Mustang and Ford Mustang Funny Car, both of which require skill and experience in those four areas.

Force’s father, John Force made the Semi-Finals of the Sonoma NHRA event held at the weekend. He set a new all time number one qualifier mark, taking the 139th P1 of his career. Unusually for Season 2011, it wasn’t a Castrol GTX-backed JFR machine that was in victory lane. Mike Neff is however the only driver that can be guaranteed a spot in the 2011 Countdown – the top 10 race off.

Courtney Force – the 23 year old daughter of Castrol’s NHRA driver, John has been named the face of Ford Motor Company’s Driving Skills for Life program in the United States.


Current leader of the Castrol EDGE-backed Australian Formula Ford Championship, Cameron Waters is one of the youngest contestants on the Shannon’s Supercar Showdown.

Hailing from Mildura – the home town of Todd and Rick Kelly, Cameron is vying to become the one chosen to partner Grant Denyer in a Castrol-supported Kelly Racing Commodore at Mount Panorama.

After a distinguished career in karting, Waters recently made the step into Formula Ford. He is competing with Sonic Motor Racing Services.

Whilst he is still at high school in Mildura, he is balancing his studies with racing and being part of this exciting new reality TV initiative.

The Shannon’s Supercar Showdown airs each Sunday at 5:00pm on 7mate. The first driver eliminated from the competition was one of the two international hopefuls, with Kiwi, Nick Cassidy being shown the door as the first eliminator.
