Cyber-crime is concentrated in areas of high traffic which makes tourist destinations ideal places for cyber- criminals to attack, says Skycure. Times Square topped the list of most dangerous spots, according to the 2015 Best & Worst Tour- ist Attractions for Mobile Secu- rity. NZ’s Subtle Moves Yesterday we gave Air New Zealand flak for its seemingly harder-line ap- proach with its trade partners. The story has generated an avalanche of feedback from across the trade—in- cluding from some individual agents who say the carrier is talking up the importance of the trade and partner- ships, but not really delivering. However, a more pragmatic industry source has pointed out while we are highlighting NZ’s move to a more commercial outlook, we are missing some subtle changes. For example, we are told that the car- rier’s national advertising campaign (offering consumers booking NZ’s Americas flights the chance to win $20,000) actually features a call to action to travel agents—for the first time in several years. NZ is also said have been allocating more resources, in terms of funding and marketing, to the trade distribution—something which seems set to continue.

THE Anaheim

INSIDER

PO Box 25-482, St Heliers, Auckland 1740

Well we had a big month last month as I mentioned in the last column, with our wonderful turn out of Visit Anaheim partners joining us for the largest NZ sales mission for many years.

We filmed a short presentation from each of the partners who came down to NZ, and this will be loaded onto our updated website in the next month, which will mean everyone will have access to the sales messages, even if you weren’t able to attend the event in Auckland. Watch this space for more information soon.

So next month is always a “spooky month” with Halloween coming up fast!

Knotts Berry Farm says they are the home to the largest and scariest Halloween event in Southern California, so if you have any clients travelling up that way they will be open for business from 24 September. I hear it is truly terrifying.

However if you have any smaller chil-dren there is a daytime event starting 3 October at Knotts which they say is more about cheer than fear.

SeaWorld California also celebrates with a Spooktacular show. They say “here kids can show up in costume and enjoy not to spooky entertainment, such as a Halloween- themed sea lion and otter show, colourful costumed characters, and trick or treating among a sea-inspired atmosphere on weekends through to 1 November”.

They also tell us they have a new sketch based comedy called Sea Lions Live and a Pets Rule show where clever canines, curious cats and unpredictable pigs take charge and show humans whose boss!www.SeaWorldSanDiego.com

Halloween in the USA is always great fun; plenty of costumes, treats etc which if families are there for the next school holidays they can easily bring back for the celebrations here.

More next month,

Pip

Contiki is always looking to develop more product but ‘in Europe it’s hard coming up with things that top what we’re already doing’, says visiting global chief executive Casper Urhammer. The company has launched new tours including three that focus on the Bal-kans, a destination that Urhammer says is rapidly gaining in popularity thanks in part to Game of Thrones. It’s also expected to be particularly popular with young Kiwi travellers. Tours include the 15-day Best of Bal-kans (from $3325pp), 12-day Balkans Discovery (from $2655pp), and four-day Mini Balkan (from $899).There’s also a new itinerary to Iceland, which is focused around the Northern Lights (priced from $1295pp). In ad-dition, there’s also new Mediterranean itineraries; and a five-day London package (priced from $1525). This ca-ters to the increasing number of New Zealanders who are opting to finish their trip in Europe rather than Lon-don, giving them a chance to experi-ence the city before their Europe tour, says the 18-35 tours specialist. Contiki has released an earlybird offer of 10% off its Europe trips which are booked and paid in full by 17 Dec.

New For Europe. . . Free Wi-Fi?While some of Contiki’s competitors have promised free Wi-Fi on their coaches for the coming Europe sea-son, Urhammer says it’s something they’re assessing but it’s not feasible with current infrastructure. The real-ity of 50 people trying to use one coach’s Wi-Fi is that they’re not going to have a good experience, he says. Contiki has negotiated free Wi-Fi for guests at most of the properties it stays at, and says many travellers buy a cheap sim card to access free data during their trip anyway. The coaches offer Wi-Fi at a nominal charge but very few people use it, he adds.

It will offer a range of room types, breakfast, free Wi-Fi, pool, spa baths, bike storage and a meeting room. Re-furbishment works will begin imme-diately with the aim of having a range of rooms ready for the Nov opening.
