When Louis XIV attended a feast held by Nicolas Fouquet at Vaux-le-Vicomte in 1661, the French king discovered a sumptuous castle that was the height of elegance and refinement. Furious at this display of luxury, he left the feast before it was over, had Fouquet arrested, and ordered a palace worthy of his own grandeur to be erected without delay. Versailles, which was then a modest hunting lodge, was gradually trans-formed into a gigantic palace. The first stage of construction saw archi-tect Le Vau triple the surface area of the existing premises: the menagerie and orangery were created, the dig-ging of the canal commenced, and Le Nôtre set to laying out the gardens and park. The second stage of work saw Le Vau build three new sections on the palace’s north side; the service quarters were linked to the castle by a series of lodges; the gardens were given ponds, sculptures, and foun-tains. Louis XIV’s decision to move definitively to Versailles in 1677 ushe-red in a fresh stage of construction, directed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart: Le Vau’s castle was framed by two massive wings and the famous Hall of Mirrors was completed. Versailles was the pinnacle of classical aesthe-tics, the triumph of the Sun King, and without a doubt the largest architectu-ral project of the 17th century.

Perched on the side of a hill on the left bank of the Dordogne, Castelnaud, which was built in the twelfth century, was the scene of incessant battles during the Middle Ages. A major cen-ter of the Cathar faith, it was attacked by Simon de Montfort in 1214, before being burned down by the archbis-hop of Bordeaux. During the Hundred Years War, its owners, the lords of Caumont, who were vassals of the kings of England, were in permanent conflict with their neighbors, the lords of Beynac, who were loyal to the king of France. Taken by the enemy, recap-tured, besieged again, Castelnaud changed hands seven times in just over a century. But little by little, the castle was transformed into an impregnable fortress, first with two new towers and a drawbridge in the fifteenth century, then with an artil-lery tower in 1520. During the Wars of Religion, the Caumonts, who sup-ported the Reformed church, put the defense of the castle in the hands of Captain Geoffroy de Vivans, a fierce warrior who was feared throughout the land. The message must have been very clear, for nobody attac-ked the fortress during that period. Castelnaud was abandoned shortly afterwards because of the lack of com-fort it offered.
