volunteers backstage, from scenic painters to the propsmaster and the costumers and their helpers. “Te pre-cision involved makes a production like this look superprofessional. But most importantly it’s all about participa-tion and it sure wouldn’t happen without ALL the stellar

volunteers.” says Fischer.Te Pantomime is a Nelson tradition and there’s no bet-

ter way to kick start the holiday season than to come outto the Panto with your family and boo, cheer and laughalong with your fellow Nelsonites onstage. Te CapitolTeatre is thrilled to announce that the Kootenay Co-opis again the show sponsor. Te Kootenay Co-op is animportant community asset and takes heaps of pleasureand pride in their role as investors in the well-being of ourcommunity as a way to share their success with everyone.

of local theatre featuring community members of allages in ridiculous, hilarious and even heroic roles! Tisyear’s panto features: Lisel Forst as Puss, Iain Pardoe asDame, Bee Harris as King, Heather Gingras as Felinas and46 more community members!! It’s fun, it’s communitysupport for your theatre, it’s a Capitol Teatre fundraiserand it’s the start of the season! ickets are $15 for adults,$10 for students, or $45 for a family of four. Buy tickets atcapitoltheatre.bc.ca or phone 250-352-6363 uesday thruFriday noon - 4:30 pm.

Charles Perrault’s tale has been adapted to various media

over the centuries. Ludwig ieck published a dramaticsatire based on the tale, called Der gestiefelte Kater, and,in 1812, the Brothers Grimm inserted a version of thetale into their Kinder- und Hausmärchen. In ballet, Pussappears in the third act of chaikovsky’s Te SleepingBeauty in a pas de caractère with Te White Cat. In lmand television, Walt Disney produced an anmimated blackand white silent short based on the tale in 1922. It was alsoadapted many times by writers, television and cinema.

Puss in Boots, is a localized adaptation of the traditionalpantomime about that savvy cat who proves it pays to be

nice to all creatures great and small.Tis comedic script with local ref-erences features several group songand dance numbers and a musicalnumber for each key panto arche-type. In the story there is a millerwhose only inheritance to his threesons was his mill, his donkey andhis cat. Te division was soonmade. Tey hired neither a clerknor an attorney, for they wouldhave eaten up all the poor patri-mony. Te eldest took the mill, thesecond the donkey, and the young-est nothing but the cat....and so thestory unfolds.

Pantomimes are designed fora multi-age audience, so there’ssomething for everyone to enjoy, from physical comedy and one-iners, to all the singing and danc-

ing that are traditionally seen inthis type of show. “Te produc-tion team spends a lot of time atrehearsals just giggling and beingsurprised with little gems thatmake a character just perfect” saysStephanie Fischer, the Capitol Te-atre’s Executive Director.

When a marriage breaks up and you endup battling in court, it can get ugly. Lots oprivate, highly personal details about youramily situation may come out and, howeveruntrue, nasty and embarrassing allegationsofen y both ways.

Recently, a ather involved in a high-conict amily law dispute asked our BCSupreme Court to “seal” its reasons or

judgment to keep the contents rom thepublic.

Te parents had split afer more than 20years o marriage. Tey were ghting overguardianship and parenting arrangementsor their our children (ages 18 to 11 at trial).

Te trial showed that over time, thisamily situation had become seriouslydysunctional, not only as between theparents, but also as between the children

and (mostly) their mother, who had largelybeen responsible or looking afer thembeore the break-up.

Lots o unattering inormation cameout. Te ather, who was highly successulnancially, had long ago pleaded guilty toa serious charge (or which he said he gotan unconditional discharge). He said his exwas badmouthing him about the criminalmatter in their community afer they brokeup, though he’d told her about it beore they

got married. While married, he’d also hadan affair lasting many years.

Te mother alleged sexual misbehaviourby the ather with the children (accusationsthe court categorically rejected). And thetroubled, broken relationship between themother and her older children – involvingscreaming, nasty swear words, disrespect

and physical conrontations – was ullyaired.

Te ather argued all this dirty amilylaundry was highly personal. He saidkeeping the reasons or judgment rom thepublic would be in the best interests o thechildren.

But the BC court said it’s more important

that courts be open. Courts are not privateorums, and this also applies to amily lawcases. It’s not enough that there may beunwanted publicity or that the trial mayresult in embarrassment. A high thresholdo harm has to be proved to qualiy or anexception to the overriding “open court”principle. Te situation here didn’t justiykeeping the reasons or judgment rom thepublic.

Te court took some steps to protect the

children’s anonymity in its published rea-sons by identiying the children only as C1to C4 (and also identied the parents’ namesby initials only). But the judge observed thatit’s difficult to insulate children rom the e-ects o a published judgment.

One o the drawbacks o sorting outamily disputes by going to court is thatit’s very hard to keep things condential.Tere are rules o court that limit access tomatrimonial court les, but once you’re in

open court, the hearing is public and youtake your chances.

Tis is just one more reason to considerusing other options like mediation and/or arbitration. Ask your lawyer aboutalternatives to going to court to sort outyour amily law dispute.
