Spring Closure OfNelson-Salmo Great Northern TrailTe RDCK is closing a portion of the Nelson-Salmo Great

Northern rail because of bear sightings near CottonwoodLake. Te closure will be in effect through to June 5.

In consultation with BC Conservation Offi cer Service,regional bear biologists and the Ministry of Forest Landand Natural Resource Operations, the Regional Districtof Central Kootenay is initiating an annual spring trailclosure for a portion of the Nelson-Salmo Great North-ern rail. Te annual closure will include the trail south ofCottonwood Lake parking area to Hall Siding. Signs willbe posted accordingly at the entrance to trail closures.

Collared bear data has shown the area from Cotton-wood Lake to Hall Siding, particularly the areas of Apexand Camp Busk, are heavily used by grizzly bears in thespring. Te bears use this area because of its high valuedforage habitat. In most cases the bears move on to higherelevations by the middle of June. It is felt that an annualclosure will help ensure public safety and benet the localbear population from over exposure.

As black bear and grizzly bear activity is common inthe spring and early summer, bears may be present on thetrail system throughout the year so please remember toalways:

• use caution

• do not attempt to view or approach bears

• do not leave garbage or food on trails
