For the fifth year in a row ‘Castle can reflect positively on a job well done in terms of the delivery of a fantastic “Let’s Play Volleyball Festival.” The number of club members involved in the delivery of this event for around 200 youngsters was fantastic , and backed up by the various fundraising efforts of club members over the weekend it made for a pretty special one for the club!

Social Volleyball... back in September! The new ‘Castle Social Volleyball sessions were a great success during May and June, regularly attracting 20-30 players. Whilst a number of these were club members whowere already active in the sport and just wanted to keep on playing in the normal quiet months before pre-season, the sessions did encourage new players and re-introduced some former players back into the sport. This was made really evident by the ‘Castle representation at the Whitefield Tournament in Bath where there was a “Mama Gios” team, and a number of former/older members on the Men’s “Team Gios” side!

The aim of the social side of the club is to add a further string to the bow of the club and provide opportunities for adults to play volleyball outside of the rigours of the NVL and formal competitive (or traditional) volleyball. It is hoped that not only will former players come back to the club, but new members will join and that all members of the club, whether junior, social or NVL will all come together and support each other and be part of a larger club.

After the success of the summer’s experiment Newcastle (Staffs) Volleyball is pleased to confirm that Social Volleyball sessions will start again on the 14th September:-Madeley High School- 6.30pm-8pm- Wednesdays -Cost: £10 per year or £2 per session

Training Programme 2011-12: FridaysFollowing discussion between the two head coaches Ant Viggars and Will Roberts it has been agreed to make a change to the training programme on Fridays in the 2011-12 season – this new programme will be in place from Friday 9th September 2011. This should help reverse the decline in the number of young boys staying on in Madeley until 6pm on a Friday to train. It is hoped that this change will help players to develop in 3 main ways:1. By having girls and boys train in the hall at the same time will help their learning2. Younger players will be motivated by the prospect of being invited to stay-on to train in the older session3. There will be an even better ‘club feel’ to sessions.

Training will now be:- 3.30pm-4.30pm – under 12 (year 5-7) boys and girls- 4.30pm-6.00pm – under 14 (years 8 and 9) boys and girls- 6.00pm-7.30pm – under 16 (years 10 and 11) boys and girls

Volleyball’s 2012 Test EventA number of NSVC members were able to go to the London 2012 ’Test event’ at Earls Court In July... in roughly four groups. First up, Meg Viggars was part of the GB ladies squad that was playing in a series of international friendlies against both Japan and Holland – so she had a pretty special experience!! Also very closely involved was RodStockwell, who as we know from previous editions of ‘Castle News is part of the 2012team as statistician. Rod is on the photograph below right where all of the event statistics support team are photographed alongside the USA Men’s team! A group of‘Castle loyalists were there for a day watching – mixing the ‘Castle girls and some of the girls from SV Dynamo who played at Whitefield with NSVC, and finally the fourth group was the ‘Castle lads who are at the National Academy in Loughborough who went for a day and thoroughly enjoyed watching the stars and against raising their own levels of aspiration.

The GB Men performed very well, winning two matches against Egypt and Mexico and although this resulted only in a 5th place finish rather than 4th – if they can repeat similar next summer they could well find themselves in the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games!!

See Meg playing for GB on the ‘Castle You Tube Channel!Meg Viggars increased her number of senior Great Britain caps in the recent matches against Switzerland in Crawley and at the London 2012 Test Event at Earl’s Court. Meg is now doing everything she possibly can to secure selection to be part of GB’s first ever women’s indoor volleyball squadin 21012 when she will be just 18. ‘Castle caught Meg in action for Great Britain on Sky Sports recently in the Switzerland matches when she came of the bench to set very impressively and guided her team to close out the match.

The highlights have been edited together and put on the ‘Castle You Tube channel. To find the clip go to You Tube andsearch NSVC1.

Richard James: EnglandCadets High Peaks

‘Castle under14 player Rich James made his first appearance at National Squad training in July by attending the High Peaks Camp at Kettering. With the restructure of Cadets next season into a national group, plus North, Central and South Squads training every month this was a great call-up for Richard as he strives to get into one of those squads of 20 players.

Euro Volley Cup 2011: Italy

As English Champions at under 18 and for the second successive year ‘Castle are off to Italy in September to compete for the European Cup. This year’s event will feature 8 teams and ‘Castle will be looking to build upon their strong performance last year which saw them win 2 of their 6 matches.

The team to travel to Italy will be led by Ant Viggars as head coach in the absence of Will Roberts who cannot get time off work. The only changes from the team that won the national under 18s are that Will Roberts sadly cannot play as this tournament is for players born 1993 and later and he was born in 1992, Michal Hawiar who has disappointingly decided to no longer player volleyball, and Chris Ashton who cannot make it. Their replacements in the squad are Richard Yates who is signing for ‘Castle NVL, Ryan Heath who is also signing for ‘Castle NVL, and Cameron Rhodes.

The full delegation is:Players: Roo Scott (c), James Goodwin, Richard Yates, Ryan Heath, Alex Jenkins, Sam Shenton, Iain McKellar, Stewart Ross, KacperStefanowicz, Cameron Rhodes, James Chadwick, Richard JamesHead Coach: Ant ViggarsAsst. Coach: Martin MierwzaScout/Stats: Rod StockwellManager: Miles Scott

Volleyball England Satellite AcademiesJust at the summer term ended Volleyball England announced that a number of satellite academies to the national Academy in Loughborough are to be launched. ‘Castle worked as fast as we possibly could with both Newcastle College and our long term partners City of Stoke-on-Trent 6th Form College in Fenton to put in expressions of interest. It is the ambition of NSVc to be able to support daily training for talented young players in this manner so this is crucial for the future of the club – fingers crossed!

Sainsbury’s UK School Games 2011: Sheffield1st-4th September sees the Sainsbury’s UK School Games take place in Sheffield. Sandbanks Beach Volleyball Classic

The weekend of the 16th and 17th July saw the Sandbanks Beach Volleyball event take place in Poole. There has been an annual ‘Castle pilgrimage of teams travelling to play in this event for the past few years both in the junior and senior competitions and this year was no different with players in teams entering the under 14, under 16 and under 18 competitions.

In the under 18 boys event the all ‘Castle pair of Roo Scott and James Goodwin fell at the semi-final stage, whilst Sam Shenton with fellow England Junior Ryan Heath went out in the quarter finals. Stew Ross flew the ‘Castle flag through to the semis, playing alongside another England Junior Richard Yates.

Due to a number of withdrawals our only team in the under 16s was Cameron Rhodes and Rich James – who entered division 2, unsure of how they might fair against the more experienced Beach Volleyball players from the coastal clubs. The lads played in some awful conditions (see Cameron’s smiling face above!!) but excelled themselves throughout and won the competition!

On Sunday Rich was back in action in the under 14s, playing with England Cadet and Wessex player Joel Roberts, son of Anthony who was a formidable player in his day. This team won the title meaning that Rich had a fantastic weekend taking gold medals on both days!

had. Libby Bellamy did a valiant job of trying to make sure that each team got a photo which featured all of

clubs. This meant that Whitefield Tournament organisers decided to cancel the prestigious indoor

both men and ladies. The men were hoping to build upon impressive performances in 2009 (losing finalists) and 2010 (semi-finals) and the ladies had linked up with SV Dyamno in Holland and strengthened the side with the aim of challenging for the title with a young Anglo-Dutch team.

Despite this disappointment, Whitefield remained the focus of the summer outdoor tournament season, and

Finally, Team Gios Reloaded played in division 2. Players were a blend of 1st and 2nd
