"e peninsula was originally used by the Narragansett Indians to build an earthwork to signal across the bay. Castle Hill was later named by Colonial sailors, who thought the rocky Rhode Island promontory looked like a majestic stronghold. In the centuries to follow, Narragansett Bay drew settlers of all sorts, from Italians, Portuguese, Greek and Irish immigrants, to America’s wealthiest Gilded Age families. "e wealthy built great architectural tributes to the life of leisure in Newport: splendid, many-roomed mansions they called “cottages”. Castle Hill was one of these, a gracious, shingle-style song of a house commissioned by the naturalist Alexander Agassiz, on a peninsula where the land yearned for the water. Agassiz was a marine zoologist, one of the #rst of his kind, and he kept his eye on the ocean and the life within it, from the place he thought best suited in America for such study. He, like many before him, loved the ethereal air, the scrolling of seabirds overhead, and the deep water, alive with color and movement, ever-changing.
