Casserole Carrier Sewing Pattern
STUDIO CHERIE
Like so many sewists I know, I have been sewing since the age of 6. I started sitting at my mother’s feet fashioning her scraps into doll clothes. By age 16, I was spending Summers sewing my wardrobe for the coming school year. I was known as a creative dresser. I wrote my first sewing pattern in 2006 as part of applying for a patent. When I am writing a pattern, I am thinking about the kindred spirits who will use the pattern to make gifts of their own or start a cottage business.

PATTERN CUTTING: Use a sharp pair of fabric scissors or a rotary cutter to cut your pattern pieces. Then, use pattern weights or straight pins to secure the paper pattern pieces to your fabric. Just make sure to try and cut without lifting the pattern and fabric from your cutting table. (And don’t forget to transfer all of your markings before removing the paper!)

STEP 2Exterior fabric and lining fabric shown below. Both fabrics folded at top and one fabric stacked over the other to cut both fabrics at once. 2 copies of this main piece in each fabric.
STEP 3Contrast fabric for handles, shown below with a fold at the right side. Cut from a 3.5” strip.
Pattern Pieces PrepSTEP 1Tape pattern pages together along dotted lines as shown. I use a window as shown to see through the paper and align the dotted lines. The dotted lines surrounding each page measure 7½” x 10”.
STEP 2Cut out individual pattern pieces. There is one large main piece and 5 smaller pattern pieces.
Cut Out Fabric and FeltSTEP 1Felt shown (below) with fold at the top to cut 2 at once. Note: If you want more insulation, cut 4 of the main pieces in felt.

Quilt Fabric to Felt(If you are using 2 layers of felt, quilt one layer to outer fabric as shown, and also quilt one layer of felt to the lining pieces – not depicted here.)
This sample was made using straight line horizontal quilting spaced at 1.25” per line.
You can also use the felt as a foundation to quilt a pieced design or any type of patchwork desired. I kept it quick and simple for the sample shown here. Always a good idea for your first one too. The photo below shows the felt side after quilting.
Press Contrasting Fabric PiecesSTEP 1As shown, at top of next column, the smallest piece, “zipper ends,” is pressed in half the long way, then the long edges are pressed to the center line. You are
essentially making a binding that will envelop the ends of the zipper.
STEP 2The straps are pressed to encapsulate the felt as shown below.
First ½” fold covers long edge of felt, next fold brings the covered edge toward the middle, the next fold, first image shown below, is pressed as a marker for the last fold, as shown in the second image below, keeping the raw edge on the inside. The 2 folded edges meet at one long edge.

STEP 5Lining is stitched to zipper along the same stitch line as stitched in Step 4 Right side of lining to underside of zipper. Do this for both pieces. Include fabric to fabric stitching just before and after the zipper starts, so the whole top edge of exterior is stitched to the top edge of lining with zipper sandwiched between the 2 fabrics.
STEP 6Press fabrics away from zipper.
Continued on next page.
Finishing ZipperSTEP 1Finish zipper Ends by encasing the ends of the zipper in fabric. Make the finished zipper 24” long. The one “zipper ends” piece will be long enough to finish both ends of the zipper, as shown.
STEP 2Stitch straps closed to long edges and again ¼” away as shown.
STEP 3Stitch zipper in place centered at top edge of exterior fabric and lining.
Zipper, shown at top of next column, face down on right side of quilted fabric. Do this for both exterior pieces. 3/8” seam allowance.

seam allowance. Right sides of lining to lining and right sides of exterior fabric to exterior fabric. Leave a 6” opening in lining bottom for turning. Make sure zipper is open for this step.
Corners are not yet stitched.
STEP 2Stitch Corners. The top corners are stitched first. They are hard to photograph, so the image shows only the larger bottom corners. They are both done the same way.

STEP 7Topstitch next to long edges of zipper. Do not stitch past the zipper.
It is easier to see the stitches from the underside, but you can stitch from either side.
Attaching StrapsStitch straps in place on exterior fabric only. Place the straps as shown an inch from the top edge of the sides. Both raw edges of straps are stitched, forming loops. Do not catch the lining fabric in this stitch.

Completing Casserole CarrierSTEP 1Turn everything right sides out through the opening in the lining. Make sure all the seams look good.
Stitch the opening closed on the machine or by hand.
Zipper will open wide to receive the casserole. There is room to add utensils, hot pads, napkins, etc.
After zipping closed, the long strap threads through the loop of the short strap to close and provide a carrying handle.
I hope you enjoy your new casserole carrier!
STEP 3Cut corners pull apart, seams come together right sides of fabric together. This creates a straight line perpendicular to the side and bottom seams. Pin this closed on both the exterior fabric and the lining fabric. It is the same at the top, only smaller and the zipper is in place of the bottom seam.

STEP 4Lining and exterior fabrics come together along the side seams to stitch the corners closed at the same time. This will keep the lining snug on the inside of the bag.Stitch with a 3/8” seam allowance through all layers.
