I hear it all the time: “We need more jobs in Logan-sport.” ! e most recent encounter I

had with this expression was at the 18th Street Corridor Project unveiling. A very concerned citizen said, “! is is great and all … it looks nice. But why are we wasting our money here? We could be spending it to fi nd jobs!” ! is seems to be a common struggle among residents. Here are my thoughts: We can’t expect to fi nd ALL the opportunities for Logansport. ! is paper is an excellent example. Someone went to college, came home, and decided to start a business. ! e corridor is important because

it improves the quality of this town, as do the new sidewalks, trails, and lights. ! ese high-lights make our community a better place to live and by con-sequence, a better place to work. While it IS important to look for people to invest in Logan-sport, it’s also important tokeep in mind we need to build a place to be invested in. And on that note, seriously examine the growth of Logansport in the last few years, 5th Street BBQ, Puttin’ on the Nails, Jason’s House of Trains, Bubba’s Smoke Shack, the Cass County Communication Network… these are just a few of the local people who have started a local business to better themselves, better you, and better our community.

One of the fi rst shows I remember seeing at McHale Performing Arts Center was a local dance studio’s production of “! e Nutcracker.” An-other one that stands out vividly must have hap-

pened around 1990 — because Logansport High School presents “West Side Story” as its Winter Fantasy production every ten years. Since then, I’ve attended countless productions in McHale and I’ve been on stage myself for dance recitals, awards pro-grams, candidate forums and even a play. Each time, I fi nd myself in the audience, I think back to that fi rst visit, when I was probably three or four years old. At the time, I knew McHale was something special, but as an adult, I appreciate it even more. ! e auditorium itself is impressive, especially for a community our size. But I realize now that it’s the people who make the productions

happen that make McHale what it is. ! is month, “West Side Story” returns to the McHale stage as the 2010 Winter Fantasy production. ! e day after ! anksgiving, the 10th annual Light Up Logansport parade will light up the streets downtown, kicking o" the holiday season. ! e fl oats you’ll see are ones that were created by local businesses and organizations, and the parade partici-pants will be your friends and neighbors. On Saturday, Dec. 4, local businesses will be dressed in holiday style for the 11th annual Downtown Christmas Open House, presented by Logan’s Landing. It’s a great chance to visit locally-owned boutiques and see how you support our community by doing your holiday shopping locally. ! at night, and the following afternoon and evening, the Cass County Arts Alliance and its partner organizations will present a holiday production featuring more than 250 local people. “Hometown Holidays 2 — A

Cool Yule,” written by Logansport resident Lisa Terry, is a sequel to a sold-out show that graced the McHale stage in 2002. ! e performers you’ll see on stage at McHale aren’t the Broadway actors you’ll see in the Macy’s ! anksgiving Day Parade. ! ey’re people just like you who are volun-teering their time to do something great for our community. ! e ticket prices aren’t what you’ll pay for seats at a show in Indianapolis or Chicago, either. You won’t fi nd the same stores in our downtown that you’ll fi nd on the Magnifi cent Mile — you won’t fi nd the crowds or the prices, either. What you will have are memories of holiday fun in the place we all call home. You’ll see members of the Cass County Communication Network at all these great local holiday events. You’ll even see one of us on stage for Hometown Holidays. We keep hearing something about a penguin and a ukulele ... we won’t miss it, and neither should you!
